As one of the world’s leading and largest graduate business schools, INSEAD brings together people, cultures and ideas from around the world to change lives and transform organisations.

This worldly perspective and cultural diversity are reflected in all aspects of our research and teaching. In the course of a year, across the school’s two campuses in Asia (Singapore) and Europe (France) and our two centres in the Middle East (Israel and Abu Dhabi), 137 renowned faculty members from 35 countries inspire more than 1,000 degree participants – MBA, Executive MBA and PhD – and more than 9,500 executives from the world’s leading companies. Across this comprehensive range of programmes, our participants are drawn from more than 100 countries and represent all continents.

Today’s organisations need leaders with the knowledge and sensitivity to operate anywhere in the world. This is why business turns to INSEAD – to develop the next generation of transcultural leaders.

Welcome to The Business School for the World.

This is my first year as Dean of the MBA programme and I am delighted to take on this role. Everyone here is justifiably proud of our programme’s international reputation and the opportunities we offer future business leaders.

Along with the quality of our teaching, the intensity of our programme is a key attraction of INSEAD. Participants relish the challenge of our one-year accelerated programme and the resulting faster return on investment.

Tomorrow’s leaders (and today’s recruiters) also value INSEAD’s diversity. Representing over 70 nationalities, we create a challenging multicultural environment in which different perspectives thrive. There is no dominant culture, just a passion for open-minded debate and an eagerness to engage with new, unexpected ideas.

Thanks to our unique learning environment, INSEAD opens doors to top-tier career opportunities. Recruiters from all continents tell us that INSEAD graduates have the leadership skills and cultural sensitivity needed in today’s increasingly connected business world.

As I embark on my first year as Dean, I look forward to welcoming many aspiring business leaders to Fontainebleau and Singapore. For all of us, it promises to be an intense, stimulating year.

People say that ‘Diversity’ is the ‘D’ in INSEAD. No other business school offers such a multicultural experience, with over 70 nationalities included among the participants. In study groups of five to six, no more than two people of the same nationality are represented. In fact, there is no dominant culture at INSEAD – everyone is a minority.

The mix of cultures and personalities is matched by a mix of educational and professional backgrounds. Both the Fontainebleau and Singapore campuses have an enriching energy, powered by diverse outlooks and opinions.

INSEAD’s diversity has long-term benefits. In a typical year, our MBA graduates join organisations in over 50 countries, more than any other business school. Consequently, our alumni network has unparalleled global reach.

Recruiters tell us that our diverse learning environment creates open-minded, culturally aware graduates who have the knowledge and sensitivity to operate anywhere in the world – the next generation of transcultural leaders.

One year. Unparalleled diversity.

A picturesque French town, steeped in history. A thriving city-state, perhaps the world’s most truly multicultural city. It is hardly surprising that most MBA participants choose to spend time in both Fontainebleau and Singapore.

Fontainebleau, a 45-minute train journey from Paris, is a traditional centre for shopping, culture, and dining. Most participants rent an apartment or house in the area. Some share a country house or château on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest.

Singapore, Asia's vibrant financial and high-tech hub, is prosperous and efficient. The INSEAD campus is based in the city’s ‘Knowledge Hub’, where most participants live in modern condominiums.

The Wharton Exchange adds even more diversity to the mix. Participants who choose this option can live and study in Europe, Asia and North America during their year at INSEAD. In today’s inter-connected global economy, the benefits of soaking up such varied influences are immense.

One year to be informed and inspired.

The high calibre of regular INSEAD recruiters and the high levels of INSEAD graduate salaries confirm our world-class credentials. This reputation is reinforced by our position as the business school with the world’s largest Executive Education programme. Our faculty are skilled at dealing with practical and relevant business challenges as well as the profound academic issues encountered on the MBA programme.

But our teaching and research faculty are not simply world experts in modern management and entrepreneurship. They are also experts at passing on their knowledge. At INSEAD, our faculty’s inspirational talent in the classroom is as important as their leading-edge research.

Reflecting INSEAD’s diversity, the faculty includes professors from 35 countries. Whether based in Fontainebleau or Singapore, most faculty teach on both campuses. Their specialisations and fields of research are also diverse, covering the major issues facing international business. Not surprisingly, given the school’s multicultural spirit, much of their work has a global dimension.

To further extend INSEAD’s international reach, we have a faculty exchange programme with the Wharton School in the US and have established research centres in Abu Dhabi and Israel.

Renée Mauborgne and Chan Kim are Fellows of the World Economic Forum.

Their book, Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant is an international bestseller, with sales of over one million copies in the first year. Their Harvard Business Review articles, running to over half a million reprints, are also worldwide bestsellers.

“How is it that some business leaders achieve dramatic change in short timeframes with limited resources and high employee morale, while others struggle to adapt their organisations, investing significant resources yet demotivating employees in the process? Our collaboration considers such questions.”

Manfred Kets de Vries The Raoul de Vitry d’Avaucourt Chaired Professor of Leadership Development, Clinical Professor of Leadership Development and Director of INSEAD’s Global Leadership Centre

Manfred Kets de Vries scrutinises the interface between international management, psychoanalysis, psychotherapy and dynamic psychiatry. His specific areas of interest are leadership development, top executive team building and organisational change. The Financial Times, Le Capital and The Economist have judged him one of the world's leading thinkers on management.

“People come to business schools to be leaders, so it’s unfortunate that most schools teach a superficial view of leadership. Here at INSEAD, we offer a more in-depth understanding of leadership and entrepreneurship, including a solid background in short-term dynamic psychotherapy. ”

One year. Five intensive study periods.

The INSEAD MBA curriculum is designed to quickly and thoroughly prepare participants for a career in international business. This aim is reflected in the compressed time frame, reliance on group work and clear focus on international markets and settings.

The first few periods are based on a structured series of 13 core courses. These courses cover accounting, finance, statistics, strategy, marketing, operations management and organisational behaviour. Other courses focus on the environment in which business takes place. Subjects such as economics and political analysis help participants understand the drivers of change that will affect their future careers.

The second half of the programme is customisable. Participants take more than 10 electives, creating a mix of topics that will support their educational and professional goals. They can either pursue a generalist path toward management or specialise in a particular functional area. They may also create concentrations in specific areas, such as finance or entrepreneurship.

During one year, participants at INSEAD have a similar number of course hours as those attending most two-year MBA programmes. This is achieved by focusing on study five days a week and avoiding ‘down-time’ during the programme.

One year to develop life-long networks.

Life outside the classroom is as stimulating as the formal studies. The many clubs on campus include Entrepreneurship, Private Equity, INSEAD Women in Business, INSEAD International Development Organisation (a Net Impact Chapter) and the Global Leaders Series, which invites prominent international business leaders to speak at INSEAD. National Weeks are a social tradition at INSEAD. Arranged by participants of a particular nationality, they showcase the country’s culture, business, music, food and pastimes. During these weeks, the campuses become even more colourful and cosmopolitan than usual. Sporting facilities on both campuses are excellent. Tennis, squash, swimming, hiking and climbing are popular in Fontainebleau, a region also known as the horse-riding centre of France. In Singapore, participants enjoy the year-round sunny climate while cycling, blading, wind surfing, water skiing and playing beach volleyball. INSEAD also offers a particular welcome to partners and families, and over 25% of participants are joined by partners for the duration of the programme. The INSEAD Partners Club organises a range of events throughout the year for partners and children. Partners may participate in a variety of activities ranging from cultural outings in Paris and Singapore to career-related workshops.

One year to change all future years.

Our alumni often say that their year at INSEAD was a life-changing experience. The knowledge they acquire, the business skills they develop and the friendships they make combine to create an ‘INSEAD effect’ that lasts throughout their entire lives.

In career terms, the one-year investment produces measurable returns. The opportunities are immense. In 2007, aided by the Career Services team, participants pursued careers in over 55 countries upon graduation. Blue-chip multinational employers find INSEAD graduates particularly appealing. Our graduates know how to manage their time, prioritise tasks and juggle many responsibilities in a day. They are also worldly-wise and culturally sensitive. As a result, INSEAD recruits are renowned for being operational from ‘Day One’, anywhere in the world.

The potential return on investment is substantial, bringing you a lifetime of opportunities and benefits. It is an investment which cannot be measured merely in financial terms.

As a first step to joining this programme, we encourage you to learn more about the programme by visiting us in Fontainebleau or Singapore, where you can meet current MBA participants and hear their impressions. In the meantime, the next page gives a flavour of their opinions.

One year to earn your place among our alumni.

In a sense, you never leave INSEAD. As your MBA programme comes to an end, your life as an INSEAD alumnus begins. It is likely to be an enriching, exciting life. You will join a diverse alumni network of over 37,000 members, including more than 17,000 from the MBA programme.

Our alumni live and work in over 160 countries across all continents. The community may be geographically diverse, but our alumni share the same entrepreneurial streak. Twenty years after gaining their MBA, over 40% of our alumni own and manage their own business. The advice and encouragement that flows between INSEAD alumni, facilitated by the on-line alumni network, is an important tool in this business building.

Many alumni stay in close contact with INSEAD. A thousand alumni volunteers sit on national alumni association committees, helping to organise reunions and speaker events, as well as interviewing MBA candidates in their home countries. Four alumni share their views here...

The INSEAD MBA programmeThe one-year curriculum includes 13 required core courses and a minimum of 10.5 electives. Its flexibility allows you to create a tailor-made MBA. During all or part of your elective periods, you can select the subject matter of your studies to match your career objectives. The programme has two intakes each year, in both Europe and Asia:

September Late August to early July

January Early January to late December

Both intakes are organised into five periods of eight weeks each. Each period ends with exams and is followed by a short break. Both intakes are identical academically, although the January intake includes an eight-week summer break, giving you the option of taking a short internship.

Group work

You will be teamed with five to six people, selected to create diversity through age, nationality, gender, education and previous work experience. You will often work in study groups and several core courses include team-based examinations.

Assessment Your overall evaluation is based on your exam results, continuous assessment and class participation.

How do you learn?

This means that you will benefit from courses that are fresh, practical and relevant to the fast-moving global business world. You will engage in a diverse range of learning methods, including case-studies, lectures, business games, computer-based business simulations, live role-playing and academic study.

Such electives provide a chance to construct a tailor-made MBA programme that fits your personal career goals. Your electives begin in Period 3 along with two core courses, and take up all of Periods 4 and 5.

Examples of recent electives include: Global Trends in Private Equity, Realising Entrepreneurial Potential, Market Driving Strategies, Negotiations and the Art of Communications, a workshop for sharpening business presentation skills. Other popular subjects are focused on aspects of corporate social responsibility, as well as entrepreneurship. Study tours to China, India, Abu Dhabi and Silicon Valley continue to be offered as elective opportunities.

Campus exchange

Our campus exchange initiative, unique to INSEAD, allows you to follow the same programme on different continents. You can spend your first two periods on the Europe or Asia campus, then cross to a contrasting environment and lifestyle for at least one of your remaining three periods.

In 2008, 68% of the class chose to exchange campuses. Apart from access to wider networking and career opportunities, they also benefit from exposure to diverse day-to-day lifestyles. Fontainebleau ‘château’ life and Singapore ‘condo’

living are totally different but equally attractive. European and Asian cultures also add variety to the MBA year.

Career development

INSEAD is recognised by companies worldwide as a key source of individuals with proven academic excellence and strong leadership potential. MBA Career Services, located on both the Europe and Asia campuses, is a professional group ready to assist you in defining and realising your next career move. Regardless of the campus you are situated on, the Career Services team will provide the tools and resources to accompany you throughout the programme, from your initial thoughts about your career possibilities and evaluating your options, through to the final job search process and personal preparation for your future managerial role.

A typical career management calendar encompasses all five study periods. The first period is your self-assessment and career orientation stage. You can also attend counselling sessions. During the second period, you should start to define what you really want to do and prepare your job search strategy. This is the time to prepare your CV.

During Period 3, you should research your target companies and develop your job-hunting and networking skills. You can also attend relevant sector and function presentations, and meet with the Career Services team members for sector-specific recruitment advice. On-campus recruitment is primarily focused in Period 4. You will have the opportunity to attend company presentations and continue your sector and company research. This is the time to start applying for jobs and receive invitations to interviews. Your job interviews will continue during

Period 5. Our Career Services team will provide ongoing guidance during this decision-making time.

The hallmarks of these candidates are academic excellence, international awareness, strong interpersonal skills and the potential to succeed as a leader in a competitive business environment.

We look for intellectual curiosity coupled with a desire to learn in a rigorous academic programme, as well as personal qualities to contribute to the many activities of the school. You need to be prepared to stretch yourself.

Excellent academic achievement

The INSEAD MBA is intensive, rigorous and challenging. You must have a sound academic foundation. You should hold a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a recognised college or university. While some of our applicants have advanced degrees, this is not compulsory. The MBA programme tuition fees for the classes of July 2009 and December 2009 are €50,000. There are a number of scholarships available through INSEAD, amounting to €2.4 million in 2008. In recent years, approximately 20% of the class received an INSEAD scholarship. In addition to that, financing options may be found in your country of origin or residence.

Non-discrimination policy INSEAD is committed to the value of diversity as a source of learning and enrichment. In keeping with this principle, INSEAD does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, marital status, or handicap in admission to, treatment in, or employment in its programme and activities.

The sessions last about one and a half hours and are hosted by the MBA Department. We will answer your questions about the programme and between September and June you may be able to sit in on an MBA class. More formal sessions, INSEAD IN-House, are held regularly on both campuses. You need to register for these events online.

We also hold regular information sessions throughout the world and we encourage you to come along to these when they take place in your locality.
