    Art on Display

Photography exhibit: “South Shore Stories” Members, Bridgewater Photographic Society

“South Shore Stories” illustrates diverse ways that the South Shore

both inspires and sustains us. A broad range of photographs… from

still life images at home to scenic landscapes and everything in

between… together with brief storyboards, connect visual images with

stories about life on the South Shore of Nova Scotia.

The Bridgewater Photo Club was formed in 1982, to encourage and foster

the development of skills and appreciation of the art of photography. The

club invites photographers of all levels to join - from novice to professional -

for presentations, workshops, outings, competitions and socials.

This exhibit show images from many members of the club, with a wide range

    of experience and interests.

Margaret Hennigar Public Library, May 1-31

Oil on Canvas, Acrylics on Illustration Board exhibit:

“Marine and Aviation Moments” Wesley Lowe (Bridgewater)

This exhibit explores life and history, primarily as experiences on the water and in the sky. Featuring scenes from Nova Scotia’s past as well

as images from around the world, the works strive to achieve accuracy

in representation while also invoking mood and emotion, all using a lim-

    ited colour palette.

Wesley Lowe’s art career began in graphic design and illustration. After several years, he decided to freelance

full time as an illustrator. Over the next 30 plus years freelancing he created art for companies such as

National Geographic, Harlequin books and many other publishers as well as

    advertising agencies.

Wesley is mostly interested in recreating compositions that are historical in nature.

“I find great joy and challenge in the process of recreate this type of paintings.

The art form is more subject driven which puts a higher demand on my artistry,

therefore the success of the painting often lies in its narrative content.”

    Author Readings

Jill Martin, Sable Island in Black and White

Lunenburg-based author Jill Martin Bouteillier has been shortlisted for

two Atlantic Book Awards for her book Sable Island in Black and White, and

we are proud to announce that she will be at the library for a reading.

Travel back in time to 1884 when author Jill Martin-Bouteillier’s great aunt,

Trixie, was growing up on this isolated spit of sand 160 kilometres from the

North American mainland. Trixie’s father was Sable Island’s

superintendent, acting on behalf of the Nova Scotia government as

lawmaker, doctor, dispenser of stores, and, most importantly, head of

    lifesaving.

Come join us to celebrate the success of a local author! Jill will read from

the book, and answer your questions about it and the beautiful photos it

holds. She’ll also be happy to sign your copy!

Thomas H. Raddall Library, Thursday, May 11, 6:30pm

    Sky Curtis, Flush

Robin MacFarland is a fifty-five-year-old widow who grapples entertainingly with

aging, drinking, weight, loneliness, and career failure, all the while solving two mur-

ders. She is also a somewhat eccentric and highly intelligent journalist for the

Home and Garden section of a Toronto paper.

Although the novel is framed around an environmental plot about the theft of

Canada’s fresh water, it hinges upon a current social issue and Robin’s journey

through the middle portion of her life. Flush has an environmental subject

ostensibly underpinning its plot, a social issue motivating the crime, and,

ironically and symbolically, an endangered species as a murder weapon.

Join author Sky Curtis at the library where she will read from her new book, an-

swer your questions about writing, and discuss the issues central to the plot. Plus,

the next book in the series will be set in Nova Scotia, and Sky is looking for your

input on the issues that concern you!
