Every year almost 4000 elementary school children attend The Essex Region Children’s Waterfest hosted here at the museum. “The Essex Region Children's Water Festival educates thousands of Grade 3, 4 and 5 students about the critical importance of clean water to their future. Held annually during the last week of May/first week of June at the Canadian Transportation Museum

and Heritage Village, the festival continues to be a smashing success. Elementary schools register their classes for a one day field trip. Students experience hands-on activity centers which will teach them about water conservation, protection, science, technology and attitudes. All activity centers are designed to meet the teaching objectives of the Ontario Curriculum. Most importantly, the festival is a FUN way for students to learn about our most valuable of resources - water. The Festival also hosts an “Environmental Careers Day” introducing Grade 10, 11 and 12 students to a variety of environmental professions. WaterFest is also a great week for CTMHV as we open the doors to our 1800s General Store to sell candy. Thank you to all our volunteers who will be helping with parking buses, selling candy, working the Gift Shop, helping in the 50s Diner and more!

Curator’s visit to Gananoque & Oshawa Car Museum

In April, our Curator travelled to Gananoque where she spent three days participating in the Ontario Museum Association’s course Museums in Historic Buildings. The course was held in the waterfront Arthur Child Heritage Museum which is situated across from the popular Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence River. While there, she stayed at the Historic Gananoque Inn which was built in the 1860s as a Carriage House. The town

of Gananoque is filled with historic charm and beautiful architecture. The course was very rewarding and Lisa came back armed with loads of information to help with conserving and preserving the historic buildings in

Heritage Village. On the way to Gananoque, Lisa stopped off in Oshawa at the Canadian Automotive Museum and in addition to meeting Alex, the Curator she took a moment to take advantage of a photo op with none other than Lightening McQueen.

In early April the CTMHV received some special visitors. Mr. and Mrs. James Thompson (left) visited the museum with their daughter and her husband. Mr. Thompson’s father founded Supertest Petroleum in 1923. After a tour in the Transportation Museum and a lunch in the Diner, the group made their way to the Supertest garage. Mr. Thompson walked around the garage and named people in photographs and told stories. It is moments like these that truly embody our mission statement “preserving the past for the present and future generations”. James G. Thompson was best known for designing and building the Miss Supertest hydroplanes. In 1954, Thompson built Miss Supertest II which he went on to race and set a world record of 184.94 miles per hour in 1957. The Miss Supertest II was equipped with a 2,000 horsepower Rolls Royce-Griffon motor. Thompson continued his racing career, building the Miss Supertest III, which went on to win the 1959 Detroit Memorial Regatta and the Hamsworth Cup in 1959, 1960, and 1961 with Bob Hayward as the driver. In 1959 Thompson was elected into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, and received the Medal of Honour from the Union of International Motorboating. He also became the president of Supertest Petroleum Cor-

poration Limited until the company was purchased by British petroleum in 1971. In 2011 Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp (right) honouring the hydroplane racing boat Miss Supertest III, her driver Bob Hayward, and the designer and builder, James Thompson. A big thank-you to Mr. and Mrs. Thompson for their contribution to our history, as well as his daughter and son-in-law who provided the information.

The CTMHV is pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Easter Seals Access 2 Program and the CAP, Cultural Access Pass Program from the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. The Access 2 Program allows for those visitors who require the assistance of a support person to receive free museum admission for that support person upon presentation of

their Access 2 card. The Cultural Access Pass Program allows for new citizens to have an opportunity to learn more about the history and rich cultures of Canada by granting free admission for one year to the new citizen and their children. Both programs are steps that promote inclusion and diversity in our welcoming community which the CTMHV is pleased to be a part of .

Mark your calendar! Don’t miss out on this great event!

Several members of the HVSO will be

attending and so will our Raffle Car!

On April 7th the CTMHV hosted another fabulous dinner and dance show, featuring the talents of Crystal Gage and Ryan St. Denis. The diner and volunteers served up a delicious meal of steaks, and the 50/50, raffle car, and silent auction sales all did well. Thanks for all who volunteered and attended this great event, and thank you to Mary-Catherine who snapped these great photos!

FROM THE EDUCATION & ARCHIVE DESK The Education Program is off to a great start this Spring as teachers continue to book their end of the year field trips. Of interest, we seem to be reaching a larger number of private schools. At time of publication, we were already almost totally booked for May and June. Special thanks go out to all of my volunteers this season. I would like to invite others to join our team. We can always use an extra pair of hands. Please contact me if you are interested in helping out. I am also looking forward to having two summer students working specifically with the Education department in development of our Senior and Day Camp programs. Lisa

Riders and pledges needed for our Big Bike Debut

Just a reminder that the CTMHV has a team entered in the Heart and Stroke Big Bike Fundraising event that will be held at Jose’s in Leamington on Wednesday May 30th. We are raising funds and

helping the community in the battle against heart disease! This great cause affects many of our members and volunteers whether directly or indirectly. We currently have only fifteen riders! We want to fill the bike and show the community that we care! The Bike can hold 29 riders. This will only take up about an hour of your time and you will only be on the bike for about 20 minutes. Please consider joining us. If you are not able to ride but you know someone else who can, please encourage them to ride in your place or make a pledge to support our team! Pledges can be made online at the Heart & Stroke Big Bike website or in person at the museum. We have a collection jar located at the reception desk and there will also be a pledge sheet in the Diner. It is sure to be a fun event for a very good cause. Just “Google” Heart and Stroke Big Bike or, for more information, try this link: https://secure-support.heartandstroke.ca.

On April 27th and 28th Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) teamed up with many local tourist attractions including the CTMHV to present the third annual Windsor Essex Staycation Expo. “From Festivals and Events, Golfing and Outdoor Activities, to Historical Tours there is a reason for everyone to plan a Staycation to Win-

dsor Essex this summer”. (source:http://visitwindsoressex.com). The CTMHV staff and volunteers promoted events and educational programs as we l l a s vo l un t e e r and membership opportunities. Thanks to Megan for taking the first shift and setting up this year, and to Lisa for taking it all down and to Emily and Becca for putting it all together. Special thanks also go out to all of our volunteers who took shifts promoting the museum.

If you’ve been wondering about the child-sized mini Tesla in the lobby at the museum, we are hoping to raffle it off in the near future in order to raise funds for the Education Program. If the required application for license is approved, tickets will be $5.00 each and only 635 tickets will be printed. The draw will then take place at the last regular Cruise-In of the season on October 25th. We hope to have tickets available for sale in time for the June Car Show on June 10th. Tickets would then be available until they are either sold out or until time of the draw date. Please check with the office in a few weeks to see if the license has been granted.
