All about Body Awareness Body awareness is an importantdevelopmental measure in early childhood. Itissomethingweusuallytakeforgranted, yet it plays the most fundamental role in our abilitytolearn. It isatermweoftenhear, and although we know it’s an importantareaofchilddevelopment, it’snotalwaysunderstood! So, what exactly is bodyawarenessandhowdoesonepromoteit? Body awareness is about understandingyourbody, andbodyparts, andhowtheyareinrelationtoeachotherandthespacearoundyou. It’sthe“knowing”whatyourbodyisdoingwithouthavingtorelyonyoureyes to tell you. Our senses help promote body awarenessGoodbodyawarenessrequiresoursensesto work as a team. The contribution ofour movement receptors and the visual and tactile senses are most important.Johannesburg-based occupationaltherapist and Clamber Club teacher, Gabbi Katzenellenbogen, explains that bodyawareness develops from our sensorysystems; the vestibular (movement),proprioceptive (body position) and tactilesystems. “Children need to know whattheir bodies are doing in order to learn and interact with the environment. Bodyawarenessimpactslearningandplanningofmovements,”saysKatzenellenbogen.“Ifwedonotknowwhatourbodiesaredoinginspacethenitcanimpactonourrelationshipandinteractionwiththingsaroundus.” How does body awareness develop?Body awareness is developed throughmovement.Movementexperienceshelptobuild neural memories about all the parts of ourbodies.Throughbodyawarenessweareabletosenseandunderstand informationabout the nature of gravity, the hardness ofsomethings, thesoftnessofothers, theflexibilityofothersetc.
