A fine day to open the fields Athletes are already out on the turfThe first Monday in February brought unusually warm temps and blue skies – the perfect backdrop for the first practice on the recently completed turf athletic fields.

The Lakers Men’s Lacrosse Team was the first to break in the new field with a late-afternoon practice, and the honor was lost on no one: Athletic Director Bob Lowden and Assistant Director Sam Boccacino left their offices to watch from the sidelines and players posed for a celebratory photo with head coach Dave Stein before breaking into warmups.

“I could stand here forever,” said a contented Lowden as he surveyed the players running on the bright green turf. “I still can’t believe it’s here.”

Spirits were just as high a few hours later when Lakers baseball and softball players used their fields for the first time. Lowden was waiting at the baseball field and asked that he be allowed to swing at the first pitches. Head coach Sean Marren happily obliged — after all, Lowden holds the honor of having claimed two regional championships as the Lakers head coach, in 1992 and 1994, and has been the driving force behind the turf project, which he envisioned 15 years ago.

A fine day to open the fields (Continued from page 2)

Contractors put the finishing touches on the bleachers and press box earlier this winter. The project was largely complete by December, seven months after a groundbreaking ceremony attended by students, faculty, staff, local dignitaries and community members. The project received final approval from the Ontario County Board of Supervisors in April 2018.

The $5.95 million project includes a multipurpose field for lacrosse, soccer and baseball and a separate softball field. Funding included $250,000 in private donations initiated by an anonymous supporter’s pledge to match all gifts, up to a total of $125,000.

The fields were long envisioned by Lowden and his coaches. Spring athletic teams saw little practice and sometimes no playing time on the grass fields because of snow, mud and water. The men’s lacrosse team has endured entire seasons without a single home game, said head coach Dave Stein.

The new fields allow for expanded seasons and an expanded athletics roster: The college has approved the addition of a women’s lacrosse team, starting in the spring of 2020. Lighting will enable FLCC to host high school and college tournaments that run past sunset for the first time. Such events will provide a return on investment for the community by bringing in visitors and offering more opportunity for the local sports community.

The fields are also a draw for prospective student athletes, many of whom come from high schools that already have turf fields. “This is going to help a lot in our student athlete recruiting efforts,” said Stein. “And, it’s the little things, like not having to chase down balls in the woods after practice because we have a fence.”

Scoreboard dedication

The scoreboard over the new baseball and multipurpose turf field bears the name of one of the most highly regarded athletes in the college’s 51-year history. Jeffrey “Lefty” Stahl ’94 pitched for the Lakers Men’s Baseball Team when it claimed the National Junior College Athletic Association Region III Championship in 1992 and 1994 under the direction of head coach Bob Lowden.

“I attribute much of our success to his ability to bring the team together,” said Lowden, now the athletic director.

Stahl, who went on to serve in the U.S. Army, lost a 16-year battle with brain cancer on Aug. 26, 2017 at age 45.

The sign will be dedicated in Stahl’s memory at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, before the first pitch of a Lakers home game against Jefferson Community College. Baseball alumni and former classmates and friends of Stahl are encouraged to attend. For more information, call (585) 785-1459.

For the love of FLCC: Vintners & Valentines a showing of generosityThe fourth annual Vintners and Valentines dinner drew more than 200 college supporters and raised nearly $50,000 to support the viticulture and wine technology degree program and hospitality programs.

The Feb. 8 event was held in the main campus Student Center and featured Finger Lakes wines and the people who make them, a five-course meal prepared by the college’s culinary arts students, a wine pull, and live and silent auctions.

Twenty-seven Finger Lakes wineries participated, pairing wines with the meal, and providing a winemaker for each table.

The six live auction items were an F.L.X. Table premiere tasting experience with master sommelier Christopher Bates; a two-person “Flex-4 pack” to the 2019 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club with a round of golf at Oak Hill East Course with President Robert Nye and retired Sen. Michael Nozzolio; four CMAC VIP box seats for a summer 2019 concert; a weekend stay at a Lake Ontario cottage; a one-night stay with dinner for two

at Glenora Wine Cellars; and an hour of flying over the Finger Lakes in the private aircraft of pilot and FLCC Foundation board member Kevin Flynn ’79.

Vintners and Valentines was coordinated by a committee that included Margaret Lorenzetti ’82, Jamie Rotter, Gina Lee ’13, Paul Brock and community members Eric Frarey ’84, Sara Britting, Ann Martini, Tim Benedict ’76, John Berndt, Amy Calabrese, Sarah Genecco ’07 and Lenore Friend. Several other alumni helped out, including Lorrie Childs ’03, adjunct music faculty member and guitarist Craig Snyder ’84 and Denise Cooper ’18.

Get your copy of FLCC’s history book A limited number of copies of a commemorative book chronicling the history of FLCC are still available. Released on the College’s golden anniversary on Feb. 1, 2018, the book is titled “This Bold Decision: The Story of Finger Lakes Community College” – a reference to the Ontario County Board of Supervisors’ decision to create the college from the inauguration speech of the college’s first president, Roy Satre.

More than 750 faculty, staff, students, trustees and county officials are mentioned, quoted or shown in the 300 plus photos. Among those featured is Kathy Trautman, who was first in line to sign up for classes. As a working mother, she took classes on and off until she had enough credits to get her degree in 1990. Trautman now lives in Georgia.

The 124-page book was written and designed by FLCC Community Affairs staff Sarah Butler of Canandaigua, Lenore Friend of South Bristol and Jessica Youngman of Newark.

FLCC was established during the community college movement of the mid-20th century as the space race and social change prompted demand for expanded higher education options. As the authors note in the book’s acknowledgments, “Stories of pioneers in this American experiment played out in towns and cities across the country. ‘This Bold Decision’ is a retelling of some of those stories with an intentional emphasis on the college’s early years and our own pioneers’ reflections.”

For more information about the book, contact the Community Affairs Office at (585) 785-1623. To purchase online, visit give.flcc.edu/pages/50th-anniversary-this-bold-decision-book-sales.

Concerts to celebrate life of Dr. A. John Walker

The Finger Lakes Chorale will perform two concerts in memory of the late Dr. A. John Walker, professor emeritus, who died in August 2018. The concerts are scheduled for May 4 at 7:30 p.m. and May 5 at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 10 South Ave., Bloomfield. They are free; donations will be accepted for student scholarships. For more information, call (585) 396-0027.

Dr. Walker led the Lincoln Hill Singers and directed the Finger Lakes Chorale for 30 years. He was instrumental in developing CCFL’s music program after joining the college in 1973, two years before the main campus was built. “Former students and community members remember John as a gifted teacher and conductor who set high standards, yet was able to make the most difficult musical concepts accessible,” said Suzanne Washburn ’82. “He was known for the rigor of his music theory classes and for his attention to detail and musicality in preparing a performance.”

Remembered in songFriends and colleagues of the late Robert “Bob” Barbuto held a concert in October to celebrate the life of a teacher and jazz musician – a man so humble that many were unaware of his early days working with stars such as Pat Benatar and Tony Bennett and the bands Blondie, the Four Tops, and the Temptations.

Barbuto, who died on June 30 at age 74, taught at several local school districts, FLCC and Hobart and William Smith Colleges following an extensive career as a composer and musician.

“He was a world-class musician without an ego. He never said anything bad about anybody or complained about a student,” said Maria Gillard, a member of the FLCC music faculty who emceed the event.

The concert featured live performances of Barbuto’s work, two recordings by Barbuto, and one piece, titled “Briggy,” in which colleague Dave Arenius and FLCC student Greg Broadhurst played to a piano track Barbuto recorded about 10 years ago. Robert Potter ’85, music recording studio manager at FLCC, isolated the piano track from Barbuto’s performance of “Briggy” at the Birdland jazz club in Manhattan in 2007. “Briggy” is a tribute to baritone saxophonist Nick Brignola, who took an interest in Barbuto when he was a teenage musician playing on an Albany TV show in the 1950s.

Tour pit stop: FLCC recording studiosMichael Pinales at the House of Guitars in Rochester had a quick answer for Bobby Ingram, lead guitarist for southern rock band Molly Hatchet, who was searching late last summer for a place to lay tracks for a new album.

Pinales gave Ingram the number for his former professor, Jon Belec, who taught music recording at FLCC.

Within days, the band was sharing lunch with FLCC students and alumni as Jon, who has been a recording engineer for Kanye West, Jennifer Lopez and others, got the studio ready for a marathon session. House of Guitars, again, helped out by providing some equipment. Ingram specifically wanted a large studio with a Solid State Logic console and an engineer who knows how to record “old school.”

“We want to show you guys how we record old school,” Ingram said over subs in a classroom across from the studio. “We’re going to do some stacking, some tracking and have a lot of fun.”

The FLCC guests, including Emily Martens, a 2017 FLCC grad who manages the auditorium at Baldwinsville High School, and Nate Clark ’15, now a live sound engineer for Spice of Life Productions, asked about the changes since Molly Hatchet got started in the 70s, making timeless hits like “Flirtin’ with Disaster.” The band has toured the world and played in East Berlin just after the Wall fell.

“We took it all in stride. We love what we do,” Ingram said.

Athletics roster grows by two teams

The FLCC Board of Trustees has voted to approve the addition of two athletic teams to the college’s roster – one, a result of the addition of turf athletic fields, the other in response to growing interest in online gaming. Women’s lacrosse and an esports Overwatch team will begin in the fall of 2019.

The addition of space with the new turf fields (see cover story) enabled the return of the previously discontinued women’s lacrosse, which continues to grow in popularity among high school athletes.

“In recent years, girls lacrosse at the high school level has surged in popularity. Today, there are more students interested in playing and a larger pool of good coaches,” said Bob Lowden, FLCC athletic director.

Unlike lacrosse, the varsity esports team won’t need field space. The coed team of 10 to 15 players will compete in tournaments using the game programming and design lab.

Varsity collegiate esports started about five years ago when a scholarship-sponsored League of Legends team was announced at Robert Morris University in Illinois. In the years since, more than 125 programs have been added under the umbrella of a national governing body, the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE).

FLCC is the first to offer a varsity esport team in Region III of the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association. The Overwatch team is complementary to a variety of academic programs, including video game programming and design and new media and, two programs to be launched in the fall of 2019: networking and cybersecurity and web and mobile development.

The impact of investing in FLCC Each academic year, donors help support student success. Throughout this publication, we highlight four of the over 100 recipients of scholarships at FLCC for the 2018-19 academic year. Young Alumni Spotlight Liza Bobseine ’02Liza Bobseine ’02 embarked on a 10-day trip to South Africa to train local rangers in wildlife crime scene investigation to further their efforts in saving elephants and rhinos from illegal poaching.

Liza, a lieutenant with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, volunteered as part of a five-member team to teach the course she organized with her DEC partner, Capt. Jesse Paluch.

The course included instruction on crime scene sketching and photography, DNA and fingerprint collection, wildlife poisoning and firearm ballistics. The Wild Tomorrow Fund supported the team with coordination and funding that helped purchase four new forensics kits for the South African rangers’ use.

“The best part of this has been connecting with the individual rangers from Swaziland, Mozambique, and South Africa and sharing our experiences and knowledge in both directions,” Liza said. “It is also amazing to be here with the ecologists from the Wild Tomorrow Fund and having the opportunity to see and learn about their plants and animals here.”

Liza currently lives in Claverack, Columbia County. She was honored with Governor Cuomo’s Certificate of Exceptional Valor in 2017, the same year she received FLCC’s Outstanding Conservation Alumni Achievement Award.

In 2011, she was named Officer of the Year by the state Rifle and Pistol Association for her role in hunting education and ensuring safe firearms use. She has also been credited with saving the

lives of two people: a 66-year-old woman who had stopped breathing in her parked car, and Liza’s partner, who’d been shot while the two were investigating a complaint of illegal deer hunting. The latter happened in 2016 and earned Liza a New York State Liberty Medal.

At FLCC, Liza pursued environmental studies and conservation law and was captain of the logging sports team. She went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry and worked as a forester for Cornell University before becoming an environmental conservation officer in 2007.

“Liza came to FLCC with the career goal of becoming an environmental conservation officer,” said John Van Niel ’83, professor of environmental conservation. “She was always a curious and highly motivated student. I have been able to watch her progress in her career with great pride and am not surprised she is now able to have an impact on wildlife protection on an international scale.”

“My goal is to graduate from Buffalo State and earn my accounting degree. The financial assistance you

provided will help relieve the financial stress of college this year. Thank you

for your generosity and support. I promise you I will work hard as ever and give back to the community when

the time comes. I hope to help students both academically and

financially the way you’ve helped me.”

Young Alumni Spotlight Ashley Pridmore ’05Alumna Ashley Pridmore ’05 was featured in the August/September edition of Garden & Gun magazine for her recent successes, including a public art installation and solo gallery exhibit in New Orleans.

The article delves into Ashley’s evolution from a family of seven children growing in Naples without a television but with craft projects, music lessons, fort building and endless amazement with the world outside. “I wanted to be, and was, an artist before I could even verbalize the thought,” she told the writer.

Ashley, a 2002 Naples graduate, is a mixed media artist whose focus is on the natural world and the cycle of life and death. After earning her associate degree from FLCC, Ashley earned a bachelor of fine arts in sculpture and extended media from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2007.

An 8-foot tall bronze “sea beast” she created, titled “Saint Kampos,” was installed in New Orleans last spring.

Last October, her second solo show in the U.S., titled “Into the Thicket,” opened at the Soren Christensen Gallery in New Orleans. Other solo exhibitions include “Animal, Vegetable, Mineral” at the Redbud Gallery in Houston, Texas, in 2014, and “By Land or By Sea” in a 15th century deconsecrated Franciscan cathedral called the Monchskirche Museum in Salzwedel, Germany, in 2016. She was an artist in residence at the Molzberger Academy in Hilmsen, Germany, in 2014.

Ashley is currently working on a large-scale, site-specific installation made of oyster shells for a sculpture garden in St. Rose, Louisiana, to open in May.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT: FLCC Forward In 2018, the FLCC Board of Trustees adopted a new five-year strategic plan, FLCC Forward, to respond to changes in society and the economy in ways that promote student success. In early 2019, the college announced internal grants to fund innovative projects to improve retention, reach the underserved and foster community engagement. In addition, the college has appointed stewards to oversee progress on the plan’s six objectives through operations and the annual budget.

Some exciting projects are already underway: Using technology to improve the student experience, FLCC introduced mixed reality into an anatomy and physiology class in fall 2018. Students wear special visors to view three-dimensional models of the human body. The instructor leads students through a model of an organ or system and can show how they interconnect. An early analysis of fall 2018 outcomes shows greater student success among those in the class using the visors.

To learn more about the FLCC strategic plan, visit flcc.edu/forward

“I would like to express my sincere appreciation for this opportunity and for

your generosity. I plan to transfer to Brockport to pursue a career as a social

worker. With my time remaining at FLCC, I will continue volunteering and helping the community as best I can. Through

your generous support, it will be possible for me to continue to achieve my

educational and career goals. I hope one day I will be able to help other students achieve

their goals in life just as you helped me.”

Laura, who used to work in the brewery’s tasting room on Routes 5 and 20 and now works at FLCC’s One Stop Center, is credited with naming the beer.

Music/Music Recording Technology While attending FLCC, Matt Battle ’13 was looking for a bassist to play with when he met Kamara Robideau ’13, a guitar student looking to play bass in a band. They created a demo for what later became the single “Little Lost.” In 2017, Matt and Kamara moved to Los Angeles, where they work in media and do various session work. Along with singer-songwriter Cammy Enaharo, the three founded Gold Koa, an indie-pop band. Together they developed “Little Lost,” which was released as a single in January 2018. Delaware State Fair. She was selected for this honor based on her volunteer work at Brandywine Zoo. Her projects include the Delaware Kestrel Partnership, in which she monitored five nest boxes through the breeding season, attended a kestrel banding, and monitored a hack box used to release five kestrels that were born in captivity. She also assisted with an urban wildlife monitoring project. Using the protocol developed by the Lincoln Park Zoo, she helped set up trail cameras along a corridor once each season to determine the type of wildlife present. In addition, she often helps with the Traveling Zoo to give presentations to schools, community organizations, and the A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital.

He and his wife have re-settled to mid-coast Maine with their three dogs and five cats. They will continue to raise sheep and chickens and hope to grow most of their own food.

“With this scholarship, I am able to focus on school without the worry of how to come up with the money for tuition, and for that I am

extremely grateful. With the extra money I am also able to take voice lessons again

at FLCC. After this year at FLCC, I plan to transfer to a four-year school where I will be studying musical theatre and the performing

arts. I think all students should be able to learn without having to worry about whether

or not they will be able to pay for their tuition. Thank you again so much for this opportunity

to further expand my learning.”

Anyone wondering what FLCC’s guiding values are need only visit the George M. Ewing Sr. Atrium at the main campus. A large-scale installation that was put up in time for the start of fall courses features four fabric banners — one for each value: vitality, inquiry, perseverance and interconnectedness. Alongside them are 11-foot metal signs containing word clouds that correspond with each value.

The four values date back to 2015 and serve as the College’s institutional learning outcomes. They serve as measurement tools for determining student growth and development, and they are at the center of FLCC's Learning Framework.

To learn more about the college’s values, visit flcc.edu/academics/framework.

Shown under the banners are members of the FLCC Board of Trustees, from left to right: Stephen Martin, Santa Abraham, Donald Cass, Barbara Hamlin, Richard Russell, Alice Avila (student representative), George Cushman, M. Joan Geise, Geoffrey Astles, and Donna Mihalik ’15.
