The term “kin keeper” conjures up thoughts of a warm heart and a big smile that says: I’m glad you’re here.

It’s true. The kin keeper is easy to spot: he or she is the one who remembers the birthdays, plans the gatherings, spreads the word, shares the news, steadies the communication, maintains the peace, keeps perspective, preserves traditions. The kin keeper keeps kin together. You can pretty much always count on this family member even though the kin keeper’s attempts to keep the kin intact don’t always work. Family mind-set and disposition play a big part in kin keeping. It has to be a group effort. Not all families have one, though. Sometimes there just isn’t anyone to take on the responsibility – or the privilege, depending on how one views it. The kin keeper is not necessarily the matriarch. There’s no official selection, no election. There isn’t a Kin Keeper Day. But we do have the second Sunday in May marked as the official day to

honour our mothers. Might seem silly to select one single day to honour a parent but it works for many people. For those of us who no longer have parents to celebrate with, well, we share an unspoken understanding. It’s an awareness that threads its way through the 365 days of each year. That’s simply the way it is. When I was a child, my mother wrote this in my autograph book: “Love many, trust few. Always paddle your own canoe.” Research indicates this anonymous saying was taken from a poem in 1852 and misquoted at that. Another version reads, “Know many, trust few, learn to paddle your own canoe.” Both make sense to me, and I’ll always remember the message just as vividly as I recall her handwriting. Several years ago, my daughter took on the role of kin keeper in a natural and understated way. Let’s think about this: Mother Teresa said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.” Happy Mother’s Day.

Hi there, EditorParks Canada has opened all seven bays of the main dam here; they must want to drain Cameron Lake for some reason or other. I have just learned that Rhonda Watson’s [THE VILLAGE SHOP] Fashion show has been put off due to flooding in Burnt River. I was there yesterday and the water certainly is very high and a real problem for those folks.

In the past when the dam was opened up a lot, I questioned it, and was told that the reason was to alleviate flooding in such places as Burnt River. But Burnt River is 49 feet higher than Fenelon Falls (I measured it with a GPS) If the level of Cameron Lake were a factor in Burnt River’s flooding, then Fenelon Falls, would be under water up to and over the old MacArthur Hotel [over MacArthur’s drug store]. To the Editor This year, Happy Days Houseboats is celebrating 35 years in business and we would like to thank the Bobcaygeon Chamber of Commerce for an excellent start to the houseboating season! On Saturday, April 20, the Awards of Excellence were held at the Dunsford Community Centre and Happy Days Houseboats was awarded with the Outstanding Business Achievement and Business Leader of the Year Awards. It is a true honour to be recognized by a business community that has so many leaders within the community and within their respective industries. The strength and success of the business community of Bobcaygeon is what makes our community such a popular destination for many. Dear Editor A few weeks ago I tripped coming out of a local business and fell on my face, lost my glasses, bumped by head and hurt my hand and knees. Local resident Susan Smallwood was driving by. She very kindly turned her car around to come to help me. She drove me home and then drove my husband back down to pick up our car at the local business. Susan also called later in the day to see how I was doing. I was very grateful for this kindness and wanted to say a public thank you to Susan. By the time this edition goes to press the flooding should have abated. But I have to tell you that throughout the entire event, the City of Kawartha Lakes is to be congratulated in every regard on how each and everyone rose to the occasion. Everyone from the OPP, Management and Staff, in particular Brenda Stonehouse who kept everyone updated via Press Releases over the entire week end, to Emergency Measures and to our Volunteer Fire Fighters. At the Council meeting of April 23, the Mayor and members of Council gave very positive feedback on how things were handled. It is startling to hear that they would be putting sand bags along Front Street in Bobcaygeon. Both of our Councillors Warren and Junkin of Bobcaygeon and Strangway and Elmslie of Fenelon Falls were out and about checking on things. Brian Junkin mentioned that he visited the Waters Edge, a local restaurant to see how the new owners were faring. They are right in the midst of renovating and the rising water is the last thing they need. We wish them well.

What’s the Risk?The need for a ‘Risk Management’ official to monitor and manage our water and waste water systems has again been put forward for Council to make a decision, but once more it has been deferred until the next council meeting May 14. The nub of the problem is twofold; does the City hire within and add to the number of full time employees working for the City or do they hire the outside resource, the Kawartha Region Conservation Authority. Now that is a prickly issue when one considers the City has either the first or second highest number of employees in the City. The issue was hotly debated and we have not seen the end of this just yet. The water issue is an expensive and yet vital to the well being of the people of the Kawartha Lakes. Councillor Stauble (Ward 16) raised the issue to defer because Councillors have not had time to read and digest information sent by the KRCA and in order to make a responsible decision everyone should take the time necessary. No one seemed to take issue with the lateness of the communication by the KRCA. But once they do make this decision, will that be the end of it? I for one doubt it.

EXTREME MEASURES

Unless you are a monk in training or have been on a space mission during the past few weeks you will probably

have read or heard a lot about the Boston Marathon bombings and the subsequent events. You will also be likely to agree with me when I say that extreme measures were adopted in the aftermath of the initial attack. The question of whether such measures were necessary is now the subject of some considerable debate. From the media reports it would seem that the two young men who are accused of the bombing were not the most sophisticated of terrorists. Firstly, they remained in the Boston area for several days while the FBI scanned videos which eventually enabled them to release photographs of the two suspects. Then, against all odds they embarked on a series of wild criminal acts including the murder of a police officer. There is no doubt that the two desperados were highly dangerous, which in itself is not surprising considering the circumstances and the fact that they were the subject of a manhunt being carried out by some nine thousand law enforcement officers. Bonnie and Clyde had nothing on these two! We learned from reports that the older of the two suspected terrorists was killed by police and his nineteen year old brother was chased by police and then abandoned his vehicle and escaped on foot, like a wounded fox being chased by the hunt. What followed is the part where paranoid officials and law enforcement groups took the term “extreme measures” to a whole new level. They shut down a city of more than a million people! In a city of this size and importance such a decision causes massive inconvenience. Ordinary people were expecting to get married, undergo surgery, move into a new house, operate a business, earn their living, leave town on a family emergency and anything else you can think of. Even the massive force of nature would rarely cause such havoc in the lives of so many. And all of this in order to capture a frightened wretch of a teenager who was eventually found cowering under a tarp in a parked boat. The problem, as I see it, is that such a precedent

Already we have seen the rights of individuals ignored and abandoned in the name of anti-terrorism and governments, including our own, seem determined to enact legislation which further erodes these rights. ”Extreme measures” often include torture and imprisonment without recourse to legal representation and ignoring civil liberties. Are those whose misguided values lead them to terrorism gaining the upper hand? I assume that part of the purpose of committing an act of terrorism is to gain public attention and induce a reaction which causes widespread inconvenience, fear and disruption. If so, it would be hard to deny that the Boston bombers have achieved a large part of their goal. Desperate measures and extreme measures are closely related, where will this lead us?

ROOTS & RAMBLINGSThis year’s April certainly lived up to its reputation of being the cruelest month with only a hint of spring from time to time. One way to deal with the feeling of being cheated out of a decent springtime is starting seedlings indoors under artificial lights. First, start with reliable seeds from a reputable company. Using your own seeds saved from last year works sometimes, but they may not come true to the parent plant. When starting seeds indoors, follow the package instructions carefully. use recycled milk or juice boxes (2 litre size) with the topside cut out. Flats made from wood can also be used. Fill whatever container you choose with good organic starter soilless mix. The medium must be lighter than potting soils, therefore ensuring moisture retention and good root development during the first few days. Do not use regular garden soil since it can contain soil-born pests. Some seeds need to be buried slightly, some need no cover at all and some need darkness to germinate. Consistent moisture is essential for germination, so cover the containers with a sheet of kitchen plastic to slow evaporation. If warm temperatures are required to germinate, I set the containers on an old cookie sheet raised over a heating vent on the floor. Do not place in direct sunlight as this tends to dry out the medium and fries the seeds. Some seeds germinate in a few days; others take a couple of weeks. The seedlings then go under lights lowered as close as possible. They need 12 to 14 hours of light. Do not overwater. When the seedlings have 4 leaves, transplant to a small peat pot, which eventually can be set directly in the ground when all danger of frost has passed.Submitted by John BickBobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society

at Settlers’ Village

Thank you to those who attended our Earth Day Celebrations on April 21. We had 10 environmental groups on hand with information about various ways to make our properties, households and community greener. The many children in attendance enjoyed making dolls from rags, assembling bird houses, transplanting seedlings and playing their own percussion instruments which they fashioned from recycled materials. The highlight of the afternoon was their parade around the grounds led by the Enviro Drum Group hired as entertainment for the event. All these activities were designed to remind us that people in bygone days regularly practiced reusing, recycling and reducing. Living in harmony with the natural world was essential to a settler’s existence; an example we need to heed more frequently. Soon the summer staff will be on the job welcoming local and regional school groups who come to sample the lifestyle of the Kawartha Settler. The Education Program staff will also be planning our six Summer Camps for those children enrolled in these week-long immersion experiences. With professional marketing / tourism training and experience gained while employed at the Lindsay and District Chamber of Commerce, Jessica will help to actively promote the many events and programs in this coming year. Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 5 to receive the 2012 Financial and other reports as well as welcome new directors to our volunteer board. Upcoming events at KSV include the Horticultural Society’s Plant Sale, May 25, and Settlers’ Day, on June 9.


GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT Presentation An Earth Day Highlight

An exciting announcement and cheque presentation was made from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to Environmental Action Bobcaygeon in order to create a nature park. The presentation took place at Kawartha Settlers’ Village, April 21, during Earth Day celebrations, says Richard Fedy, EAB member. “It will be in the area behind Caygeon Lanes (County Road 36)”, Fedy explains. “There is a lovely parcel of property – mature woods – that a local developer donated to the City. Environmental Action Bobcaygeon received stewardship to put in walking and hiking trails. Our hope is it will be used year ‘round.” According to Karen Cook, member of OTF Grant Review team, “The $87,800 investment will provide resources to build a wonderful trail for your community. The Foundation was able to support this initiative because it’s a great fit with our sector priorities as you are building the capacity of the environment sector to safeguard and restore ecosystems.” Cook added, “While we celebrate and honour Earth Day, this project is the vision of many dedicated citizens who volunteer their time and resources to help ensure future generations have access to a diverse and healthy environment to enjoy the natural gift of our land.” Fedy says, “We hope to have local Bobcaygeon Horticultural Society working together to put in a bee pollinator. That is, I believe, a big, nice collection of wild flowers to entice bees. We’ll be using the help of a lot of talented people to mark

and identify interesting plant life so the park will also have a good educational component.” The plans are already well underway. Fedy says, “The survey has been done, the border marked, and we’re beginning the layout for the trails in May. We hope construction as early as May will allow completion by the end of the summer. We’re pumped!”

A BIT OF HISTORyThe majority of countries that celebrate Mother’s Day do so on the second Sunday of May. On this day, it is common for mothers to be celebrated with presents and special attention from their families, friends and loved ones.

Worldwide Spread of Mother’s Day In many countries, the American version of Mother’s Day was imported with little cultural adaptation. Others, including countries whose tradition stems from the English Mothering Day, maintain traditions quite different from those of North America. Still others have ignored or abandoned the more religious and commercial

notions of Mother’s Day, choosing instead to focus on women’s issues and women’s rights by celebrating International Women’s Day. Modern Celebration When the United States congress approved Mother’s Day in 1914, they designated it for the second Sunday in May, and required that the President proclaim the Holiday every year shortly prior to its commencement. Canada was one of the first nations to pick up the US version of Mother’s Day, making it a national holiday in 1909, one year. The customs largely reflect those of its southern neighbor, although in Canada there seems to be an added emphasis on doing chores for the Mother and cooking her supper. ADOPTION BLITZ& Pet Appreciation Month

As Pet Valu celebrated National Pet Appreciation Month, Bobcaygeon’s Pet Valu’s featured its 3rd Annual Pet Adoption Blitz. Last year, more than $500,000 was raised by the Pet Valu chain and was donated to charities across Canada. As a group, they have already exceeded that figure this year. The Bobcaygeon store alone has also surpassed last year’s fundraising efforts which will go to the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes (HSKL). Getting A Bad Rap?

Without a “Touch Screen Monitor”, upgrading to Win 8 has not been an enlightening experience for most Win XP and Win 7 customers. The way Win 8 handles the Apps by automatically flipping from the “Win 8 Tablet Screen” to the “Desktop Screen”, the four corners on the monitor to control Apps, opening and closing documents, etc., are illogical to understand initially. Here is what makes one key on the keyboard work well for me. On the keyboard there is a key that I use more since my upgrade to Win 8. It is the “Windows Key” to the left of the “alt’ button. My “windows key” allows me to easily flip back and forth between the “Win 8 Tablet Screen” and the “Desktop Screen”. Once “non touch-screen” Win XP/Win 7 users who have upgraded to Win 8 use this “windows key”, it will more likely result in a better experience. If you are currently using Win XP with a “non-

touch screen monitor”, I suggest that if you have a need to upgrade, then go with Win 7. Keep in mind that special drivers for peripheral equipment and internal hardware may be required when upgrading to any new Operating System (OS), plus licensed applications that may or may not be compatible with Win 7. If you have a Win 7 OS (such as in my case) with “non-touch screen monitor”, there is no real need to upgrade to Win 8. For those buying a new computer with Win 8 (Desktop, Notebook, Laptop, etc.) include a “touch-screen monitor” for a better experience, otherwise you may want to have the store load Win 7 for new computers with “non-touch screen monitors”. FIDDLE AND STEP DANCE COMPETITION

Receives $10,200 Grant

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) hosted an orientation and funds monitoring meeting at the Peterborough Public Library on April 9. Several organizations including two Bobcaygeon groups in attendance received OTF financial assistance to help promote various community related activities. The 44th annual “Ontario Open Fiddle and Step Dance Contest” to be held at the Bobcaygeon Arena on July 26 and 27 received a $10,200 OTF grant. The funds will enable competition enhancement activities including a first time alumni reunion and a pre-competition concert featuring fiddler Karen Reed at the Knox Presbyterian church on June 8. The “Environmental Action Bobcaygeon” committee received an $87,800 grant to establish a wilderness park on an 8-acre site East of Highway 36 behind the Lakes Church. The funds will cover access requirements for visitors including construction of trails for walking, hiking and cross-country skiing.Submitted by Wally Potolicki

NEW WATER MANAGEMENT STRATEGy

In Response to Minden Flood Local MP Barry Devolin is calling on federal, provincial and municipal governments to work together to develop a strategy so that Minden is never underwater for two weeks again. “On April 18th, a freak storm dumped more than 3 inches of warm rain on frozen ground and lakes when water levels were already high during the spring runoff season” explained Devolin. “The result was widespread local flooding across Haliburton and Hastings Counties, Kawartha Lakes and Muskoka Region – including the downtowns of Minden, Bancroft, Burnt River, Huntsville and Bracebridge.” While water levels receded to manageable levels in other areas within a week, parts of the village of Minden remain underwater 10 days after the fact, with expectations it could take another week or more for floodwaters to leave the village. “People in Minden are scared, frustrated and angry,” said Devolin. “And they are demanding answers and action from their political representatives – including me.”

“In my opinion, all levels of government must come together to say “two weeks underwater is not acceptable” and tackle the challenge “what can we learn from this experience, so we’re better prepared next time?” Devolin acknowledged the immediate priority is to manage through the current crisis, and then help residents and businesses get back on their feet. He pledged to do whatever he can to help Minden Hills Reeve Barb Reid, Haliburton County Warden Carol Moffatt and local MPP Laurie Scott in the coming days and weeks. “I’d also like to pay tribute to all volunteers, local leaders and disaster management workers, and staff at the Trent Severn Waterway for their efforts during this difficult time,” said Devolin. “Their efforts are recognized and appreciated.” Devolin disagreed with suggestions that flooding in Minden and Burnt River was simply the fault of Trent Severn Waterway management, by pointing out the TSW does not control water levels in Bancroft, Huntsville or Bracebridge. “I believe there is no simple answer or single solution to this challenge, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work together to do everything we can to reduce the chances of flooding in the future, or minimizing the damage if it does happen.”

This year’s 32nd Annual Buckhorn Spring Show in Saturday, May 18 and Sunday, May 19. The Craft Show welcomes approximately 110 artisans from all areas of Ontario, featuring the very best selection of Canadian handcrafted Seasonal,

Country, Traditional and Contemporary Crafts. This show showcases approximately 20 new exhibitors making their debut in Buckhorn, along with a number of Artisans who have been away for a number of years. The first 500 people to arrive each day will receive a Free Reusable Shopping Bag to help carry away your purchases. The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative is an incorporated non-pro�t, charitable, organization

whose mission is to recruit family physicians to the City of Kawartha Lakes, to retain family physicians in the City of Kawartha Lakes, and to conduct research, public education, outreach and advocacy as it relates

to recruitment and retention of family physicians.

COMMUNITy CARESThere’s great news for local residents who are without a family physician. With the upcoming addition of a new doctor, the Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes Community Health Centre will be at its full complement of 2.5 full-time equivalent family physicians. As a result of the recent addition of Dr. Othman Elfahad and the arrival of Dr. Victoria Manfredi in July, the CHC is currently accepting applications for new clients. Note that eligibility is for individuals who currently do not have a family doctor or nurse practitioner, and who reside in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Since 2009, the CHC has offered its clients the chance to receive primary health care through a team approach. With a staff comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and other health professionals, the CHC reflects a model of health care that is being endorsed and embraced by many in the field. The CHC’s ability to provide local residents with quality health care is reflected in the province’s recent commitment of $7.4-million to support the construction of a new facility. The centre’s current facilities in Lindsay have become cramped due to the increased number of clients (approximately 1,700 local residents who did not have a family physician prior to the CHC’s opening). Local residents currently without a family

doctor or nurse practitioner may get an application for consideration to the CHC by contacting any Community Care office in the City of Kawartha

EvLT For Varicose Veins

EVLT or Endovenous Laser Treatment is the latest treatment for varicose veins. With EVLT, the varicose vein is treated using a thin laser fiber that goes inside the vein and closes it. There are several treatment options for varicose veins, which includes sclerotherapy, phlebectomy, vein stripping and EVLT. However, EVLT is probably the safest method and it offers the following advantages: Compared to surgery, EVLT is less invasive, with less risk of scarring and post-procedure infection. The treatment time is less than surgery and the patient can carry on their routine normal activities immediately after the procedure. The patient wears

a stocking for one week and usually that is the extent of post-procedure care.Compared to injection sclerotherapy, there is less risk of skin discolouration and recurrence. In addition, there is little or no risk of allergic reactions, which is a possibility with sclerotherapy. With EVLT, there is rapid recovery with reduced post-operative pain. Yes, it’s here. Time to play in the dirt. Even though there are always the eager types who jump right in, there are more who exercise caution by planning ahead. No matter how young or old you are, a little preparation goes a long way to prevent injuries. Nobody wants to sit out the season as a result of improper conditioning. Of course, you will have spent the winter months actually rehearsing the demands you’ll place on your body. The best way to achieve that is by following your personalized fitness program incorporating gentle strengthening, cardio, balance, and stretching exercises. Use these simple guidelines and you may save yourself from stiffness, muscle cramping and (perish the thought!) injury.

Gardening Guidelines:1. Wear gloves, hat and

appropriate footwear.2. Begin slowly with smaller

projects and build up your stamina gradually.

3. Switch positions frequently when raking or digging.

4. Kneel carefully – use kneepads to absorb pressure.

5. Get down slowly and change your position often.

6. Bend your knees (use “soft knees”) and keep abdominal muscles slightly contracted to support your core.

7. Use proper body mechanics, safe lifting and back care techniques at all times.

8. Take frequent breaks and hydrate your body with water.

9. Remember to use your sunscreen.

10. End with a brief stroll, some gentle stretches and a warm bath or shower.

11. If you have kids, get them out there to help you.

Instructor Ryan Hawkrigg will provide tips and advice on improving your running and helping you achieve your athletic and personal goals. Ryan has competed as a varsity athlete in both cross country and track and field at the national and international level and has a bachelor of science in Human Kinetics. This program runs Thursday evenings 6:00 to 7:00 pm, starting in the North End room at the Victoria Park Armoury, followed by a group run. Topics will include: Assessment (Endurance/Form), Proper Warm Up/Cool Down Techniques, Programming (distance/speed/strength), Speed Training, Strength Training, Stretching/Injury Prevention, and The Long Run. Class starts Thursday May 23 and runs for 8 weeks. Cost is $73.50 plus tax, pre-registration is required. This is a great way to get ready for the Lindsay Milk Run! I never use bottled salad dressing. I find them too oily and heavy. Keeping a few staples on hand allows you to make a myriad of dressings that you can control the flavor of. Plus, you can make just enough to use, or like this recipe, you can make extra and keep it in the fridge and have a fresh vinaigrette on hand all week. This is a great first-course salad. If you want to amp it up for dinner, try adding grilled chicken or avocado to the mix.

Grilled Endive Salad with Orange vinaigretteSalad:3 heads endive, halved lengthwise1/2 package assorted mixed baby greens 1/2 pint blackberriesCrumbled blue cheese

vinaigrette:3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (2–3 oranges) 1/2 teaspoon orange zest1 shallot, very finely diced1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard1 cup good quality extra virgin olive oilSalt/pepper

1. Preheat your grill to medium high heat. 2. While grill is heating prepare the vinaigrette. Whisk

together all ingredients except the olive oil until just combined. Then, while continuing to whisk, slowly pour the olive oil in a thin stream until the vinaigrette emulsifies and no longer separates. Check your seasoning. Set aside.

3. Once grill is at the right temp (you should be able to hold your hand a few inches above for no more then 4-5 seconds) prepare the endive. Brush both sides of lettuce with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Grill 1-2 minutes per side until slightly charred and tender. Remove from grill.

JEAN LOIS WELBURN (DUDMAN)

On April 27, 2013 at the age of 78, Jean Lois Welburn (Dudman)

passed away peacefully at the Bethania Personal Care Home, in Winnipeg. With her family by her side her eternal care was entrusted

to the Angels.

Jean was born on March 15, 1935. She is survived by her brother Marshall and sister Carol. Dearest mother of Randy (Brenda), John

(Susan), Mary (Mike), Gord (Julia), Susan (Jerry), Ken (Kelly). Jean cherished all of her grandchildren,

Rob, Chris, Charmaine, James, Alisha, April, Tara, Jeremy, Sandra, Bonnie, Gerrit, Adam, Lucas,

Jordan, Brady and Shy Ann. She leaves behind her many treasured Great Grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in laws and friends. Predeceased by her parents Gordon and Goldie and Brother Myron.

Jean was born in Ontario and spent her final years in Manitoba. She loved to garden and enjoy the birds. She enjoyed all of her children’s hobbies

from rock music, to sports, boats, trucks, cars and motorcycles. Jean was always a compassionate

and giving person and was always there for others and continued even during her time at the nursing home. Her laughter and her grasp of your hand when walking together will be greatly missed.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday May 3, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in Green Acres Funeral
