DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

A REPORT OF DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES From July 2012- September 2012

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Biotechnology admitted 45 students in F.Y. B.Sc. this year. The

academic planning of this year was done in the meeting of the department held on 14th July

2012. Sufficient quantities of books as per syllabus were purchased for the college library.

Departmental Library was updated and students issued books from this library.

The teachers in their respective courses conducted class tests, home assignments

regularly for F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y. classes. Frequent discussion sessions were held in the

department on recent topics in Biotechnology and Research. The students were encouraged to

participate in various academic and extracurricular activities like poster competition, paper

presentation competition, seminar competition etc. All the students were trained to use Internet

and computer for updating their knowledge in the field.

To update student’s knowledge we invited guest lecturers for creating awareness in this

branch of technology.

GUEST LECTURES CONDUCTED IN THE YEAR 2012-13

The first guest lecture was arranged for S.Y.B.Sc students on 15 th September, 2012 by Ms

Nida Pathan, Student at Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune. She delivered the lecture

on ‘Concept of Databases’.

The second guest lecture was for S.Y.B.Sc students in September 2012, on ‘Cell

Signaling’ by Ms. Nidhi Chaudhari, NCCS, Pune.

The third guest lecture was arranged for T.Y.B.Sc students on 22nd September 2012. Mr.

Santosh Gopale, Asst. Professor, Modern College, Shivajinagar, Pune delivered the lecture on

‘Plant Biotechnology’.

WELCOME PROGRAMME FOR F.Y.B.SC STUDENTS

The Department and senior students gave a warm welcome to our F.Y.B.Sc students on 3rd

Sept 2012. Ms. Dimple Davis made all the rounds of tests clear to win her title as ‘Ms Fresher-

2012-2013’

Ms. Deepa J. Shetty, HOD, addressing the students in the Fresher’s Programme

DEPARTMENTAL COMPETITIONS

1. The Department had organized a Poster Competition for F.Y.B.Sc. students on 7th August

2012.Mrs. Vijayalaxmi Shinde, Asst. Professor, Dept. of Environmental Science,AISC,,Pune

and Mrs. Nusarat Shaikh,Asst. Professor, Dept. of Microbiology,AISC,Pune were the judges

for the competition. There were total 15 posters exhibited. The poster entitled ‘Selective

Breeding’ won the first prize.

2. A Paper Presentation Competition was organized for S.Y.B.Sc. students on the topics

related to Cell & Molecular Biology on 25th and 26th August 2012 in the department. Ms.

Divya Pidishetty won the 1st prize. She presented the paper entitled ‘Golden rice is an

effective source of Vitamin A1, 2, 3, 4’

3. A Seminar Competition was organized on recent topics of Biotechnology for T.Y.B.Sc.

students on 1st September 2012. Ms. Sadaf Shaikh won the first prize for the topic “Grass

Biofuels”.

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

The Department of Biotechnology had organized a prize distribution programme on 3 rd

September 2012 in the Assembly hall of our college. The winners of the Departmental

Competitions (Seminar, Paper Presentation and Poster Competitions) were given medals and

certificates. The toppers of the academic year 2011-12 were also given prizes.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Department is actively involved in the research activities of ISTRA (Interdisciplinary

Science and Technology Research Academy)

Ms. Deepa J Shetty is pursuing her Ph.D. in Microbiology at Agharkar Research

Institute, Pune, under the guidance of Dr. P. K. Dhakhephalkar, Scientist E, Microbial

Sciences Division, ARI, Pune. She is working on the collaborative Research project

entitled ‘Novel Plasmid curing Agents’ at Agharkar Research Institute, Pune.

T.Y.B.Sc. students, Ms. Sadaf Shaikh, Tehzeeb Shaikh and Iffat Sayyed are working on

the Research project ‘Expression studies of Nitroreductase gene under microbial stress

using RT-PCR’ under the guidance of Dr. Razia Kutty, Asst. Professor, Dept. of

Chemistry, AISC, Pune.

The Department had organized a meeting with Dr. Padhye, Director, ISTRA on 21 st

September 2012. The Department is currently working in the research area of ‘Drug

Resistance in Bacteria’. The list of students who would be working on Research

projects was given to Dr. Padhye.A meeting of these students with Dr. Padhye is

arranged on 22nd September 2012.

Ms. Sabratunnisa Shaikh, (T.Y.B.Sc.) is working on the Research project

‘Identification and isolation of non-lactose fermenting organisms associated with

diarrhea collected from stool samples of HIV infected and non infected patients’ at

National AIDS Research Institute, Pune under the guidance of Mrs. Sangita

Kulkarni,NARI,Pune.

Ms. Tarannum Khan (S.Y.B.Sc) is working on the Research Project ‘Oxidative stress

on DNA repair’ at Dept of Zoology, S.P. College, Pune under the guidance of Dr.

Manisha Modak.

PARTICIPATION AND CONTRIBUTION OF THE TEACHERS

ALUMNI MEET ORGANIZED BY THE DEPARTMENT

The department of Biotechnology had organized its Alumni Meet on 28th August, 2012

in the department. An active participation from the ex-students was observed. Many of them

agreed to come for the Alumni Meet during the final NAAC visit.Ms. Nida Pathan,MSc-II

student, Bioinformatics Centre, University of Pune showed interest in delivering lectures on

Concepts of Databases, BLAST and FASTA to S.Y.B.Sc students of our department.

PARTICIPATION IN INTER-COLLEGIATE COMPETITION:

T.Y.B.Sc students Ms. Ms. Shruti Nair, Ms. Sadaf Shaikh, Ms. Tehzeeb Shaikh, Rafat

Shaikh are participating in “Students Awareness Contest 2012” They have prepared a

presentation on ‘Nanotechnology: Principle and applications’ They have used innovative

teaching methodology to make the lecture very effective. They were selected at the Intra-

Collegiate level. They have to deliver this lecture in schools of Rural and urban area. If they

perform well, they will be selected for the final competition at Sinhgad College, Pune.

EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

1. Mrs. Shilpa Tambe is an active member of N.S.S committee of our college. The Department

provided help to N.S.S. unit of our college by organizing a programme of Indian Red Cross

Society on ‘Kranti Din’ (8th August 2012)

2. The Department of Biotechnology is actively involved in the activities of the Indian Red

Cross Society, Pune District Branch.

Ms. Deepa J. Shetty, Mrs. Shilpa Tambe and two F.Y.B.Sc students (Ms. Kranti

Waghmare and Ms. Kalyani Kamble ) attended a ‘Training Course for Counselors and

Red Cross Youths’ organized by the Indian Red Cross Society on 12th August 2012 at

Poonawaala Auditorium ,B.M.C.C.,Pune.

10 students of F.Y.B.Sc attended the ‘Youth Peer Education Programme’ conducted by

Indian Red Cross Society, Pune District Branch in August 2012.They are called Peer

Educators of Indian Red Cross Society.

Ms. Shruti Nair (T.Y.B.Sc.), Ms.Tasneem Ghadiyali (S.Y.B.Sc.).Ms.Mansi Damaniya

(F.Y.B.Sc.) participated in Intercollegiate Essay competition organized by Indian Red

Cross Society, Pune District Branch on 5th September 2012.

A group of 11 Students of F.Y.B.Sc participated in ‘Intercollegiate Street Play

competition – VIBES’ organized by Indian Red Cross Society, Pune Dist. Unit on 16th

September 2012.The topic of the play was ‘Awareness on problems of Youth related to

Ragging,Stress,Tensions,Relationship issues & Suicidal tendencies’

Ms. Lehmina Sayyed (S.Y.B.Sc.) participated in Intercollegiate Elocution competition

organized by Indian Red Cross Society, Pune Dist. Unit on 22nd September 2012.The

topic of her speech is ‘Role of citizens in facing Terrorism’
