Finally, a fourth axis fast and rugged enough…

to keep up with thelightning-fast RoboDrill!

For years, RoboDrill owners have had to watch these racehorse VMCs grind to a halt, waiting for slow fourth-axis tables to unclamp, rotate, and clamp. Now, FANUC introduces the DDR – a fourth-axis table designed specifically to complement the speed and versatility of the RoboDrill.

Capable of 150 RPM, the FANUC DDR can unclamp, rotate 180°, and reclamp in less than 0.5 seconds.

Virtually backlash-free, the DDR’s direct drive motor has no gears to wear out or sustain damage. If bumped, it can be easily tuned to original specifications.

A true milling fourth axis, the DDR has a part loading capacity of 220 lb and 221 ft-lb of torque, enough to handle even the most difficult applications.

With its unique combination of speed, strength, and reliability, the DDR is ideal for small volume job shops or OEMs making millions of parts. And, priced at thousands of dollars less than comparable fourth-axis tables, it is an exceptional value.

The world’s most popular small machining centers, RoboDrill VMCs offer milling capabilities unmatched in a 30-taper machine. Available in three sizes with “Big Plus” spindles; 14- or 21-station toolchangers, and the FANUC 31-iA5 Nano control, they provide lightning fast drilling, tapping, deburring, chamfering, as well as reverse tapping to 8,000 RPM. With feedrates to 2362 IPM, rapid traverses to 2125 IPM, accelerations (in X, Y, and Z) to 1.5 G, 1.6-second tool changes (chip-to-chip), a 10,000 RPM spindle, and up to 51.6 ft-lb of torque, the beefy new RoboDrill F makes short work of a wide range of milling, drilling, and tapping operations.

The Mo-Kan Chapter of the American Foundry Society (AFS) held a meeting on November 15th at the Argosy Casino in Kansas City.

The featured speaker for the meeting was Kaeser Compressors’ Branch Manager Drew Johnson. Johnson has been with the company for 11 years and has his factory trained master certification and is Compressed Air Challenge (CAC) level I and II certified.

His topic was Compressor and Compressed Air Treatment.

Johnson spoke about the key factors to consider when evaluating compressed air options. These included equipment costs, energy costs and maintenance costs. “The key is to look at total costs of operating a compressed air system over time,” he noted. “Over time the energy and maintenance costs will equal or exceed the equipment cost.”

He went through several scenarios of typical systems and all the options that can impact costs. Topics covered included size and type of compressor,

moisture control, filtering, temperature and humidity variances and the types of pipes to use.

The audience peppered Johnson with questions after his presentation.

The Mo-Kan AFS can be contacted at: (913) 621-1320.

Economic growth in the United States will continue in 2012, say the nation’s purchasing and supply management ex-ecutives in their December 2011 Semiannual Economic Forecast.

Expectations are for a continu-ation of the economic recovery that began in mid-2009, as indicated in the monthly ISM Report On Busi-ness®. The forecast projects opti-mism about the U.S. economy for 2012. The manufacturing sector, overall, is positive about prospects in 2012 with revenues expected to increase in 17 industries. Capital expenditures, a major driver in the U.S. economy, however, will increase only modestly in the

manufacturing sector. These projections are part of

the forecast issued by the Business Survey Committee of the Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM). The forecast was released by Brad-ley J. Holcomb, CPSM, CPSD, chair of the ISM Manufacturing Business Survey Committee.

Manufacturing OverviewExpectations for 2012 are

positive as 69 percent of survey respondents expect revenues to be greater in 2012 than in 2011. The panel of purchasing and supply executives expects a 5.5 percent net increase in overall revenues for 2012, compared to a 7 percent increase reported for 2011 over

2010 revenues. The 17 manufac-turing industries expecting rev-enue improvement over 2011 are: Computer & Electronic Products; Machinery; Petroleum & Coal Products; Wood Products; Nonme-tallic Mineral Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Compo-nents; Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Furniture & Related Products; Transportation Equip-ment; Paper Products; Printing & Related Support Activities; Plastics & Rubber Products; Food, Bever-age & Tobacco Products; Primary Metals; Fabricated Metal Products; Chemical Products; and Miscella-neous Manufacturing.

“Manufacturing purchasing and supply executives expect to see continued growth in 2012. They are optimistic about their overall business prospects for the first half of 2012, and are even more optimistic about the second half of 2012,” said Holcomb. “Manufacturing has demon-strated its resilience throughout this challenging economic recov-ery period with consistent growth dating back to August of 2009 and our forecast calls for a con-tinuation of that growth in 2012. Respondents expect raw materials pricing pressures in 2012 to be less than they were in 2011, and expect their margins will improve. Manufacturing is now in its 28th consecutive month of growth as measured by and reported in the monthly Manufacturing ISM Re-port On Business®.”

In the manufacturing sec-tor, respondents report operating at 79.2 percent of their normal capacity, down from 83.2 percent

reported in April 2011. Purchasing and supply executives predict that capital expenditures will increase by 1.9 percent in 2012 over 2011, compared to an 11 percent increase reported for 2011 over 2010. Survey respondents also forecast that they will reduce inventories by 1.2 percent in an effort to improve their purchased inventory-to-sales ratio in 2012. Manufacturers have an expectation that employment in the sector will increase by 1.3 per-cent, while labor and benefit costs are expected to increase an average of 2.4 percent in 2012. Manufac-turing purchasers are predicting growth in exports and imports in 2012. Respondents also expect the U.S. dollar to weaken very slightly on average against the currencies of major trading partners.

The panel also predicts the prices they pay for raw materials will increase 2 percent during the first four months of 2012, and will increase an additional 0.9 percent during the balance of the year, with an overall increase of 2.9 percent for 2012. This compares to a re-ported 5.7 percent increase in raw materials prices for 2011 compared with 2010.

Survey respondents report that the most challenging problems facing their businesses as they plan for 2012 are: poor sales (43.9 per-cent); government regulations (22 percent); inflation (17.4 percent); cost of labor (4.5 percent); quality of labor (4.5 percent); taxes (4.5 percent); and interest rates and finance (3 percent).

The panel also indicated that supply chain management practic-es will be improved in 2012 using the following strategies: supplier performance management; strate-gic sourcing/supply base rational-ization; demand planning/supplier lead time reduction; inventory management and control; and process and information systems improvements.

Products; and Computer & Electronic Products.

Manufacturing RevenuesManufacturing survey respon-

dents forecast that business reve-nues for 2012 will be stronger than in 2011. The 69 percent of respon-dents forecasting better business revenues in 2012 than in 2011 es-timate an average nominal (before adjusting for inflation) increase of 9.3 percent in their organizations’ revenues. This is in contrast to an average nominal decrease of 11.4 percent forecast by the 8 percent who predict worse business reve-nues in 2012. Including the 23 per-cent who see no change in 2012, the forecast for overall net nominal increase in business revenues for 2012 over 2011 is 5.5 percent. The manufacturing industries expect-ing revenue improvement over 2011 are: Computer & Electronic Products; Machinery; Petroleum & Coal Products; Wood Products;

Nonmetallic Mineral Products; Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components; Apparel, Leather & Allied Products; Furniture & Related Products; Transportation Equipment; Paper Products; Print-ing & Related Support Activities; Plastics & Rubber Products; Food, Beverage & Tobacco Products; Primary Metals; Fabricated Metal Products; Chemical Products; and Miscellaneous Manufacturing.

Manufacturing Profit MarginsSurvey respondents report that

profit margins decreased on aver-age during the second and third quarters of 2011, as 31 percent experienced an increase in profit margins, 37 percent had lower margins, and 32 percent reported no change. However, expectations are for a significant improvement between now and April of 2012 as 40 percent of respondents forecast better profit. To view the entire

DECEMBER, 2011 19

Does it sometimes seem that America has a love/hate relationship with manufacturing? Perhaps hate is too strong a word. Indifference is probably closer to the truth.

We mention this because, despite a major recession, many companies still can not find the qualified employees they need to expand, or even to meet current demands. This is not a new development as most of you know.

It seems that the general public and the media decided long ago that America would be a service-oriented country, leaving the actual building of real products up to foreigners.

How did it happen then, that a career in manufacturing probably never even entered the mind of most high school graduates? Their counselors, of course, have almost always shunned anything that would point to a tech school. After all, isn’t that basically just auto mechanics? Well, let’s look back a few years.

American manufacturers were the kings of commerce from after the civil war and well into the 1970s with dozens of steel companies serving the auto plants, appliance manufacturers, aircraft and energy industry, construction companies and the military. (At one time we had over 250 firms turning out TV sets and we haven’t had any for years.) What happened?

Other countries discovered the joys of free enterprise where almost everyone wants the best product at the lowest price and they don’t really care where they buy it.

Japanese auto companies took the advice of an American consultant concerning teamwork and let its employees have a major say in quality control, efficiency and clever innovations. On the other hand, U.S. car makers and their well compensated

workers each appeared to have entirely different goals. The same became true for the steel industry as plant after plant was closed or consolidated because their overhead made them uncompetitive with foreign steel.

China is a communist country, but it too, saw the potential for rapid growth through capitalism. By the 1980s, many other U.S. industries were saddled with lavish pension plans, high salaries and were facing competition from overseas that offered quality products at a lower cost. Also, new EPA water and air rules were requiring huge outlays and environmentalists were often opposing new manufacturing plants.

So, even though the industry was now in the midst of the computer age with “clean rooms” and robotic machines, it was (and still is) portrayed with smoke stacks, dark work areas and greasy equipment. By keeping up with the latest tech equipment, firms became ever more efficient, requiring fewer workers. As factory employment dropped, it was wrongly assumed the industry was slowly dying.

Then, for the last 25 or 30 years manufacturers have moved a good deal of their work off shore and retailers have purchased a major portion of their goods from a variety of countries. Manufacturing in the U.S. seemed to be an industry without great career opportunities.

One of the strange things about this “dying industry” is that the U.S. is still the world’s leading manufacturer and produces 22% of the goods in the world; The industry provides 57% of all U.S. exports; its workers earn 18% more than other workers and it offers the highest multiplier effect of any industry at 140. Somehow the administration and the general public are now counting on manufacturing to be a major job creator.

In addition to a poor economy, a major problem is that it’s very difficult to find workers with the specialized skills or even the educational background to be trained for the work required in today’s high tech industrial plants.

The good news is that more high schools and colleges are re-thinking their decisions that shut down many

vocational and technical classes over the last two decades.

And, while the students’ parents may not have envisioned their sons and daughters working with robots at a plant near the railroad tracks, they do realize that student loan debt has now surpassed credit card debt. Thus, plans for medical or law school are changed and the new high school graduates may now be considering enrollment in some sort of technical programs so they’ll at least have a marketable skill and a lot less educational debt.

Lauren Weber, writing in a recent Wall Street Journal, pointed out that while companies have always spent a considerable amount of money either training employees in-house or working with colleges, many had cut back on programs or dropped them entirely during the recession.

Now, according to the American Society for Training and Development, U.S. employers have decided they need to do their own job training. They spent 36% more on learning and development in 2010 than in 2009. A rule of thumb seems to require about 3% of the annual budget for training.

It appeared to be more expensive to bring in outside trainers to custom-tailor your programs as opposed to setting up an educational partnership with a nearby college.

Of course a company can always do what others have done successfully for centuries...set up apprenticeship or on-job-training programs. Some companies have always had them, paying the new hire a decent salary and his or her tuition for classes at a community college. The result is a young person with a savings account and a highly marketable skill without the student loan debt hangover.

If you opt for an apprenticeship program and your applicants seem to think this is a medieval practice, just call it an internship, which is highly popular today. Although it’s supposed to apply only to white collar jobs, it’ll fit in well with the “clean” manufacturing of today.

For most business owners the transfer of assets at death is the largest financial transaction they will ever be involved in. This is so because ownership of the company changes hands, together with life insurance proceeds, retirement plan benefits, the family home, lifetime savings and every other asset.

Yet many entrepreneurs squander the opportunity to craft a family-specific estate plan and set up their own emergency business transition plan for transferring enterprise ownership and control at death – small manufacturers, their suppliers and customers along with the other business people in the chain of distribution are no exception.

The goal in estate planning is simple for most of us: “make sure my assets go to the right people in the right way.” Of course, this means different things to different people, but it typically incorporates the following concerns:

• Determining how much property will pass to each of three classes of beneficiaries – family and friends, charities, IRS

• Preserving family harmony after the senior generation is gone

• A v o i d i n g p r o b a t e administration

• Protecting the family’s hard-earned assets from creditors and predators

• Deciding whether equal shares for all children is really fair

• Training the next generation

to manage wealth they didn’t earn

• Planning for the primary breadwinner’s disability and retirement

• Providing for the surviving spouse as well as “yours-mine-our” children in second marriage situations

• Setting up gifts to favorite charities

F a m i l i e s i n b u s i n e s s confront the same challenges all other families face in planning their financial affairs and setting up their estates; however, they also must deal with some special challenges unique to those who depend on an operating business for their livelihood:

• The sudden death or disability of the owner-operator can reduce/destroy the value of the family’s biggest asset (its business) in a matter of days, weeks, or months

• Unexpectedly losing the head of the company can mean losing the main source of the family’s income

• A Business is very difficult to convert to cash quickly

• Survivors often discover after-the-fact that personal assets outside the business are pledged as collateral for business loans

• Many entrepreneurs are too busy working on day-to-day priorities inside the business t o p r o p e r l y d o c u men t their business systems and processes – lots of critical information is carried around “in their heads” and it’s lost when they are no longer onsite to personally oversee

the business operations• Planning within owner-led

businesses often ignores the requirement of building depth in management and developing a succession plan to ensure orderly transition of control and management when there’s suddenly an empty chair at the head of the boardroom conference table.

When approached with the help of an inter-professional advisory team with experience in exit planning, entrepreneurial estate-succession planning can be a transformative experience... for the company and the family that owns it.

The Lee’s Summit High School (Missouri) FIRST Robotics Team, Team Driven #1730, recently hosted a reception for Fike Corporation and Maruka USA. This reception was to thank Fike Corporation for their generous gift of a Mori Seiki MV-35 CNC vertical machining center. The robotics team presented Fike Corporation with a plaque to commemorate its donation. Fike Corporation is a 66-year-old manufacturer based in Blue Springs, Missouri, that produces commercial and industrial fire protection systems.

The members of Team Driven will use the machining center to manufacture custom parts for their competition robots. With their new CNC mill in place, Lee’s Summit High School students will be able to expand their knowledge of machining processes first hand. Students that are now creating parts and assemblies in a 3-D CAD application as part of their prototype and

design process will now be able to program a part in Mastercam CAD/CAM software, then send it to the CNC controlled vertical machining center to produce the final part. The students are now able to experience the complete product development life cycle from concept to finished product.

With their newly acquired Mori Seiki milling machine the students will develop hands-on CNC experience. Members of Team Driven now have marketable manufacturing skills as they graduate from high school. These skills are useful in a manufacturing career or applied toward a vocational or college education.

To get updates and information on this exciting group of students please visit www.teamdriven.us. Team Driven has approximately 60 students participating each year. These students are sharpening their engineering, manufacturing, and business skills through the robotics competitions. Visit www.fike.com to learn about Fike Corporation. DECEMBER, 2011 27

The new Y3 Precision Ma-chine Tool Leveling System was introduced at the Wichita Industrial Trade Show (WITS) in October.

Developed by three mem-bers, Neil, Steve and Jim of the Youngers’ family, long-time manu-facturing veterans in the Wichita area, the new patent-pending Y3 system improves leveling accu-racy, equalizes loads at jack points, reduces machine base stress, re-duces installation time & effort and makes certifications easier.

The Y3 system uses a special distribution pump and specially designed hydraulic jack cylinders.

The pump has three modes: Float- which floats the machine on jack cylinders for a “rough” level; Individual-micro pumps are used to raise/lower the cylinders in a precise manner to obtain a “final” level position; Synchronous-is used when it is necessary to align the height of a machine to another machine while maintaining the precision level.

Once the machine is level and aligned, mechanical cylinder lock rings are engaged and the pressure in no longer on the cylinders.

The cylinders and hoses are left under the machine so later realignment and re-leveling can be easily performed.

“Traditional precision machine tool leveling processes are time consuming and involve mechanical jacks, wedges and shims,” noted Steve Youngers.

“The Y3 system allows leveling without being under the machine manually adjusting jack screw levels. Re-checking and re-leveling is very easy after that.

For more information on the Y3 Leveling System call (316) 706-4828 or email [email protected].
