.About Newton
Mcl illan
Cbituary written by EeVo John Quincy Smith
He was. born in Pennsylvania of Scotch-Welch parentage. He caine to
.. /Ohio with his parents
when
about U j ears of age. The opportunities
.
for
education in the wilderness were meager,
yet
through using every
opportunity and meditative thought he became a
veiy^
intelligent man,
fond of reading poetry
and history in
the making.
He
had the habit
: about-important matters
unti l
he reached a conclusion
that
was
satisfactory
to his
own
mind.
His
one
object
seemed
to be
,
to
know what
is trjith . In the e ffo rt to find
truth he became a
clear
and
logical
thinker. He always listened in the kindest
man
-
ner to the
arguments
of those who disagree with him but would defend
his
own opinions with strong and
forcible
reasons. He^ submitted
. every
question
to the intelligent judgment
of
his own tni.nd. This
. .was
so in religion, in
morals and in
pol i t ics . Originally
a Whig,
. / : he was an intense opponent of slavery, and on the
organization
of
-
the
.Liberty
party
became one
of i t s
most
ardent
advocates.
Later
, . becoming an ardent Republican* Salmon P, Chase seems to have been
.
his
beau
ideal of
a statesman
and General
U,. S., Grant, of a
.'^soldier; evidenced by his naming his youngest son, Chase Grant,
/ .;.:> But he was never the unquestioning, supporter of any party. After
-the Republican party
had
restored the
Union
and
emancipated the slaves
he thought i t had accomplished i ts purpose and turning to what he
considered the next greatest evil he
bec^e
an
ardent
Prohibition-
i s t in
his old age as he had
been
an anti- Slavery
man
in his prime.
In political disputes he was kindly and courteous. His condannation
w of
wrong and evils, not
of men
or parties. He was
greatly al
flicted
with rheumatism
for
mapy
years,
and for the last nine months
he was
blind
and
helpless requiring
constant and
careful
attendance.
He bore
his
long suffering with the courage and patience of a Chris
tian,
Ho
petulant word escaped
his lips,
Rven these last
months
. he has been eager to hear about events
in
the county
and
the
stir
ring events of the world, asking
his
daughter to read to
him

A BIT OF
ANCIENT
HISTOHY OF TI^ NORDYKE FAMILY
Dad
and
Mother, my sister Alda (Almeda)
and
brother
Milton
came
to
California in l89li. They lived in Los Angeles for a few years, then moved
onto a
lemon
ordhard
in
East
Bhittier,
where
Dad's Uncle
Jonathan Bailey
was
one
of the founders of Whittier. In
1906 ad was
offered a position as
overseer of a large ranch in
Owens
Valley
in Inyo
County, about
250
miles
north of TWiittier. He and Milton had a
freight
car
all
loaded in Los Angeles
with a team of horses, a
cow,
a couple of
pigs,
and a
crate
of chickens
Also, our household furniture and
farm
tools, such as there
were
in those
days Oh,
yes,
and
ay collie dog,
Jean The only
way
into
Owens Valley
by
train at
that
time was from Los Angeles via of Oakland, across the High
Sierras
t
Heno, Nevada, and down to Mina, a then flourishing mining town
There
they
were
transferred to the
narrow gauge
the
Slim
Princess
and
on
down
into Owens Valley The morning they were to leave Los Angeles,
word came of the great San Francisco earthquake, April 18,
1906,
and
all
trains
were
tied
up t i l l the next morning However, they were fortunate
to
be on the tracks just ahead of an
Orange
Special
that
was
commandeered
for
Oakland for the refugees. Thus they, because of the l ivestock on board,
left early the next morning and went
through
in express time
Even
so, the
trip
took
two
nights
and
three
days
to
end
up
only
250
miles
from
Los
Angeles.
One
week later.
Mother and Alda and I left
ty
the same route for our
new
home
At that timq^ the only other way into the Valley
was
by stagecoach through
the mountains
and
across th e desert, which took
just as
long
The ranch
some
2000 acres was located about
six
miles south of
the
County
seat.
Independence Hay and
grain
and some
fruits
were
the
main
crops
Mary head of beef cattle and bands f sheep were often fed during
the
snowy
winters
on
the ranch These herds came
from fanges when
feed
was
scarce Dad operated two teams to the mining towns on the desert, hauling
hay, grain
and
other supplies into the mines
and
returning with gold, sil*
ver,
copper and lead
bullion
back
to the
narrow gauge which ended
at
Keller
Dad
drove 6 or 8 horses, and
his
teamster and
swamper ,
as the helper
was
called, handled 12 or
lU
horses, according to the loads
It
was
during these years that
most
of the
2000
acres
were
subdivided
and the l i t t le community
town
of
Maiaanar
was
born Manzanar from
the
Spanish mansanita, meaning apple In 1915 we moved to Bishop, as I was
saadip
for
High
School and
that
was
the only
high school in
the
Valley
at
that time There my
father studied for the State examination for Horti
cultural Commiasioner for
the
County He
passed with
flying
colors and
served in
that
capacity for
six or more
years During
that
time, because
of his position, he
was
appointed
Food
Administrator for the County
by
res iden t erber t Hoover
After graduating
from High
School in 1919, my grandfather (Mother's
father - Francis Farquhar)
came
out from Ohio for a visi t and took me back
to
Wilmington
for about a throe
months visit
with the Farquhar families.
While there I met many cousins that my folks had often spoken of Now,
with the
McMillan
history
I
can
relate
to
many
of
them
y 1925 the
Los
Angeles Aqueduct was coiapleteJ,
and
almost
all
the
water was being diverted t
Los
Angeles Many smaller ranches were being
forced
to se l l a t
ridiculously low
prices. That
is a
long
and
sad
story
in
i tself) . Mary families left Owens Valley and quite a few along with
Mother and Dad came
to
Lake
County
and set t led
in and around
Lakeport.
