Environmentally friendly and cost savingEnergy contributes significantly to the production costs for label printing. Increasing global energy consumption and rising energy prices challenge us to provide intelligent solutions to stabilize production costs – or even better, to reduce them. It is becoming increasingly clear that the production methods which aim at conserving resources are the ones which pay in the end. IST METZ has responded to this challenge by introducing the newly developed MBS®-6 UV system with its economical use of energy.

e³ = energy efficient equipmentAll the systems developed by IST are optimized for the best possible utilization of energy. The aim is to significantly improve the energy efficiency of each new generation of product in comparison to its predecessor. The implementation of particularly energy-efficient equip-ment is documented by the label e³.

EFFICIENTMBS®-6 improves your energy balance

Significant increase in efficiencyThanks to the completely new URS® Duo Reflector Geometry the MBS®-6 sets new standards. The combined use of special URS® and URS®-A reflectors results in just one lamp output of 120 W/cm being required to achieve the same curing results as those achieved from lamp power up to 200 W/cm. The energy saved has a direct influence on electricity bills, as the following example shows:

Basis for calculation: 8 printing units, lamp length 450 mm, production hours/year (2-shift operation) 3,000 h, price of electricity: 0.12 €/kWh (average electricity price for industrial customers)

The brand new MBS®-6 UV system is based on innovative thinking: URS® Duo Reflector Technology, ELC® Electronic Power Supply Device and FLC® Fast Lamp Change allow for a significant reduction in operating costs and thus less expensive production while still maintaining the same high quality and productivity – and all that with comparably low investment costs.

For special purposes as in the area of food packaging, there’s a version of MBS®-6 with inertisation available. More than 20 years of know-how in this area guarantee a perfect integration of our systems. The specifically designed inert gas concept allows very low consumption.

URS® Duo Reflector TechnologyURS® reflectors are what are known as cold mirror reflectors with more than 60 different layers of metal oxide. These highly resistant reflectors boast an extremely long service life and optimum heat management. The URS® Duo Technology boasts a significantly higher level of reflection than traditional reflectors; the IR radiation is conveyed directly towards the air-cooled aluminium profile via a special coating.

Rotary ReflectorIn standby mode the reflector slides in front of the lamp and shuts off the rays to the web completely. Due to its design and very compact form, the UV curing unit can be integrated into the press without any problem and the curing units remain easily accessible for maintenance purposes.

It is not only energy-saving production which provides cost advantages but also a more efficient use of the machine. Bearing this in mind the MBS®-6 UV system has been designed to reduce machine downtimes. Whether it is the replacement of the UV lamp or the cleaning of the unit, all service work can be carried out quickly and easily. And “time is money”!

Design and handlingThe modern and unique design of the MBS®-6 also sets new standards in handling. All relevant components of the UV curing unit can be accessed without touching a single screw.

FLC® Fast Lamp ChangeThe wire-less FLC® UV lamp system enables lamps to be changed quickly and easily. It is possible to remove the UV lamp from the lamp unit in just one turn of the hand, thus a lamp replacement just takes a few seconds and that means several hours of additional machine availability per year.

Quick-change cassetteThe MBS®-6 unit can simply be inserted into the machine; all supply connections couple automatically.For the purpose of maintenance work the inner housing is removed from the outer housing without touching a single screw and all components in the unit can be easily accessed. Maintenance times are maximum reduced.

Heat managementThe reduced lamp power output of 120 W/cm makes it possible to optimise the amount of exhaust air and cooling air flow to the UV unit. This reduces contamination of the lamp and reflector and thus keeps machine downtimes for cleaning to a minimum. In order to keep the temperature load on the web at a low level, it can be led over a water-cooled cylinder.

UV measurementMBS®-6 UV-units are prepared for UV measurement as standard. With the portable UMS-2 UV measurement device, output can be monitored easily and machine downtimes avoided.

URS® Duo Reflector GeometryUsing state-of-the-art ray-tracing software the reflector geometry has been completely redesigned and optimized for the label printing production process – with the same lamp output, UV irradiation on the substrate increases.

ELC® Electronic Power Supply DeviceMBS®-6 UV systems are fitted with state-of-the-art electronics, including electronic power supply devices of type ELC® as standard. The intelligent and coordinated electronics offer further potential for saving energy. The ELC® appliances allow a smooth step-less dimming of the UV lamp. And the clever, compact ELC® stacking concept allows space requirements to be reduced by half without compromising on easy accessibility to the appliances.

Energy-minimized UV printingThere are two significant factors involved in increasing efficiency: the use of optimised components and their perfect combination. All the key components of the MBS®-6, such as the reflectors, lamps and electronic components are developed and manufactured in our company. We use ray-tracing technology to optimise the UV output and IR radiation of our systems according to the requirements of the individual application.

Thanks to the high efficiency and low output in standby mode, energy consumption is noticeably reduced – a further contribution to saving on operating costs. Furthermore the amount of exhaust air is reduced, leading to further significant cost savings in an air-conditioned environment. The new MBS®-6 UV unit offers users extraordinary energy saving potential without compromising on quality or production speed.

The MBS®-6 has been graded as particularly energy-efficient by the German Professional Association for Printing and Paper Processing and therefore bears the label “energy-minimized UV printing”. Furthermore, as a world-first in its class, the MBS®-6 has received the “DGUV Test” signet (formerly GS signet). The signet is a valid and legally regulated test symbol for product safety which is recognised across Europe.
