Welcome to CUMBA

The recent financial turmoil and the rise of emerging economies have

revealed two key global trends: the growing importance of Asia, China

in particular, in the global arena; and the instrumental role of corporate

social responsibility (CSR) for sustainable development. Steeped in the

unprecedented economic development of China and Asia while engaging

in teaching and research partnership globally, the Faculty of Business

Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong provides an excellent

platform to equip global business leaders for the challenges ahead.

Being the first MBA program in Hong Kong and one of the first two business

schools outside North America to be accredited by AACSB International,

our MBA programme has a strong global focus. Over the years, we have

successfully placed students in multinational corporations such as Credit

Suisse, IBM, LVMH and Mizuho Corporate Bank. More than 80% of our full-

time students come from outside of Hong Kong. Our dual degree offerings

with University of Texas, Austin and HEC, Paris and extensive exchange

opportunities with top business schools around the world further enhance

students’ international experience.

With our strong focus on China and deep roots in the region, the MBA

curriculum offers unique opportunities to gain China business insight through

specialized courses in China marketing and finance, as well as study trips to

the mainland. Students will also benefit from our extensive network of more

than 17,000 alumni around the world. Our partnership programmes with top

mainland universities such as Tsinghua University, which cover all the four

key regions in China (Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Guangzhou/Shenzhen),

also provide our students with unparalleled opportunities to network with

top executives in China.

The volatile situation of the world economy since last year reinforces our

belief that socially responsible business leaders are the key to sustainable

development and business success. Every year, our MBA students will run a

student-led Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Conference. The event aims

to advocate the importance of CSR, tackle major obstacles and share good

CSR practices among corporations, NGOs and the academic community.

Through this major event and other CSR-driven initiatives, we devoted to

develop among our students a good sense of corporate citizenship, which in

turn, integrated into the corporations that they serve.

Business is all about leadership, innovation and achievements. We demonstrate

the essence of these through continuous advancement of the MBA programmes.

I sincerely invite you to join us and enjoy this extraordinary and rewarding

venture.

BusinessPlanCompetitions

Business plan competitions provide an excellent opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives; enhance presentation

as well as communication skills. And most importantly, put what they have learned into practice.

L‘Oréal e-Strat Challenge episode 8

Two of our CUMBA teams had won the L’Oréal e-Strat

Challenge Episode 8 in Hong Kong. This challenge

is the world’s biggest online business simulation

for undergraduates and MBA students. In its

first seven editions, the L’Oréal EStrat had brought

together over 221,000 students from 2,200 schools,

representing 128 countries.

Innovation Challenge 2008,Darden

A group of elite CUMBA students have eclipsed

over 96% of their competitors to achieve the title of

Top-10 Most Innovative MBA Teams of the “Innovation

challenge 2008” – a global business plan competition.

NUS Cerebration 2009 Business Plan Competition

A team of 4 CUMBA students has participated in the

NUS Cerebration 2009 Business Plan Competition and

were invited to present their business plan in Singapore.

Business Practicum Projects

Business Practicum Projects provide an opportunity for full-time

MBA students to apply what they have learned in the classroom

to solve real-world business problems. Students with different

nationalities and background are encouraged to form teams to

undertake business consulting projects under the supervision of

a full-time faculty member.

In 2008, our students were invited to work on strategic projects

from firms from retail and major investment banks to technology

start-ups. Projects covered issues such as market entry strategies

and brand positioning research.

Overseas Business Plan Competitions

Joining Business Plan Competitions is an excellent way to polish

your business skills and to hone your entrepreneurship spirit.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong strongly encourages

MBA students to form cross disciplinary teams, with different

nationalities and different backgrounds to participate in various

competitions. In 2008, we have sent teams to join competitions

in San Francisco, Oregon, Moot Corp in Texas, USA, Asian Moot

Corp in Thailand, Innovation challenge 2008 in Darden and NUS

Cerebration 2009 Business Plan Competition.

This meaningful and totally student organized event has now become a tradition since its first launch

in 2007. The Conference, with the dual aims of promoting corporate social responsibility to local

corporations as well as preparing the MBA students to become socially responsible business leaders,

has met with great responses each year.

For the third year in a row, the CUMBA CSR Conference 2009 was held at The Hong Kong Convention

& Exhibition Cener in May. It was organized by full-time and part-time MBA students working hand-

in-hand together. This year's conference, titled "Creating Sustainable Impact - CSR as a Competitive

Edge", featured Sir Robert Swan, a world-renowned polar explorer as its keynote speaker. His insights

and inspirational words for this new generation of business leaders were continuously applauded by

the audience. The event has attracted good attendance of corporate executives and the public alike.

"I am pleased to share about my internship now in Bonn. It is a small city and I stay at a hotel about 40 mins walk from the Post Tower. This “walking” time which I usually do in the morning and evening does help me in getting some exercise I really needed! There are around 20 interns here in Bonn with mixed nationalities. They include Uruguayan, Peruvian, French-Spanish, Indians, Chinese, Russian and Americans. Life here is good and I am enjoying it! The MBA networking event was good and interactive too. On the first day I went to the office, I was in a department meeting for the quarterly Freight Sales briefing. Though it was difficult to digest all the things on that day, I was able to gather some useful pointers and information about what was happening in Freight Sales! I was also introduced to all the people in different departments including my mentor and project manager."

Evonne Qin The Walt Disney Company (Shanghai) Limited in Shanghai, China

"One month has quickly passed since I became an MBA intern working in the Consumer Product Department (DCP) of The Walt Disney Company (Shanghai) Limited. Disney is a very warm big family, with 300 employees working together at Shanghai office. I enjoy life here every day. I am working for both the Finance Director and the Marketing Director, to help Disney DCP formulate more precise and viable marketing strategies by conducting a wide range of economic and industry analysis. Disney gives me good opportunity to learn how licensing business works, which is quite different from most consumer goods companies operating here in China."

The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the

first university in Hong Kong to offer joint MBA

programmes with a Mainland institution. We started

our MBA in Finance with Tsinghua University in

Beijing back in 2000.

Since then, this flagship programme has nurtured

over 600 business executives in the Mainland with

many of whom holding key positions in the financial

service industry in China.

In 2004, the Faculty of Business Administration of

CUHK forged a strategic partnership with the Shanghai

National Accounting Institute to provide world class

accounting and finance education in the greater

China region and provide opportunities for local and

Mainland accounting and finance professionals to

learn and grow. Upon completion of the programme,

participants are awarded both a Master of Accountancy

degree by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a

CFO Professional Certificate by the Shanghai National

Accounting Institute. As the only programme outside

of Mainland China offering the CFO professional

certificate, our graduates enjoy a competitive advantage

no other local institute can deliver.

Courses

Medium of Instruction

All MBA courses are taught in English.

Methods of Instruction

Individual faculty members have primary

responsibility for choosing the most effective

course materials and method of teaching in

realizing course objectives. Common methods

include lectures, discussions, case analyses,

seminars, gaming models, and directed research.

In addition, students conduct plant tours, surveys,

and field work, and local businessmen are invited

to give guest lectures or lead class discussions.

The case analysis method is used extensively

where appropriate. Students analyze, evaluate,

and formulate decisions for business situations

on the basis of the knowledge that they have

acquired or are learning. Usually, students are

required to make oral presentations on the

case and/or prepare written analyses, and case

materials are often used as the basis for course

examinations. Regardless of what course materials

or delivery methods faculty members adopt, they

aim to achieve a balance between theory and

practice, with a clear emphasis on relevance.

Core Courses

Core courses provide a foundation in the functional/specialized areas of business. Our core courses cover

Management Competencies and Current Perspectives, Corporate Financial Reporting, Contemporary

Management Accounting, Macroeconomics for Business Executives, Statistical Analysis, Strategic Information

Systems, Operations Management, Managerial Economics, Financial Management Organizational Behaviour,
