Still no sign of little LeratoThere is still no trace of the seven-year-old Lerato Mohomane, a year after she went missing from her home in the Nhlapo section in Katlehong.

It was on 28 April 2014 when the 50-year-old Thabo Nkosi allegedly disappeared with his girlfriend’s 7-year-old daughter, Lerato. This happened soon after Nkosi alleg-edly had a fight with his girlfriend, the 25-year-old Matseleng Mo-homane.

Police believe that his girlfriend ran away from her boyfriend after the fight that night and sought shelter with friends in Vosloorus. The next morning Nkosi allegedly went to Matseleng’s aunt, which is not far from his home in Nhlapho Section, where the child was staying with her grand-parents. He appar-ently claimed that he had been sent by Matseleng to fetch little Lerato, who was then 6 years old.

According to Dimakatso Keswa, the missing girl’s guardian, when Nkosi arrived at the house and told them that he had been sent by the mother of the young girl, the family had no reason to refuse to hand her over to the man who had left with

her mother the previous night. After several days, the Mo-

homane family approached Nkosi and demanded that he return the little girl, since they also had not seen the girl’s mother since the night the couple left together. Nkosi, however, could not produce the lit-tle girl and instead told members of the Mohomane family that the child was staying with his “sister” in Soweto. When the family went to Soweto to enquire about the miss-ing child from Nkosi’s sister, the woman denied any knowledge of the little missing girl.

Finally, the distraught Mahomane family then reported the matter to the police and Nkosi was questioned and detained for abducting the miss-ing child.

Kathorus MAIL joined the family at the Palm Ridge Court on the 13th of May this year, where Nkosi was due to appear in connection with the missing (now 7-year-old) Lerato. After Nkosi made a brief appear-ance, the case was adjourned to the 20th of May, seemingly because the case docket was missing. When the suspect appeared in court on 20 May, Nkosi’s pro deo defence at-

torney was not in court and the case had to again be postponed, this time to the 6th of July.

When Kathorus MAIL finally managed to trace Matseleng Mo-homane, the mother of the missing young girl, she too painted a gory picture of the man described as an “abusive” lover who turned her life into misery by refusing to disclose the whereabouts of the missing child.

Nkosi’s uncle, Thabo Ndlovu, also of Nhlapho Section, told Kathorus MAIL he was also in the

dark about what his nephew may have done with the little girl. “Un-fortunately I don’t know anything about the missing child, or where she is right now. All I know is that she used to come here every day after school to visit my nephew, Thabo,” said the elderly man.

Capt Mega Ndobe of the Katle-hong SAPS told Kathorus MAIL that the case was still under in-vestigation. He confirmed that the 7-year-old Grade 2 learner at the Mogobeng Primary school had not yet been found.

Where will I fi nd a job once I graduate?

Recent front page photographs of several criminals being rounded-

up and beaten by members of the community in different parts of Gauteng is an indication of just how frustrated people are with the rampant acts of criminality and the seemingly inability of the police to deal with crime.

Of course, to those of us in the me-dia who are in constant contact with the local police in the areas where our publication is distributed and circulated, the mainly distorted public perception that cops are not doing anything about crime is not a true refl ection of the facts and realities of what the “boys and girls” in blue have to deal with on the ground on a daily basis.

But, of course, to the members of the public who are the direct victims of crime in their residential areas – this statement may sound rather patronising.

I personally know that there are hundreds of dedicated top and low ranked police offi cers, both male and female, who work long hours dealing

with issues of crime in their areas. I also know for a fact that Brigadier Manganye, the head of the Katle-hong SAPS, is not someone who sits behind a cluttered desk, shielded by female assistants, and runs the station by remote control.

The towering Brig Manganye is a dedicated crime fi ghter who for several hours each day gets into a police vehicle and often single-handedly takes regular tours of the different sections of Katlehong and the surrounding informal settlements in search of criminals. His hard work nets him, on average, between six and twelve criminals a week, for serious and not so serious crimes and just about all of the suspects are found guilty and sent to prison.

Meanwhile at the Vosloorus SAPS, the head of the station, Brig Themba Denge, has gone on to establish a crack team of young crime detectives who have gained an upper hand on organised crimes such as business robberies, murder and drug deal-ing. In fact, just 24 hours before this article was written, the team of crack

crime detectives made up of offi cers from the EMPD and the SAPS and dubbed the “Denge Boys” by local criminals – thwarted a well-planned robbery at the Boxer Stores at the Lesedi Shopping Centre.

I can go on and name many other

dedicated high-ranking offi cers as well as their subordinate police foot-soldiers in this national battle against crime and criminals who often place their own personal safety and those of their fellow offi cers on the line to ensure that criminals do not emerge victors in this vicious real life game of “cops-and-robbers.”

But, while many a good police offi cer in the different levels of their ranks risk life and limb to fi ght crime in our communities, there is also an

equal number of corrupt offi cers and criminals who have infi ltrated the police in favour of the “opposing side.” These are the same cops who, despite their sworn allegiance to serve and to protect the citizens of South Africa against all forms of criminal-ity and lawlessness, will always take a chance and score an “own-goal” against their colleagues and the law-abiding communities in their areas.

It is these same bad apples in the police force who give the SAPS and the dedicated and loyal offi cers in their ranks a bad name. It is also because of them that the rest of the SAPS gets tainted by the same brush. Their involvement in acts of criminal-ity not only perpetuates crime, but also encourages criminals to act in impunity.

The increased levels of criminality on the other hand agitates communi-ties and prompts them to believe that the police are incapable of dealing with crime. As a result, communi-ties are taking the law into their own hands, sometimes with dire conse-quences for the common criminals

who get caught up in these acts of vigilantism.

Sadly, it is again the good cops who have to deal with the mess afterwards.

Condoms for 10-year-olds is absurd

Of course, if 20 years ago someone had told me that two decades into our newly acquired democracy, South Af-rica would be talking about whether or not the government should be issu-ing condoms to children at schools, I would have defi nitely told you “not in my life-time” and “never in a million years would my government even contemplate something as disgusting as that to be allowed in our schools.”

But, soon parents and guardians may have to live with the reality of their ten-year-old daughters being offered condoms at school. Which leaves me with a huge question mark over my bald head.

What next?

I read the front page story in the Kathorus MAIL about a peace

initiative brokered by the police between warring hostel factions in Kathorus with a bit of apprehension.

The peace initiative came after months of investigations by the po-lice following the mysterious death of several people who were mur-dered by gangs believed to be linked to these factions. But now, instead of the police arresting and charging

those involved with murder, they de-cided to broker peace and allow the killers to roam free.

To myself and many other law-abiding residents of Kathorus who have been forced to live in fear because of these killings, the police should have charged these two groups with murder instead of mak-ing them look like good citizens.

Motive for attacks is jealousy

Letter

My compliments go to the head of the police in Katlehong,

Brigadier Manganyi for his handling of the tribal faction wars between hostels inmates around Kathorus.

We all know the agony brought to the people of Kathorus during these faction fi ghts in the past years. For the police to have managed to bring this contentious issue under control, albeit that a number of lives were lost, should be hailed as a victory.

This should not, however, end with the leaders of the fi ghting fac-tions shaking hands in public. The government must now step in and

abolish the hostel system by turning all hostels into family units.

It is only by changing the old image of hostels and making them places where families can live hap-pily and in harmony that we will be able to change the attitudes of people who reside in these hostels. Without doubt, even though this will not completely eradicate crime and violence at hostels, at least the gov-ernment shall have provided shelter and dignity to families.

VOSLOORUS

As a South African born of a Zulu father and a Mosotho

mother, I was torn apart by the senseless and ruthless assaults and murder of foreigners by South Africans.

When are we going to learn that we are all Africans, regardless of where we may claim to come from, because our home is one and that is Africa? For some people to take up arms and even murder others because they were not born in the same country as them is wrong and should not be encouraged.

South Africans must look at for-eigners as people who have come to this country to make a better life for themselves and their families and not to “steal” jobs and women from their husbands. It is often South Af-rican women who throw themselves to foreigners for money.

Please treat foreigners like your brothers and sisters instead of chas-ing them out of the country and killing them.

- Stanley NgubaneMarimba Gardens

VOSLOORUS

It is diffi cult to believe that the South African Police Services

have failed the Meyiwa family.Their failure to arrest a suspect

and bring him or her to trial leaves a sour taste in the mouths of many South Africans who place their lives in the hands of “the boys and girls in blue.” Firstly, the SAPS as a law-enforcement agent, has dismally failed the people of South Africa in that there is more crime on our streets today than there was a decade ago.

Secondly, we have more crimi-nals in the police force today than we had a decade ago. Also the number of police offi cers who have been arrested for criminal offences surpasses that of offi cers arrested for the same offences a decade ago. We have become a nation

that glorifi es criminals by making crime look appealing.

By failing to apprehend a sus-pect in the Senzo Meyiwa case, the police have added yet another col-ourful feather in the caps of crimi-nals in our country. Judging by the number of failed and bungled cases by the police, it looks like it is becoming more diffi cult for them to investigate a crime than to arrest innocent people as suspects.

Please Minister of Police, re-employ the old police detec-tives that the SAP was known and respected for by both criminals and law-abiding citizens. The present-day “Rambo-style” policing tactics are costing the police their dignity.

- Concerned Law Abiding Citizen

The only valid reason I can think of why some South African

males are behind the attacks on foreigners is jealousy.

We all know how most of them took severance packages from work and when they realised that the money they had would not last them as long as they thought, many of them then decided to start “spaza” shops to augment their livelihood and support their families. Because none of them were business people, many of their shops folded due to bad management and lack of fi nan-cial skills.

When foreigners arrived in South

Africa they started their own infor-mal “spaza” shops, running these better (than the locals) and turning them into profi table and viable small income-earning businesses. Their local counterparts, instead of seeking advice, began to harbour resentment for these people from the outside.

My bet is that, if foreigners were as stupid and ignorant as the locals, there would defi nitely be no acts of xenophobia in South Africa.

- Abraham MolefePonong Extension 4

VOSLOORUS

I am in support of Sanco (South African Civic Organisations) in trying to unite local and

foreign business people following the recent violent xenophobic attacks in some parts of Kathorus.

As the leadership explained during the gather-ing at the Vosloorus Community Hall, South Africans can only survive and progress by embracing the knowledge and skills of others. The only way small business people can survive and become successful in their own country is by learning the skills of those who have experience.

So, I say no to xenophobia and forward to the unity of people of all races in our townships. We all need experience to grow and these people from outside have that experience, so it is better if they come and join us in the townships.

I am in my fi nal year as student at university and the prospects of me fi nding a job after

I had graduated is causing me and my parents sleepless nights.

All my hopes and aspirations of one day walk-ing out of university with a degree and being able to fi nd a job and start my own life are being dashed by the many other young graduates, my peers, who have just fi nished school and now fi nd themselves having to sit at home and be a burden and a nuisance to their struggling parents.

In our African custom, it is now my duty and responsibility to give something back to my par-ents as a token of my appreciation for raising me up and schooling me. But since I am now unable to render them this humble gesture, my biggest fear is: what will happen to me if both of them die before I can fi nd a job?

I don’t have an answer to this question. Neither do I have answers to many other related ques-tions which I cannot put to you in this letter. But as a youth, I think the future for many of us looks very bleak despite all the trouble our parents went through to educate us.

Mayor Mondli Gungubele during his preparations for the forthcoming Comrade Marathon. “I’m ready and fully prepared,” he said.

The case of a 34-year-old hostel resident who was arrested by the Katlehong SAPS at the Mazibuko Hostel for perjury has infuriated the police, says Katlehong SAPS spokesperson Capt Mega Ndobe.

According to Capt Ndobe, it all started when the suspect opened a robbery docket case with the police alleging that he had been robbed of his firearm. During investigations, detec-

tives arrested a 25-year-old man for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. Further police investigations revealed the firearm to be the same gun reportedly stolen from the owner during a robbery.

Pressed for more answers by the police during interrogations about how he came to be in the possession of the firearm, the 25-year-old suspect confessed that he had in fact “rented” the supposedly “stolen” gun from the

owner who had earlier reported it to the police as “stolen.”

The 34-year-old gun-owner was subsequently arrested and charged with perjury and defeating the ends of justice while the 25-year-old was charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

“As the police, we are disappointed with the amount of wasted “man-hours” by our detectives on investi-gating the case. I’m sure that energy

could have been directed to other more serious cases,” Ndobe said.

“The police will definitely not tolerate this type of criminal activity from members of the public who are licensed gun-owners. This perpetuates crime and at the end of the day it also distorts the region’s crime statistics,” said Capt Ndobe, adding that anyone found guilty of fraudulent activity will be punished.

Don’t waste time with false robbery claims, warn police

The head of the Vosloorus SAPS, Brig Themba Denge, has commended members of the com-munity for their tip-off which led to the arrest of three suspects during a robbery at the Boxer Store in Vosloorus recently.

According to Capt Mega Ndobe, the robbery was reported just after midnight on 22 May, after police received an anonymous tip-off and a team

of business robbery crime detectives rushed to the scene at the Lesedi Mall. Upon their arrival, they found several security guards lying on the floor with their hands bound.

“The rest of the robbers were inside their shop trying to grind their way through the safe. They surprised the criminals and managed to arrest three of them, while the other two escaped during the commotion. The arrested suspects were found in possession of three pistols with 17 rounds of ammunition,” he said.

One of the firearms seized by the police was found to belong to one of the security guards who was tied up. Detectives are now also trying to establish if the arrested gang members have been involved in other related crimes and have submitted the seized firearms for ballistic tests.

Members of the public have been warned not to confront either of the wanted men, but to report their whereabouts to the police since they are both considered to be highly dangerous. The three ar-rested men have been charged with robbery, posses-sion of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Anyone with information that could assist in the investigation should contact the police at the nearest police station, or contact Capt Ndobe on 011 617 3600 or on 079 694 6862.

Three of the robbery suspects arrested by the police during a break-in and robbery at the Boxer Store at the Lesedi Shopping Centre.

The Vosloorus Community Forum’s recent AGM was marked by disorderly chaos, but in spite of this, a new Board was elected. The forum’s AGM was held at the Dumane Hall, in Extension 14, Vosloorus on the 24th of May. Following the initial fracas, sanity prevailed and the new office bearers were elected amidst some disgruntled murmurs, groans and moans from dissatisfied members and colleagues. The newly elected Vosloorus CPF board members are:Chairperson: Mr Sipho Ndimande, Deputy Chairperson: Mr Samson Zwane, Secretary: Elizabeth Moremi, Deputy Secretary: Jerry Mohapi, Treasurer: Sam Moretsi, P.R.O: Nomsa Mwelase. Metro starts replacing manhole coversThe risk of Ekurhuleni chil-dren falling into manholes is quickly becoming a thing of the past as Ekurhuleni rolls out the branded orange plastic manhole covers, replacing the theft-prone metal covers.

The replacement of the old cast-iron covers is one of the municipality’s efforts to curb vandalism and the theft of man-hole covers.

“The new plastic covers do not have the monetary value that the metal thieves are looking for and we believe it is a ground-breaking

intervention to put an end to this malicious crime. Of great value to the residents is the reduction of the risk of falling into the man-holes,” Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Themba Gadebe said.

The new manhole covers, Gadebe added, will also go a long way in decreasing the number of overflowing sewers that are mainly caused by foreign objects being dumped into open manholes.

Furthermore, a task team has been set up to visit scrapyards across Ekurhuleni in search of

any cast iron manhole covers and other municipal-owned property that were traded for money.

In cases where scrapyards are found in possession of council-owned items, a charge of theft will be laid against the owners of the company. The municipal-ity must be able to prove that the items are council property.

The City encourages residents to continue reporting missing manhole covers and any suspi-cious or illegal activity to the call centre on 0860 54 3000.

The BVFBA – officially known as the Boksburg Vosloorus Food and Beverages Asso-ciation, is a group comprising liquor traders that is run by small and medium businesses owners from different areas around Kathorus.

Members of the association meet on a regular basis to discuss matters affecting their liquor trad-ing businesses, including compli-ance with all relevant legislation such as regulatory government bodies, SARS, municipal by-laws and law-enforcement agents.

The group’s meetings are host-ed weekly on a rotational basis. According to the group’s general secretary, Musa Ntshangase, the association also assists affiliated members to obtain legal liquor trading licences. “The association hosts more than one hundred and twenty members during each of our regular meetings. The finan-cial support the host member gets by hosting such a gathering is one of the additional empow-erment values the association offers to its members,” explained Ntshangase.

According to Ntshangase, apart from the financial support, there is also the added value of business networking among members.

“Being a member of the as-sociation helps me a lot because I can get information on how to improve my business and its serv-ices,” said Sibongile Mbokota who runs a wholesale store that sells packs of snacks and other edibles, including cool drink cases. She also runs a liquor store and wholesaler in Phase 2, Ex-tension 28. The outlet known as “Inkosana Wholesale” supplies most of the smaller taverns in the neighbouring suburbs.

Her business operations are strictly monitored by the associa-tion, which also helps and guides her with issues of compliance and municipal trading by-laws.

Membership is open to all small business operators and the association encourages all small business operators to join. The as-sociation’s membership stretches as far and wide around Thokoza, Katlehong and Vosloorus as well as to other neighbouring town-

ships around Kathorus, Ekurhu-leni, Thembisa and Soweto.

“We educate and promote responsible trading principles to both our members and their patrons and the sale of liquor is strictly applied according to stip-ulated rules and regulations. This includes the requirement that our members cannot and should not sell liquor to people under the age of 18, or to intoxicated patrons and to pregnant women. Members who are situated near a place of worship or a school are required to operate only in the afternoon when school is out and on weekends,” Musa Ntshangase, said.

The association has a fully-staffed and operational office in Vosloorus and each affiliated member’s confidential details and documents are kept here. Members contribute to the effec-tive running of the office as well as pay a once-off joining fee of R450. “The association is also a member of Gauteng Liquor Fo-rum, which also abides by the na-tional liquor forum regulations,” Musa Ntshangase added.

BVBFA wants to empower members

It was a bright sunny Saturday afternoon and the family of the Batlokwa chief, Chief Mluleki Jali in Vosloorus, was ready to welcome the family’s future in-laws, the Malambule’s who had arrived to pay lobola for the Jali’s youngest daughter, Nomakhozana.

Describing the African aspect of the ceremony, Chief Jali told Kathorus MAIL’s Lubabalo Roro about the importance of the occasion, its tradi-tions and cultures according to African values. The traditional ceremony was attended by various traditional dignitaries, among them the Batlokwa royalty, chiefs, as well as elders from the Jali and Malambule families who had all come to witness the occasion.

“This is not the normal lobola payment, it is a celebration of tradition, culture and ubuntu with my neighbours, my people and their people and also colleagues from the traditional council. Lobola is a culture which brings back tradition. Tradition in turn, gives back to customs which is what many black people and youth lack today,” said an elated Chief Jali as guests enjoyed themselves in the open yard around his modest home in Vosloorus Extension 14.

Vusi Malambule’s “aba khongi”, or traditional “emissaries”, had arrived on that day to pay lobola for his future bride, the last of Chief Jali’s four daughters, Nomakhosazana Tsilane Jali. “This is a traditional ceremony as you can see the people here are all wearing traditional attire and some are also in their modern clothes with a mix of traditional colours in a modern way,” said Chief Jali as he entertained the guests.
