McCall Matters April 2017

General Manager’s Letter Bob Casler

During the month of March it really felt like February. In fact, last March they said it was

one of the warmest we had ever experienced. Let’s hope that April will really make a comeback

especially with the opening of the golf season and all of the great events we have in store for the

membership.

During the month of April comes our traditional Breakfast with the Easter Bunny on

Saturday, April 8. Every year this is a sellout so make your reservations now. Our first dinner buffet

in April will be held on Tuesday, April 11, to coincide with the opening day of our Tuesday Night

Golf League. We will also have another Tuesday Night Buffet on April 25. On the nights that we do

not have a buffet scheduled on a Tuesday, we will keep the Grille at McCall open from 5:00 PM

through dusk depending on the business and our crowd of members, so please support your Club.

Don’t forget to sign up now for our Spring Scramble on April 15. Chef Bill has another great menu

planned to satisfy your culinary expectations. Mother’s Day at McCall is right around the corner so

look for a flier coming out soon! We will have two seating’s so we can accommodate all our

members. For information and reservations on all events, please call Bill Shields at 610-734-7900 or

email him at [email protected].

Our Pro Shop is gearing up with some great new inventory so stop by, sign up for the

Tuesday Night Golf League while there is still time, and don’t forget to purchase your VIP Pass for

the 2017 season. If you are looking to secure a cart for the Spring Scramble, call Eric for more

information at 610-734-7903. Our Women’s Golf Opening Day Luncheon will be held on April 26.

We would love to see some new ladies out on the course this year.

The Grille at McCall will officially open for the season on April 1. Bill Shields along with

Tom and Omar are revising the menu for 2017 and it will be available by May 1. I think you will

enjoy some of the changes. During the month of April, the Grille will be closed on Mondays but

McCall Matters April 2017

General Manager’s Letter Bob Casler

At this time I would like to introduce Gracie Sloane as our new Marketing & Events

Coordinator at McCall. Just in a few short weeks she has proposed some new ideas for our all

new website created to interact with our members and social media outlets. If you see Gracie

around the Club, help us welcome her to our McCall family. Please check us out on Facebook,

Twitter and Instagram. We are so excited to see how many members will post their Breakfast

with the Easter Bunny Pictures. If you need help with any website or social media issues, please

don’t hesitate to contact Gracie at 610-734-7934 or [email protected] or just call

and give her a warm welcome.

In our catering department, March has been about the same as last year. It is evident that

our food and staff make every event a special occasion. March has brought back our “senior

groups” and a number of different events that include our own PECO business meetings. Our

calendar is filling up nicely as we start the season. April is on the move with the holiday and golf

business but May is just about filled but not with the premium events we would like every

weekend. We do have some dates available so if you are planning an event consider McCall.

Call Bill Shields at 610-734-7900 or email him at [email protected].

During the next few months, I hope everyone enjoys spending time at the Club.

Remember, we are here for you! Don’t hesitate to call me with questions or comments at

610-734-7926 or email me at [email protected].

Let’s all strive to make this our best year ever! I hope everyone has a great golf

season!!! Spring is the time for new beginnings! Oh, by the way, we will be giving out free

drinks to everyone who stops by over the first weekend of April! APRIL FOOLS’!

April 1 and I am no fool, but the only one who has been fooling with us is Mother Nature.

Wow, what a couple of weeks of winter weather she threw at us after being fairly gentle. Right

before the storm we were gearing up for the season. The course was in good shape and starting

to grow a little. We had mowed greens, tees, approaches and fairways, aerated tees and were

getting ready to do greens and riding carts were just a couple of days away from returning to the

course and then the storm hit our almost 80 acres with ice the next day. It took us three days to

clear everything including that long sidewalk along Lynn Boulevard. The township always helps

us by plowing more snow on to it. Hopefully by the time you read this, the snow is gone, the

course is open and we are in full swing and Mother Nature is being kind to us.

We had a lot of tree pruning done over the winter and also some takedowns of some dead

or dying trees. I will let you search them out when you come back to play. Riding carts are here,

serviced and ready to go. I hope by April 1 or there about they are rolling but you all know carts

are very weather dependent early in the season. The turf has to be active and the ground has to be

relatively dry so keep your fingers crossed.

You will notice a lot of improvements in the clubhouse as we replaced all stained ceiling

tiles in the dining room and it looks brand new. Also we got the drapes cleaned and the room

received fresh paint and some carpet repairs. Fresh painting was also done in the sun porch,

fireplace room, the main hall and stairway up to and including Conference Rooms A and B, so the

joint is ready to go. The handicap restroom had a new floor installed and many maintenance items

were completed so it has been a busy winter inside and out. We look forward to another good golf

season and seeing all of you out on the course. As always, thanks for being a member at McCall.

Happy Spring everyone! It was nice to actually enjoy some springtime weather during the

end of winter. Hopefully that continues all through the season. Please take a look at the 2017

Tournament Schedule to see what peaks your interest. We have a lot going on at the Club and hope

you take full advantage of what we have to offer. Don’t forget to stop in at the Pro Shop and get

geared up for the year. Check out all the new FootJoy apparel and shoes. Don’t see what you’re

looking for? Don’t worry! Chances are we can get it for you. If you are looking to update your golf

attire or equipment, you may want to think about joining the VIP program. It is a no brainer. Read

down below to see what it is all about. Stop in to the Pro Shop and we can clarify it more. Just

remember, it is all about the discounts! Hope to see you soon! Here’s to a great 2017!

Bag Tags

Please stop by and get your bag tag for 2017. We ask that you get your tag before heading

out to play. Dues can now be paid in the Pro Shop. Please note that you cannot receive your bag

tag until ALL fees have been paid in full. A $50 late fee is now added to dues since you missed the

February 28 deadline. Hopefully you have sent your payments in already!

Rules of McCall

We ask all of you to be vigilant while out on the golf course. We will need you to be our

eyes and ears along with our rangers. Please let the Pro Shop know if any rules are being broken.

We will deal with the issues at hand. Thank you so much for your cooperation. We are not looking

forward to suspending any rule violators. We just want everyone to follow the rules and enjoy their

time out on the course. If you need a copy of the rules to refresh your memory, feel free to stop by

the Pro Shop to pick one up.

GHIN Handicaps

Since we are a yearly membership, we inactivate everyone’s handicaps in the off season.

We will activate your handicap when you come in for your bag tag. This is the only way we can

keep from being charged for those people who no longer keep their membership at McCall. If you

are away in Florida, and have paid your dues for 2017, please contact me and I will activate your

handicap. GAP team captains will give me a list of those who have agreed to play, and I will

activate those players so they will be eligible by the deadline date. Please stop in and get your bag

tag as soon as you can and I will activate your handicap that day.

The Opening Day Scramble will be held on Saturday, April 15 and is open to all members

and their guests. The format will be 5-person teams and the field will be limited to 26 teams. A

full buffet breakfast will be served at 8:00 AM and the Scramble will start promptly at 9:30 AM.

Lunch and prizes will follow the event. Payment for this event must be made by Friday, April 14.

Please call the Pro Shop to reserve your spot. As you know, we only have 18 riding carts. Please

reserve your carts ahead of time. We will be able to order extra carts if we have enough carts

reserved for the event so please do not wait to reserve them. We do have a cutoff time to order

extra carts. Cart fees will be $50 ($25 per rider). Please make sure to get your payment in as

soon as possible. Cost for the Scramble is $55 for Members and $70 for Guests. Payments made

the day of the event will incur a $5 added fee.

Tuesday Night Golf League (April 11 – June 6)

Everyone who played in the golf league last year should have seen the email that went out

with the entry form. Please turn in your form as soon as possible. There are only 80 spots and

they do fill up quickly. New members are encouraged to call the Pro Shop for details and

registration. The Pro Shop can be reached at 610-734-7903. The Tuesday Night Golf League will

start on April 11 and run for nine weeks. The price for the league will be $40. We will revert

back to the round robin match play format. This is a great way to meet new faces and enjoy some

friendly competition. Please contact the Pro Shop for more details!

Senior/Super Senior Championship (Update)

We will make a slight change to the Senior/Super Senior Championship. In past years, we

would allow those participating in this event to tee off at any time on Saturday or Sunday. We

will now move to a tee time system for these days. The tee times will be set from 8:00 AM and

run until 9:00 AM. We will pair all players together during this allotted time. If you are

interested in playing, please start planning on blocking a day off on your calendar for either

Saturday or Sunday. We will have more details in the future. Please contact me with any

questions you may have. I hope you can fit this event into your schedule.

Club Championship (Rubenstein)

Qualifying for this year’s club championship will take place starting May 8 until the end

of the day on May 22. Two rounds must be played in this timeframe in order to be eligible for

match play. You may play up to four rounds. Only those who want to try to qualify for the

championship bracket (played with no handicaps) must play qualifying rounds. Those who wish

to be flighted in the handicap brackets only need to call the Pro Shop to sign up. These players

must sign up before May 22. No late entries will be allowed, as brackets cannot be changed once

they are made due to handicaps. Once the brackets are set, players may start playing their

matches.

Wednesday Night Ladies Beginner’s League

Ladies, are you interested in playing golf but never played before or are just starting out?

If you answered “yes”, then this is the league for you. Come out and join other ladies who are in

the same situation as you. This is a great time to enjoy some instruction and play on the course.

We will key on all the fundamentals of the swing, short game, putting, and etiquette. There is NO

pressure associated with this league. It is put in place for you to have fun and learn how to play

this great game. This year’s league will run every Wednesday night from May 3 until June 28.

We will begin at 5:30 PM and end at 7:00 PM. Cost for the league is $10 for members and $20

for guests for each session. This price includes a half-hour group lesson prior to heading out on

the course. I will be conducting the group lesson and supervising the play on the course. Please

call the Pro Shop for details and to register for the league.

The Pro Shop Eric Figueroa, PGA Golf Professional VIP Pass

The VIP Pass will be offered once again this year. Please do not miss out on this great

opportunity. There is no deal like it ANYWHERE! Here is how it works:

Cost is $125 and you receive $125 in merchandise.

20% discount on all apparel, accessories and guest fees for the season.

10% off all equipment purchases (off retail price only).

5% off a dozen golf balls.

$5 off 18-hole cart fees.

This is what you call a no brainer. No retail store will ever come close to this deal. The

Pro Shop will be offering the following clothing lines: FootJoy, Greg Norman, Page & Tuttle,

Antigua and Adidas. We will also carry FootJoy shoes, socks and rain wear. Titleist equipment

will be well represented in the shop. McCall is now a Titleist exclusive ball account. This means

we will carry only Titleist balls. We have accounts with all major brands and can special order

anything you may need. Just remember that the initial $125 must be used up by the end of the

year. Any balance will be forfeited come January 1, 2018.

Corporate/Outing Merchandise

Do you own a business or have buying power for the company you work for? Would you

be interested in having merchandise with your company’s logo on it for events or to give to

customers? If so, stop in the Pro Shop and speak with me about some ideas that would work

great for you. We have several companies that can take care of your needs. It would be a nice

touch to have logoed items such as golf balls, hats, shirts, duffle bags and so many other options.

I look forward to talking to you about the endless options we have for you!

Golf Lessons

Golf lessons are available by appointment. Please contact me at 610-734-7924 to

schedule a lesson. Now is a great time to get your game in shape for the 2017 season. Clinics

(adult & juniors) and group lessons are being created as we speak. Please keep an eye out for

dates, times, and details. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding lessons,

clinics, and group lessons.

This is the issue each year that I get to welcome everyone back to playing and while I

know that the appropriate weather will get here sometime soon, it has just been a little hard to

figure out exactly when that will be. Saturday, March 25, was a great day for golf and a LOT of

people took advantage of the day to get a round in, but before and since then it has been hard to

predict what will be happening. Like all of you, I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of our great

spring golfing weather. Then it will really be “Welcome Back Everyone!”

The 2017 schedules for McCall and GAP are out. Line up your calendar to take

advantage of your access to all the varied events on these two schedules that your McCall

membership brings. It is already time to get signed up for some of these events, starting with the

Spring Scramble (April 15), the Tuesday Night Golf League (starting April 11) and the

Wednesday morning Women’s Golf League. Don’t forget, in early May, the Women’s Beginner

League and Clinic (Wednesday evenings) and the Rubenstein Club Match Play Championship

qualifying, starting May 8.

Tuesday Night Golf League: Signups have opened for this year’s league. I really hope that you

seriously consider signing up for this McCall mainstay (35+ years running). It is truly a fun event,

brings you together with old and new golfing friends, helps you improve your game and gives

you an excuse to go out to the Club every Tuesday night. While at the Club, you can use your

food minimum money to grab a bite and a drink. This year, in response to members’ requests, the

league format has been returned to straight up match play competition.

Golf Teams: This year we will have FOUR (4) Teams in the annual GAP Golf Team Matches

(the oldest and largest team competition in the U.S.). McCall will be one of only 21 clubs, out of

the record 139 clubs participating in 2017, which will have four or more teams playing. Thanks to

the team leaders for all their efforts in making this happen: John O’Rourke (overall coordinator

and 3rd & 4th Team Captain), Ron Bonenfant (1st Team Captain) and Roland Thomas (2nd Team

Captain).

Junior PGA Golf Program Team: McCall will again be fielding a junior’s team in a PGA

national program. This relatively new program is for boys and girls 13 and under and is based on

a more team-oriented approach to learning the game and competition. Big thanks to Ari Flaisher

for heading up this activity for the second year. More information will be available in the near

future.

Golf Committee: As usual, the Golf Committee has already had its first two meetings for the year

and is working on a number of initiatives for 2017. The Committee meeting schedule for the rest

of 2017 is: April 19, June 21 (ride-around-tour), September 27 and November 29. As always, the

invitation is open for you to submit any suggestions, questions or concerns that you have. If you

have any interest, or any questions, please contact me or any other Committee member.

Volunteers: We are looking forward to another year of great work by our volunteers group. They

have all been a wonderful addition to McCall. Thanks to you all! This program has been so

successful that they have room to add some more to their ranks. If you have any interest or

questions, or thoughts on other possible volunteer activities, please contact Rich Flebbe, our

Green Chairman, or Joe Candelore.

GAP

GAP’s 2017 schedule is listed on their website at www.gapgolf.org. Take a look at the

number of varied events, including varied handicap levels and especially the great Member Play

Days series (11 events, running from late April thru mid-October). Look for the list under its

own link at the top of the GAP website. The entry lottery process for the whole list has opened.

These events are played under the Stableford scoring format, which is a lot more fun and a lot

less pressure.

GAP Handicap System: Here is the annual start of our season list. (1) The system goes ‘live’ for

local scores on April 1. (2) Any scores that you were lucky enough to play in a “warm weather”

area (such as South Carolina, Florida, Arizona, California…) should now be posted. The date of

whenever you get to post it is good enough, but you can use the calendar feature to list each score

by its actual date. (3) A new USGA rule (last year) states that scores made while playing alone,

no matter how much the playing rules are followed, cannot be posted. (4) Handicap updates are

issued twice a month on the 1st and 15th thru mid-November.

GAP Membership: I do want to remind you again this year of this great benefit from your McCall

membership. GAP membership comes as a built-in part of your McCall membership. This in-

cludes membership in the GAP handicap system. I would like to encourage all members to take

advantage of this great benefit (access to all the great GAP event schedules, the handicap system,

and the opportunity to become a volunteer at GAP tournaments).

Magazines: I hope that you are getting the two free magazines that come as a benefit of your GAP

membership which comes as a part of your McCall membership--the quarterly GAP magazine

and the monthly issue of Golf Digest. You have to sign up in the My GAP Locker section of their

website. The My GAP Locker and the two magazines are all free! If you need any help, call the

GAP office.

Volunteers: The GAP tournament volunteers’ staff for 2017 is now set, but if you are interested in

getting involved in 2018, you can call the GAP office or contact one of our McCall volunteers,

for more information. McCall has five volunteers this year (myself, John O’Rourke, Howard

Hansell, Frank Cook and, new to the group this year, Roland Thomas).

Last year we informed you that Edgemont Country Club ceased operations in March. This

year a number of courses have been sold to private companies (White Manor, Philmont and

Meadowlands). For now, all three will continue to be run as private membership courses.

Hopefully by the time you read this the weather will have turned in our favor and we will

all be out there getting our fill of playing. (Is that possible?) One last annual statement, for the

good of your game, you should really consider getting some lessons with Eric.

From The Putting Green

March is quite the contrarian, given that February broke all sorts of records with warmer

than normal temperatures and then when folks expected March to be similar the cold and snow

hits like a nuclear attack. Now that spring is here the warmth of February and the cold of March

will fade into the recesses of your mind.

Snow birds have begun their annual flight back after a winter of enjoying the warmth of

southern regions. While February was an exceedingly warm month in the Philadelphia region,

the southern parts of the country were experiencing even warmer daily temperatures. As the days

continue increasing in daylight and folks prep for the Tuesday Night Golf League and other club

activities, there is no reason to complain. The winter of 2017 is over!

April may be the month of continued temperature change and the beginning of

consistently warmer days but still some cool nights for great sleeping with both the heat and a/c

off but it is also the beginning of outdoor picnics, baseball and relaxing in the sunshine. Folks,

retrieve the lawn chairs from hibernation and let the games begin.

A short note on the McCall Volunteer Program is worth mentioning. The program was

initiated several years back and has been a success but with most folks there comes a time for a

changing of the guard as the original folks step aside and others are needed to fill the space that

was vacated. The program is open to all members and each member is encouraged to find an

hour or two for spending some time helping out as their schedule permits. Should you have any

interest, please contact Joe.

Spring has just arrived and it is hard to believe as I am writing this article that there

is still snow on the golf course but that is the bad news. The good news is that this past weekend

when it was 71 degrees it cleared everything up and the golfers were back out on the golf course.

I am looking forward to a very active season at the Club and I also want to inform you that

beginning in April we will be keeping the Grille Room open later this season. In order for this to

work, we need your support so please stop in and grab a quick bite to eat along with a few adult

beverages. We will have a new menu in place for the Grille Room by May 1 but in the mean time we

will have a limited menu along with daily specials available through April. Omar and Tommy are

looking forward to taking care of you again this year.

Employee Report

We have a new Marketing & Events Coordinator at the Club and her name is Gracie and she

comes to us from Brookside Country Club up in the Pottstown area. She has already been a nice

addition to us. She has updated our website and social media outlets and has been working alongside

of me with our outside events. I already know that she is going to be a very nice addition to McCall

so if you see Gracie around the Club stop and introduce yourself and say hello to her.

As most of you are aware, Tommy our Grille Room cook and bartender had some health

issues over the past year or so but recently had a great experience at Lankenau and we all send our

get well messages and prayers for a speedy recovery. Tom we all miss you and hope to see you soon

“dropping” something in the Grille! Just kidding, TOM, we all miss you a great deal!

Marketing & Events Coordinator Gracie Sloane

My name is Gracie Sloane and I am very excited to be here at McCall as the new

Marketing & Events Coordinator! Some background about me, I just graduated from Penn State

in December with a degree in Marketing & Management. While continuing my education, I

worked at Brookside Country Club in Pottstown. I’ve been in the country club business since I

was 16 years old starting as a Pro Shop Assistant and doing all positions in between from

waitress and hostess to managing the pool. Working all the various positions, allowed me to have

a better understanding of the staff, which is a large advantage in the hospitality industry. Using

what I learned at Penn State combined with my experience in the club business, I strive to bring a

lot to this position and provide guests with the best experience! I think McCall and I are a great

fit for each other and I look forward to learning from Bill and Bob while providing fresh

prospective!

I started at McCall mid-March and I have been busy since day one! All of our social

media Twitter (McCallGolf&CC), Facebook (McCall Golf & Country Club) and Instagram

(McCallGolf CC) are all up-to-date and will be posted to regularly so like and follow McCall.

Additionally, I have been spending a lot of time working on our WeddingWire page and making

improvements to our new website that will be coming soon! I am excited to be learning

something new about the Club every day and simply learning how we do things here so I am able

to book events. Lastly, it seems that I have brought spring with me with the change of the floral

arrangements throughout the Club.

I truly am excited to be here and look forward to getting to know the membership!

Culinary Corner William Bodek, Chef

With spring officially here, we need Mother Nature to bring the warmer temperatures. As

you know, this is a great time to visit your local produce market as spring vegetables will be

available in abundance. For an example, apricots, artichokes, asparagus, corn, butter lettuce,

green beans, pineapple, strawberries, and many others are available. Just check with your local

produce market for others that are in season. Here is the recipe for this month.

Penne with Asparagus and Cherry Tomatoes (Spring)

Ingredients

8 ounces penne pasta

3 tablespoons olive oil

2 garlic cloves, minced

1-1/2 pounds thin asparagus, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

2 cups (about 9 ounces) cherry tomatoes

1 cup shelled fresh peas

1/2 cup low-sodium chicken stock

1 cup grated Parmesan

2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the pasta and cook until tender but

still firm to the bite, stirring occasionally, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain the pasta, reserving about

1/2 cup of the pasta water.

In a large sauté pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant,

about 1 minute. Add the asparagus, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 3 minutes until

slightly soft. Add the cherry tomatoes and peas. Cook for 2 minutes. Pour the chicken stock into

the pan and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook until the tomatoes start to burst and the stock is

reduced by half, about 3 minutes.

Transfer the asparagus mixture to a large serving bowl. Add the cooked pasta and one half of the

Parmesan. Toss well, adding reserved pasta water, if needed, to loosen the pasta. Garnish with the

remaining Parmesan and chopped basil.
