The Top Ten Track Meet, featuring the best track & eld athletes from eastern

Montana, will be held in Glasgow tonight. Field events were to begin at 3:00,

the National Anthem at 3:30 and running events at 4:15. Pictured above, Benji

Phillips patiently waits his turn at last year’s Top Ten Meet on Scotty Field where

he would not only win the javelin throw, but would set the new meet record in

the process. His distance of 186’2” would break the old record of 182’7” held by

former Scotty athlete Seth Combs who would go on to compete at the collegiate

level. Benji placed fourth at state as a freshman and second place last year. This

season he has a throw of 196’3” which is not only the best mark in the state (AA,

A, B & C) but that mark is also 6th best in the nation. Tonight’s javelin event gets

underway at 5:30. It truly is something special watching Benji throwing that spear.

    Can he break it again?

     O V E R   he USDA Natural Resources Conservation

Service and the Bureau of Land Management areworking together to develop new methods formapping land cover across sage grouse habitat in

Montana.  o accomplish this shared goal, the NRCScontracted with Northwest Management, Inc(NMI), a private firm with extensive experience inland cover mapping and remote sensing. he landcover mapping method developed by NMI andtheir associates combines vegetation data with highresolution aerial photography, and high precisiondigital photography from representative groundlocations throughout Valley County.  Last summer, with participation from private

landowners and public land managers, crewsworking for NMI collected land cover vegetationdata from sites representing sage grouse habitat inValley County.  NMI’s team of mapping specialists have used thisinformation, along with aerial photos and satelliteimagery, to produce draft maps of vegetation covertypes. hese maps characterize sage grouse habitatin the areas studied, and will not be used for anypurpose other than sage grouse conservation work

by participating landowners and land managers.  Before NWI field crews conduct field work thissummer, the public is invited to a meeting sponsoredby the Valley County NRCS to meet NRCS and BLMspecialists, and members of the NMI team to learnmore about this project and provide their input onthe mapping products being developed.  he meeting will be held at the USDA ServiceCenter 54059 US Hwy 2 W Glasgow Montana onMay 12, 2016 at 1 pm.       According to a survey by the children’s advocacygroup Common Sense Media, “internet addiction”could be even worse than previously thought. Te SanFrancisco-based organization released a study as thefirst to explore parents’ and teens’ growing dependenceon the tech gadgets that are supposed to empower us.  (Watched a kid run into a power pole behind BSCentral the other day while walking and texting orwhatever she was doing on her phone... gotta admit itwas hilarious seems how she wasn’t hurt, just extremelyembarrassed.)  Nearly 59 percent of parents think their teens areaddicted to their cellphones, tablets or laptops — 50percent of teens agree — and 27 percent of parentsbelieve they themselves are addicted. Te survey polled620 parents and 620 teens.

And the survey suggests this behavior is causingfriction between parents and children. About one-thirdof both parents and teens say they argue daily aboutdevice use; only 21 percent of parents and 30 percent ofkids say that they never argue about it.  It’s not just the amount of screen time, but the dull-eyed frequency with which people consult their screensthat’s troubling. According to the survey, 78 percent ofteens and 69 percent of parents check their devices atleast hourly, and 72 percent of teens and 48 percent ofparents feel the need to immediately respond to text

messages.  “Internet addiction,” which encompasses excessiveand compulsive tech-related behaviors that producenegative outcomes, isn’t a defined psychologicaldisorder. But it has many parents concerned.  Te Common Sense poll conducted last fall foundteens spend an average of nine hours daily, and pre-adolescents spend six hours daily, on entertainmentmedia. Tose figures don’t include time spent doinghomework.

In the new survey, 77 percent of parents say that, atleast a few times every week, their teens get distractedby devices and don’t pay attention to their parents.Similarly, 41 percent of teens say the devices sometimescause their parents to be inattentive.  And while warnings abound against using phoneswhile driving, adults aren’t setting a very good example.More than half of parents admit to checking their mobiledevices while driving, and more than half of teens seethat behavior.  Te Common Sense poll was conducted by phone

from Februray 16th through March 14th. It surveyed1,240 people, half children ages 12 to 18 and the otherhalf one of their parents, both owning a mobile deviceTe survey has a margin of error of plus or minus fourpercent.  How families can balance media:  Common Sense Media suggests ways that parentsteachers and supportive adults can help establish a

healthy and productive balance in media use:• Declare tech-free zones and times• Check ratings of media and technology • alk about what your kids are seeing, reading and

playing; encourage kids to consider the mediamessage

    • Help kids understand the effects of multitaskinghelping kids stay focused will strengthen interpersonalskills and academic performance

    • Walk the walk: Lead by example and put away devices

while driving, at mealtimes and during family time• Seek expert help: If your kids’ use of media and

technology is harming their mental health ordisrupting relationships, contact a health careprovider or other professional for advice
