College Leaders Induction Tuesday February 25th saw the college recognise the students who are willing to take on a Leadership role within our community. The assembly allowed us to acknowledge those students who are prepared to take on an additional responsibility to improve the life of students at the college. The number of students involved was terrific and showed the interest of the students to put in extra to their college. Thanks are extended to Ms Noone for her organisation and to the team of helpers on the day.

Swimming Carnivals Monday March 2nd saw the school relocate to Croydon Outdoor Pool for our annual swimming sports. It was an excellent day so thanks to all the parents who supported the day and to Steve Utting and his team for their organisation and to all the staff who ensured the day ran smoothly.

We had a large contingent of students who followed this up on Friday 6th March at the District Swimming. Well done to all the students who attended.

Coronavirus update The Department of Education and Training has issued advice to all schools to cancel all overseas trips unless they are to New Zealand or Canada until they advise otherwise. Advice is also that if your child has flu like symptoms then they should be kept home until they are well again and be tested for the virus if there are any concerns.

Japanese sister school visit - Cancelled Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus Japanese schools are able to travel to Australia and so our Japanese Sister School visit has had to be cancelled. The college appreciates the host families disappointment but hopefully you can remain in contact via email and the internet.

College Council AGM The Annual General meeting of Monbulk College Council will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday March 18th 2020. At this meeting the college will present it’s Annual Report. All parents are welcome to attend. Please let the office know if you wish to attend so that we can set up additional seating.

Twilight Open Evening Tuesday 24th March is the college’s Open Evening and a number of students have been asked to participate in activities in the rooms, as tour guides and as speakers. The evening runs from 6pm to 7.30pm and then moves to the theatre from 7.30pm to 8pm. Students involved in any of the activities will need to arrive prior to 6pm. All families are welcome to visit the college during this time.

Progress Reports will be available to parents at the end of this term and the Student Progress Conferences will occur on Thursday March 26th from 12.30 until 5pm (10 minute interviews) and from 6pm until 7.45pm (5 minute interviews). I would encourage all parents to come with their son/daughter and meet the teachers and discuss the progress made in Term 1. Bookings need to be made through Compass. Progress reports look different this year and parents should read the information about reports later in this newsletter.

College Council Elections At the close of nominations there were three parent nominations for three positions and one student nomination for the one position and two DET nominations for the two positions. I would therefore like to congratulate the following parents, student and DET employees on their election to College Council.

Parents Student DET Employees Melinda Riddell Archie Trundle Fran Ibbott Miles Menegon Kevin Osborne Rebecca Bos

Margaret Uren

STUDENT DROP OFF Parents are again reminded that student drop off and pick up at the start and end of the day is ONLY via the gym carpark. This is particularly important whilst we have fewer car parks at the front of the college.

Student Progress Conferences

Reports The first cycle of reports will be available Thursday 19th March.

The college has moved to continuous reporting . In addition to learning tasks students will be provided with more formalised feedback on their work habits. This will appear as a grade point average (GPA) and will provide the opportunity to track a more holistic view of your child as learner. The work habits that will be monitored are:

Organisation

Effort

Work Completed

Respectful Classroom Behaviour

The change is to reflect our values of Excellence, Effort and Respect. We feel the bigger classroom picture is important, focusing on the preconditions for learning and habits that set students up for success.

By attending to work habits frequently it will help address any areas that may be disabling students in their learning and we hope that our parent community will support these habits at home also.

Organisation

Arrives to class on time Prepared for class – brings required materials Demonstrates time management Submits work on time

Effort
