NAPM Wichita Starts Year; Learns About Economy From PMI Index

Chairman & Honors Past Presidents

Above: Norbert Ore, chairman of the ISM’s PMI Index was the featured speaker at the meeting.

Above: Donna Goodnight received her CPSM certificate at the meeting.

Above (l-r): NAPM Wichita past presidents at the meeting (years served as president) included: (back row) Curtis Howell (08-09 & 09-10), Dallas Shaffer (86-87), Bill Anderson (83-84); George Anderton (79-80), Ed Moon (07-08), Wayne Decker (74-75), Richard LeMaster (70-71), Sonya Kellogg (04-05) (front row) Gene Sharp (01-02 & 05-06), Scott Smith (93-94), Carol Bevelhymer (89-90), Judy Getchell (87-88), Fred Trautman (01-02) and Debbie Jarrell (06-07).

The Wichita chapter of the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) kicked off its year with a meeting on September 9th at the Airport Hilton in Wichita.

The featured speaker for the meeting was Norbert Ore, chair of the ISM’s monthly Report on Business®

which creates the Purchasing Manager Index (PMI) that is nationally recog-nized as an important forecast tool for the US economy.

Ore’s presentation was titled U.S. Ecnomy in Recovery???.

Ore spoke about the process involved in creating this monthly report. 350 purchasing managers fill out the monthly survey, providing the raw data needed to produce the report. The PMI is a composite index season-ally adjusted for new orders, produc-tion, supplier deliveries, inventories and employment. An index percent-age above 50 percent generally means the economy is expanding, while anything below 50 percent indicates contraction. Separate reports are cre-ated for manufacturing and services.

During his presentation Ore cov-ered a wide range of topics includ-ing: forecasts by sector, government policies, inflation, unemployment, exchange rates.

Ore discussed how the PMI has expanded overseas as the JP Morgan Chase Global PMI.

“Business cycles are a part of our

lives,” Ore commented as he discussed the various ups and downs of the economy. “Manufacturing needs GDP growth to be over 2% to be healthy.” He also noted that currently “we’re moving in the right direction.”

15 Years of Full-Service Installation, Training & Maintainance

By Mike Niedenthal, project manager, MAMTCFor many companies, maintaining the momentum

of a continuous improvement program for longer than a few months can be challenging. In fact, only slightly more than one-third of Lean improvement programs sustain meaningful and measurable results beyond a short-term period, according to the Lean Learning Center in Novi, Mich.

In spite of this sobering statistic, achieving posi-tive, permanent change is definitely within reach for those who design a program that positions them for success from the start. Companies that sustain Lean improvements over the long term share a few common characteristics.

They have a clear vision of where they want to be in 3-5 years. The vision includes clearly defined performance measures that management intends to achieve. This clarity enables the work force to visual-ize the connection between their work and the business objectives of the company. These measurements are tied together so individual departments can see how each is performing—eliminating the “silo mentality”

Succeeding With Lean: Four Tips for Long-Term Improvement

of setting independent goals that don’t support the overall business objectives.

They know that Lean is a growth strategy, not a cost-cutting measure. Lean does not mean “Less Em-ployees Are Needed.” While any long-term continuous improvement effort must focus on the bottom line, Lean is about building strategic capabilities that enable your company to do things others in your industry can’t. Implementing Lean methods to reduce costs or, even worse, reduce payroll, is a recipe for failure.

They engage the work force, providing support and incentives for employees’ best efforts. Compa-nies that are successful with Lean empower the entire work force to take ownership of their work areas and responsibilities. They establish “Nike zones,” giv-ing workers authority to implement changes without waiting for approvals—they can “just do it.” This promotes a culture in which everyone—from senior leadership to line worker—continuously looks for op-portunities to improve.

They understand that sustaining continuous im-provement long-term is much more than introduc-ing a set of tools and techniques. When adopting new technical capabilities like Lean Manufacturing, these companies develop a knowledgeable and engaged work force that can prioritize problems and determine which technical capability (or tool) will fix the most pressing issues. In other words, they want their work force to not only have the best tools, but know how and why to use them.

Mike Niedenthal is a project manager and Lean expert at The Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center (MAMTC), which provides measur-able productivity and profitability gains to manufacturers throughout Kansas. A recipient of NIST-MEP National Prac-

titioner of the Year Award, Niedenthal helps companies of all sizes improve processes and overall efficiency to achieve better profitability.

Thirty-six customers from the Midwest joined Icon Machine Tool for machine demonstrations and plant tour at TRUMPF in Farm-ington, CT on August 17-19. “We are still surprised that most people don’t realize that TRUMPF builds seven laser models and one punch-ing model from the ground up in Farmington, CT,” says Jeff Hall, Vice-President of Icon Machine Tool.

Seminar participants took a close look at different technologies and how manufacturers can use them to become more competitive in today’s market. They also looked closely at new laser technolo-gies that are just now coming to market. The differences between CO2 lasers and fiber TruDisc lasers were discussed. Since TRUMPF builds both styles in Farmington, CT, participants were able to see them side by side. “TRUMPF is a trusted resource when it comes to resonator manufacturing” says one participant. “TRUMPF’s compari-son is trusted because they offer both technologies and they have been building both for decades”. Another highlight of the seminar series was TRUMPF’s SYNCRO style of manufacturing presented by Robert Castonguay, SYNCRO Manager at TRUMPF.

The team at Icon Machine Tool is happy to offer customers more than just machine tools. “We re-ally enjoy getting people out of their element to see what’s new in the industry and get them talking with other manufacturers,” says Shane Stufflebean, President of Icon Machine Tool. This technol-ogy seminar was so successful that Icon plans to sponsor another seminar in the spring of 2011. If you would like to be invited to the

18 MID-AMERICA COMMERCE & INDUSTRY

In the Broadway play, “Big River,” Huckleberry Finn’s Dad sings a rousing song that says, “Dadgum government, they got

their dang hands in every pocket of my britches.”

Since this song was written in the 1980s by Roger Miller, we’re

not sure Roger realized that Mr. Finn was the stereotypical town drunk and the chances of him ow-ing any taxes were slim and none. Nevertheless, since Mark Twain was often critical of the govern-ment, he would probably have approved of the lyrics, feeling that it was reflecting the attitude of the people in this little river town even in 1884.

Well, the natives are restless again and they aren’t just saying dadgum. For years the public’s trust in government and in Con-gress has been falling. It isn’t always just about taxes, but the fact that for businesspeople, the government has never been so “in their face” before.

Just as one example, after the Supreme Court ruled that car-bon dioxide was a “poison,” the government’s EPA czars were free to dictate what energy systems would meet their “green” criteria, no matter the costs to your com-pany. If you opt for the “greener” systems it will be more expensive, but you could get generous sub-sidies. If you’re happy with your “non-green” energy source, there will surely be extra taxes to pay to subsidize your “green” competi-tors. But, of course you’re still free to choose.

With the government telling us what light bulbs we can buy, how much water our bathroom stools can use, and what drinks our children can purchase at school, there soon won’t be much left to regulate.

Anyway, how did we get in this predicament? We believe it started with career politicians. Once our “servants” weren’t serving two or three terms, then returning to their previous job or business, it was all over. Now the key to success becomes staying in office, or at least in power.

Somehow this always seems to involve using taxpayer money

to “bring home the bacon” and enact favorable legislation (loop holes) for their big contributors. Keeping tax codes and bills complicated means the average citizen has no real idea of what is going on. Therefore Congress enacts legislation it hasn’t read either and relies upon lawsuits and appeals to find the flaws and unintended consequenc-es. This can take months or years and provides work for many, many lawyers.

Even if voters do “throw the rascals out,” they sel-dom go home, but become lobbyists or take high govern-ment posts.

Charlie Reese, retired columnist of the Orlando Sentinel, says we have only ourselves to blame. He figures that we are letting 545 people have complete control over 300 million of us.

“One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices...are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the do-mestic problems that plague this country,” he says.

He excludes the Federal Reserve Board, because that problem was created by Congress, and lobbyists because they have no legal authority. They may offer a bribe, but the politician has the power to reject or accept it, Reese writes.

“Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them. If both

Michael Ehrenstrom of Waterloo, Ill. representing Ranken Technical College in the Precision Machining Technology competition at the national SkillsUSA Championships won the gold medal.

Ehrenstrom competed against 30 other participants and finished first in the post-secondary class.

“This is a really big accomplishment for this young man,” said Tom Ely, Pre-cision Machining Technology depart-ment head at Ranken and a SkillsUSA faculty advisor. “This not only means that he is the best out of the 30 other students he competed against at nation-als, but also the 1,000 others he com-peted against at the regional and state contests.”

Since 1907, Ranken Technical College has served the St. Louis region by providing skilled labor through hands-on, state-of-the-art training in a variety of technical disciplines. Ranken prepares students for careers in techni-cal fields. The College offers Associate degrees in five core divisions; Automo-tive, Construction, Electrical, Informa-tion Technology and Manufacturing, as well as Bachelor of Science degrees in Architectural Technology and Applied Management.

Democrats and Republicans are against deficits, why do we have deficits?

“It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people that stand con-victed–by present acts–of incom-petence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people.

“When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

“If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair. If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red. If they don’t receive social security, but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.

“Don’t let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regula-tors, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. There are no insoluble government problems.

“Above all, don’t let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like ‘the economy,’ ‘inflation,’ or ‘poli-tics’ that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do,” Reese concludes.

Whether you’re very happy with our government as it is or if you think we’ve lost control, the point we’re trying to make is that our government is supposed to be the servant (as in public servant).

The communist party ruled the U.S.S.R. for decades with no more than 3% of the population being communist. Surely we can exercise some control over a piddling group of 545.

the 2010 new generation

After more than 20 years of industry firsts, we figured 2010 would be a good year to “up the ante” again. So we looked at any and every way to make Haas VMCs better,

and then made one last change: We added more value.

IMPROVED: motion control coolant containment • chip evacuation

CNC interface • ergonomics • serviceability r e l e a s e d f o r a c t i v e d u t y : 0 1 . 0 1 . 1 0
