JUNIOR CO-ORDINATORS REPORT Well another very successful season of junior cricket has drawn to a close at Monbulk. Over 165 local kids played cricket at Monbulk this season. We again had 7 junior teams, involving about 85 kids and about the same amount participated in our successful Milo in2Cricket program. I love our cricket club and am very proud of our junior program. Our program is very well respected in the community and the association and I have no doubt we do it as well or better than most clubs – in regards to participation, the culture of sportsmanship, and producing kids that want to continue playing cricket in our seniors. I spent two weeks over the xmas break (U14 rep carnival) talking to many junior co-ordinators, coaches and parents from other clubs all over Melbourne and others within our association throughout the season – these discussions reinforced the strength of our program and what we are doing is working. The strength of our junior club is due almost entirely to the quality of the people managing our teams. I would like to thank all of the coaches, team managers, scorers and other helpers (too many to mention here) on behalf of all parents for helping their kids participate and enjoy playing cricket. All of our coaches did a magnificent job in skill development at each age group as well as teaching and modelling sportsmanship and playing in the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. A huge thanks and well done to: Tom Watson & Brian Martin (U16’s), Rick Lamers (U14’s), Duncan Maher (U12 Gold) assisted by Thomas Badgery, Geoff Field (U12 Maroon), Aaron Gillard & Chris Defina (U11’s), Duane Kay & Rohan Piesley (U10 Maroon) & Damian Smethurst (U10 Gold). Thanks also to Chris Defina, Bronwyn Badgery, Daniel Clark and all of the senior club for supporting, encouraging and mentoring our juniors throughout the season. This occurred at junior trainings, senior trainings, randomly in the nets, in the Logcabin and especially during Saturday afternoon senior games for the many juniors that played seniors throughout the season. I really appreciate this and love this about our club. Thanks and well done to Damian Howard and team for their amazing work with our Milo program. Last season our U17’s wore the colored maroon and gold shirt and it was an aim of mine to see all of our juniors in this shirt. Many thanks to Rick Lamers (& Traditional Stairs) for sponsoring the shirts and making this a reality this season. I reckon they looked awesome (as seen in the photo on previous page) and I know the kids loved them as did the local paper who continually included our junior photos. A huge thanks must also go to ‘Nexus Travel & Cruise’ in Monbulk for their fantastic support of our ‘Stewart Lever Junior Development Program’ which included the indoor development clinic in the September school holidays. Make sure you visit Nexus for all of your travel needs and thank them for their support. On the field, the weather was the greatest obstacle this season, especially for our Friday night teams with many nights abandoned due to heat and rain. Our U16’s, U14’s & U12 Gold all made the finals, which you can read about in the coach’s reports. This is obviously an indication of a successful season. U12 Maroon didn’t actually win a game, but also had a successful season in terms of improvement and were a big part of Gold’s semi final. They were very unlucky to not win a game, losing narrowly a few times and were set to win at least two other games when the weather again interrupted the match. The U11’s played their first season of hard ball cricket and improved dramatically over the season. Our 18 new U10’s really enjoyed their first season of cricket playing in the U10 Big Bash competition. Next season we are hoping (we will) have two U16 teams, which is great for the future of our club especially considering we didn’t have one top age team two seasons ago. I look forward to many of these boys playing senior cricket, as some did this season. I also hope to play some senior cricket myself with these boys next season. We will also welcome some U10’s into the junior ranks from our Milo program. Thanks again to all of the families involved in the Monbulk junior cricket club for their support and for making it an enjoyable place to be. See you all next season. Steve Utting

Monbulk U16 – 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report

The 2015/16 cricket season was another full of accomplishments for the under 16's team. The boys started the season off well accounting for many of the lower sides on their way to the top of the ladder. They were led well this year by their captain Scott Bennett, who had his first year of captaincy and the boys learned many new skills of the game. Running between the wickets and taking on the game late was a particular focus for the team and in one game they managed to make nearly 150 runs off of their 25 overs in a one day game, which was nearly a run per ball of the innings on average. Aussie, Tam, Tom, Brayden and Dan were the big contributors with the bat this year with Tam retiring in the last game of the season against Lysterfield after hitting a 6 and Dan making over 50 against Eildon Park one game with some big shots and boundaries. Michael, Scott Buckley, Flynn, Luke, Dan and Tam were the main wicket takers throughout the season as well. Michael took 5 wickets in one game and won the competition bowling award. Tam was always reliable and sometimes bowled very tight. He didn't always take the wickets himself but the person bowling from the other end benefited from his bowling. Scott also bowled with good pace and took most of his wickets towards the end of the year including the first wicket in the semi final when he clean bowled the opposition opening batter. Some other important mentions should go to the three U14 boys who regularly filled in for the team each week and played to a high standard. Ben Grimes batted superbly many times and took some of the sharpest catches I have ever seen. TJ was always handy with the bat and even opened the batting for us early in the season. Josh was also very handy with both ball and bat and took 3 wickets in one game. Other memorable moments include Flynn hitting the winning runs against Lysterfield and also Aussie taking a wicket with the last ball of the semi final in his first bowling appearance of the season. Ultimately it was another successful year for the u16's side who managed to make finals. Unfortunately, we were eliminated at the first hurdle in the semi final but we are very confident that all of the boys have a good cricketing future ahead of them and hope to go a step further next season. We would also like to thank all of the parents for getting their boys to each game and particularly Bron who was a fantastic team manager who always kept the team and coaches organised and prepared each week. U14 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report

This season the U14’s added four new players to our Runners Up team from last season. We welcomed Tom Taylor and Dylan Goldberg and welcomed back Max Lamers and Lochy Beecroft. All four are talented cricketers and sportsman and we were excited about the year ahead. Although we snuck into 4th spot and played in a semi final, our season never really got going. In a two-day competition, we didn’t play a single two-day game until the semi. We had no less than eight Friday nights where we didn’t play or finish the night due to wash-outs, heat-outs, dark-outs and byes. This was disappointing to say the least, in that the boys just didn’t get to play enough cricket and many of them were starved of opportunities with bat or ball and it was a coaches nightmare to try and give them all a decent go. In the seven one-day games we did play, we played some great cricket. We won four games and lost three, two of these losses were by 1 run on the last ball of the match. We definitely matched it with the better teams. Lysterfield were the eventual premiers who we beat the first time we played them and then lost by one run on the last ball the other time we played them. We lost to Knox Gardens in the semi, mainly due to forgetting how to play two-day cricket. We bowled and fielded well as a team but lost early wickets with the bat and although we nearly batted out our overs we were never really in the game. Throughout the season I was proud of all of the boys in terms of their effort, attitude and sportsmanship, especially during our Friday night matches. This was also often commented on to me by umpires and opposition coaches and parents. This is something I am most pleased about. Of course we want to develop cricketers, have fun and have some success, but as a club and as a coach, most important is the way we play the game, the right way, the Monbulk way. Well done and thank you boys. One of the things we worked on this season was getting the most out of each training session eg. concentrating, putting in 100% and working on weaknesses etc. We did this well at times, but further improvement is needed in this area as a team to continue to improve. This group of kids are seriously talented and I look forward to their progress next season when we enter U16’s on a Saturday morning and play 50 over games. Lets hope the weather is kinder to us and I hope to see them all back next season. I also hope many of these boys play some senior cricket next season as some did this season. I also hope to play some senior games next season with these boys hopefully. Good luck to Rab, Max and Zac with their soccer and to the other nine boys with their footy with the U14 footy Hawks (back to back boys!!) Thanks to Kerrin for being a terrific scorer, MyCricket manager and team manager yet again. You do a great job and it’s much appreciated. It was great to have Rick Lamers back again this season who was an invaluable assistant at trainings and on match nights – thanks Rick and good luck with your recovery. Thanks also to the best set of parents for your support (and the food) and making Friday nights enjoyable. Looking forward to the eggs and bacon on Saturday mornings next season. Cheers Steve

Monbulk U12 Gold – 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report Another year of cricket came around very quick as the most of the Under 11’s from last year arrived for the first indoor training session, along with some new and enthusiastic faces. All the boys had shot up over the winter and were looking to bowl faster and hit the ball harder. The boys were allowed to continue in their teams from last year to continue building on the teamwork and chemistry that had been established. The year started off in great fashion for the Gold boys, with a great game against Belgrave as Jayden Spencer managed to post the highest score for the year with 36* off 20 balls. The difference in fielding awareness and the ability to bowl consistently on one side of the wickets was a clear improvement from the previous year. The boys continued to gain momentum against Johnson Park and Mountain Gate as we restricted both to scores of 39 and 54 respectively. Some class bowling was on display from Will Copelin, Tom Donald, Connor Scheid and Declan Howie, who all took 2 wickets bowling great lines and lengths. The boys were handed their only loss in the regular season in an incredibly exciting game against the Aura Vale Tigers with the game decided on the second last ball. I was proud of how the team all supported each other after the loss and how each player was determined to make sure they would learn from the game. Unfortunately, the summer of cricket was interrupted by some very consistent and unseasonal Friday rain as I left the boys to head overseas for most of the rain. I left the boys in the hands of my very capable Assistant Coach Tom Badgery, who has really shown great maturity and leadership in his involvement in trainings and matches. We managed to get two weeks of cricket in while I was away, with another strong win against Belgrave, with Isaac Hylton-Stewart making an exciting 29* and being well supported with the ball by Josh Davis and Alex McDonald both taking multiple wickets. After a long break over the school holidays the boys came back to cricket with a bit of rust, understandable by the many weeks of weather-affected games. A rematch with Aura Vale Tigers proved to be the strongest batting game for the year, with the team making a total of 3/168 off our 20 overs, with all batsmen making solid contributions. The last two rounds of the home and away season would determine if we were to make finals and the boys were desperate to reach that goal and a Wednesday night game against Upper Gully would be the best game of the year. With a score of 98 from our 20 overs it was going to be tough to defend. After a slow start with the ball, a flurry of wickets fell after some great bowling from Mason Drieberg and Jett Bolton with the boys supporting each other in the field with 4 run outs and 3 catches leaving Upper Gully all out for 95 and securing a finals place. We were lucky enough to be playing in a final in our first year of competitive cricket and it was great to have the senior club, families and Maroon players in attendance to watch our final against Upper Gully as we got off to a great start with 5 wickets falling early. We got off to a strong start with the bat but managed to lose quick wickets on the first day that left us a bit flat. Congratulations to Jamie Turpin who managed to go until the finals without losing his wicket and having an average of 74 for the year, but the highlights with the bat were Barnaby Smith-Major and Jai Farmer who both batted their 30 balls and retired to come back in and add to their original scores. Massive thanks to Tom Badgery and Steve McDonald for the assistance during the year. You were both crucial to the great year that we had and I hope that you are both willing volunteers for next year! To all the parents and the Monbulk Cricket Club, thank you for the opportunity to coach such a great group of young cricketers. Lastly, thanks to TJ Utting, Sage Farmer and Josh Spencer for your assistance at training. It is not expected for you to help as much as you do, but it is definitely appreciated and I’m glad to see that your involvement is helping develop the young guys and your own skills. Congratulations on an awesome season boys! I cannot say how impressive you all are with your cricketing skills, but also the teamwork and sportsmanship that you show week in, week out. I look forward to the next challenge for you all in Under 13’s next year. Duncan Maher

Monbulk U12 Maroon – 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report

Gee what a year! My first season as a 'real' coach was one of most challenging and yet satisfying experiences I have had in the 58 years I have been on this planet. Coaching a team of young boys who are super keen and extremely excited to play this great game makes you realise that cricket for these boys isn't just a game or a sport, it's a journey that can take them to wherever they want to go. The Maroons didn’t have a win this year as far as the score book shows but every single one of them that fronted up week in and week out putting their collective hands up to be captain, wanting to bowl first, wanting to bat first and surprisingly wanting to be keeper, are all winners. I can't express how proud and impressed I am to see where they have come from at the start of the season to where they are now. Everyone one of them has improved in their own unique way. I'm deliberately not going to mention any names, as the exceptional achievers will be honoured. This report is about the team. We came close at least 4 times to winning and with any luck could have gotten over the line in all 4.The 2 day game at Menzies Creek that was washed out when we were leading by 50 odd runs did hurt but to their credit they picked themselves up and showed up next week ready to have another crack. To miss a game one week because of the wet and cold conditions is bad enough but to then front up for the next game on home soil with the Sun beating down only to be told it was too hot to play well that was frustrating. My aim at the start of the year was naturally to teach the boys the basics and expand from there, they have done that and all of them whilst at varying degrees of skill are on their way if they apply themselves. The other goal was to make it a fun and interesting experience win lose or draw and hopefully that has happened and they will be back next year. Having said all that I am just as competitive as the next person so next season we work even harder than this year and the wins will come. Once again a great bunch of boys and parents to match. Thank you for all your support. Also to Duncan, Bernadette and Rodger (the best scorer in the hills!) and Paul for the Barbie-snags between the change of innings never tasted so good. See you in the summer. Geoff Field

Monbulk U11 – 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report

Well it’s hard to believe that a year of cricket has just flown by in a blink of an eye. It feels like only yesterday that we had our first training session of the year. I really enjoyed coaching this great group of kids this year, and seeing them improve each day. Along the way we had a lot of laughs, and everyone’s enthusiasm was at a high level, all throughout the year. This year we saw the first use of a real cricket ball and a full time wicketkeeper. The first few training sessions were all about getting used to the real cricket ball, after playing their first one or two seasons with a soft ball. All the boys got used to it very quickly and were ready to hit the season with a bang. The first half of the year didn’t start well, with the boys getting washed out one week, then heated out the week after. It was frustrating for Funky and myself, as well as the parents, and especially the boys, who wanted to play no matter what. The second half of the season was much better, with the kids playing the rest of the games for the year. There were many highlights throughout the season, with each player improving out of sight. Batting – being able to play proper cricket shots, rather than trying to smash every ball for 4 or 6. Wicket keeping – also a standout with not many of them ever doing it before. Bowling – was great all year and they started bowling outside off at a 4th stump line, rather than just bowling it anywhere on the pitch. But the thing that impressed Funk and I was the Fielding – they improved out of sight from game 1 with their backing up, runout, talking, encouraging and most importantly, catching. Everyone knows that “catches win matches!” We saw all these improved skills on show in their best game of the year. It was at our MCG. All the boys batted out of their skins, fielded faultlessly (which included about 3 runouts) and bowled perfectly. That game displayed what they had learnt throughout the season and they continued that form throughout the final games. There are lots of people to thank this year as it takes a lot to run a season of cricket. Firstly, to Matt Ryan, by far the best Team Manager at the club. His help throughout the season was fabulous and I can’t thank him enough. Matt’s texts every week telling us where we were playing were great, and he was always willing to help score or help whenever he could. Also a massive thanks to the parents who drove the boys to and from the games every Friday Night, and were also willing to help out as well. Finally, to Chris Defina, or as we call him “Funky!” Funky is the President of the club and has given up his time to help coach our team. You are a champion Funk and I couldn’t of done it without you! Last but not least, a massive thankyou to Moe, Camden, Gus, Josh, Matt D, Matt A, Jake, Oscar, Charlie, Todd, Logan, Tim, Will, Jacob and Harry (who played his first season of cricket) for being such good kids and I hope Funk and I get the privilege of coaching you again next season. Now it’s footy season, enjoy yourself over the winter and Funk and I can’t wait to see everyone back at the club again next season. Until then, Go Monny! Aaron Gillard and Chris Defina (Funky) Just a quick note from the Assistant Coach - Funky. I too would like to echo all of Azza's words and thank you messages to Matt Ryan, the players and all of the parents. Once again Azza has been exceptional this year in giving up his time to coach these boys. I can't coach this team without him due to work commitments. Azza is such a wonderful young man, I am a very lucky man that I get to coach all these boys and do it with someone like him. Thank you for all of your efforts Azza - You're a Champion!

Monbulk U10 Maroon – 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report

On behalf of Rohan and myself, we would firstly like to thank Steve for his support, Tara for all her help as Team Manager as well as all the other parents who helped out during the season. The under 10’s Maroon team had a great season. Unfortunately the weather was not overly kind to us and we missed a few games due to both heat and rain, however all players were extremely enthusiastic every week at training and on game day and were keen to play in all weather conditions! The improvement in each player throughout the season was remarkable. Our team fielding was outstanding with all players wanting to get involved and play as a team. All players batting and bowling skills improved each game day due to their hard work at training. We hope to see all the players continue their cricket with Monbulk Junior Cricket Club next season. Thank you for an enjoyable season. Well done Team! Duane Kay and Rohan Piesley

U10 Gold – 2015 / 2016 – Coach’s Report Although it was not my intention at the start of the season, I had the great pleasure of coaching the Under 10 Gold team this season. The boys were all super keen to play every week; rain or shine. Those pink all weather plastic balls made playing in the rain just as much fun as playing in the dry, although I’m not sure all the parents would agree here, especially those in charge of washing the whites! Under 10’s is all about leveraging natural enthusiasm and passion to play cricket, all the while learning the fundamentals of the game; bowling, batting, throwing & catching. As repetitive as hearing “Can I bowl first? Can I bat first?” was at times, it is this passion to play and participate that we must always encourage. Early in the season, the boys all played as individuals but after the Christmas break there was a much greater sense of ‘team’ and their performances as a result improved out of sight. Every boy improved their skills over the course of the season and, just as importantly, every boy developed a better understanding of what ‘The Spirit of Cricket’ really means. Many thanks to Jo McIntosh for her outstanding efforts as Team Manager. You did a great job of keeping all in order. Thanks also to all the parents for your terrific support at every game with scoring, fruit, putting out cones, packing up, etc. A little help by many makes it easier for all. I must also thank Duane & Rohan from the Under 10 Maroon team who helped out with training the boys on a Wednesday night. Thanks Guys! Well done boys on a successful season of cricket. Milo in2Cricket 2015 / 2016

Monbulk Milo has had another very successful season with 75 registered participants but also a bunch of pre Kinder kids joining in the program. Again we can be proud of our programs girl participation being a third of our kids. The program not only underpins the MCC juniors but the Friday night program is a community event providing the opportunity for kids to be active, enjoy the outdoors and for parents to socialise and relax at the end of the week. With 3 groups and the U10’s in the middle of the ground, Friday night showcases the MCC as a vibrant, welcoming club. The program only runs with the selfless support of our volunteers. In particularly our coaches: John Hughes, and Dave Daly. But also to all the parents who helped the coaches with groups. A special thankyou to Cathy Piesley who coordinate the cooking of the weekly BBQ and was there each week to help out and to make sure all went smoothly. Her contribution was invaluable. To all our parents who helped with the BBQ. Again it adds to our program to provide a meal on a Friday night. Also a big thanks to Jo Burton (BBQ) and Tracy Borkowski who helped with our weekly meat raffle. Thanks to Cliff Cleary and Al Smith for running the bar. It’s a huge commitment. And also to the MCC lads who filled in when asked. I like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors. Tim’s Pies and Bakery and Monbulk Family Butches. Thankyou for your support – it means a lot to our club. The feedback from parents, other teams has been extremely positive and I think as a club we can be proud of our standing within our community. Moving forward this can only be positive for our club. Thanks Damian Howard, Milo in2cricket co-ordinator
