"Voice of Experience Day" Proclaimed rir HEY are unrolling the welcome mat for I. the Voice of Experience in Liberty, Mis- souri, home of William Jewell College, where on May 28, the radio oracle familiar to CBS listeners delivers the commencement address, gets an honorary LL. D. and is initiated into a social fraternity.

Mayor C. S. Murray of Liberty has issued a proclamation which, stripped of its where - ases and phraseology, sets aside commence- ment day at William Jewell as "Voice of Experience Day," commands that the Voice, Marion Sayle Taylor, an undergraduate of twenty-five years ago, be given the city's key and orders that flags be displayed on all public buildings. The proclamation also pro- vides that welcoming banners be stretched across streets. An unusual feature of the day for the Voice will be that his father will travel from California to Liberty to be pres- ent at the various ceremonies.

America's Radio Suburbs O THE NATIONAL ADVERTISER, every radio station that offers a definite and dependable service is of importance. In the distribution of manufactured products, every community, whether large or small, is a sales field and is not

discriminated against if dependable facilities are available, together with definite data regarding those facilities.

Advertisers know that radio is the most responsive and flexible of all advertising mediums, but must be convinced of the way in which their copy will be handled.

To the national advertiser the country is a vast assemblage of neighborhoods. New Rochelle, N. Y., is a radio suburb of San Francisco or Seattle. Apples from Oregon, raisins from Fresno, oranges from Pomona- all are neighborhood products to the Smiths of Wilkesbarre, or the Browns of Boston.

By the same token, cotton from Carolina,

* *

tobacco from Virginia, or cheese from Wis- consin are equally familiar to Pacific Coast radio neighborhoods.

The effective publicizing of Pacific Coast radio, collectively and unitedly, is an ele- mentary necessity for the development of revenue, national prestige and success, in ratio to the existing opportunity.

*

INCE 1922, BROADCAST WEEKLY has been published without interruption in behalf of Pacific Coast radio stations and their listeners. In its files will be found the inspiring story of radio's developments on the West Coast.

BROADCAST WEEKLY, in an impressive 14 -weeks campaign, is preparing a series of feature articles, each devoted to a single station or associated group of stations. Data is presented in these articles that cannot be embodied in trade paper or other advertising.

TLLUSTRATED fully, with facts about .iL programs, artists, audiences and field of service, each article covers completely the station picture in line with what the adver- tiser wants to know.

These feature articles will be supplemented every week by follow-up news, and in the fourteenth week of the campaign will be re- viewed, with maps, coverage data and other essential information.

During this fourteen -week period, a copy

of each week's issue will reach every adver- tising agency executive buying radio time, in the United States. Each of the fourteen issues will also be placed upon the desks of every important sponsor and radio executive in the country.

Through the pages of BROADCAST WEEKLY, over a fourteen -week period, will be told the complete story of progressive Pacific Coast radio stations, their facilities, personnel and field of service to national advertisers.

B ROADCAST WEEKLY

Vol. XIV San Francisco, California, May 25, 1935 No. 21

News and Comment San Diego on the Air

Wednesday, May 29, at 11:55 a. m. ® over CBS, a blast from the whistle of the new giant French liner "Normandie" will start the historic mission bell at San Diego ringing for the first time in 400 years. Until 12:30 CBS will present a "preview" of the California -Pacific International Exposi- tion. The broadcast from the "Normandie" spans an ocean, a continent and four cen- turies, when the liner's whistle releases a radio impulse that starts the San Diego Mis- sion bell tolling as it did hundreds of years ago, when the Padre called the Indians in from their work in the fields.

The ringing of the bell at 11:55 a. m. will be a signal for musicians in the Exposition grounds to begin playing, for the raising of flags and starting of gorgeous fountains. It also opens what promises to be a broadcast of unusual interest, from the Palace of Science, tallest of exhibit structures, present- ing a word picture of the Exposition.

The Spanish Village will be described, with its architecture of Old Spain, olive groves, lively bazaar, patio cafe and other features. CBS will also describe the exact copy of an early western town, complete with "bold bad men," dance hall girls, stage coach, etc., not to forget the sheriff's office and jail.

The broadcast then proceeds from the Ford Bowl, where daily symphony and band concerts, ballets and stage productions will be given.

The Cafe of theWorld next will engage the listeners' attention. This is one of the Fair's brightest spots, where visitors from all coun- tries may find their native dishes on the menu. CBS will also broadcast from the Fair grounds at the formal opening Wednes- day evening, May 29; the time to be an- nounced.

As announced in last week's BROADCAST

WEEKLY, NBC has planned an elaborate series of Exposition broadcasts, beginning May 29, the day of the formal opening. Watch for announcements of special day by day Exposition broadcasts.

Eddie Cantor to Return in Fall on CBS

Eddie Cantor, who has established new popularity records during his Sunday night programs over the Columbia network, will return next fall in a new CBS series, again featured with Dave Rubinoff, violinist -con- ductor, associated with Cantor during the past three years; Ted Husing and "Parky- akakas," the Greek Dialectician.

Cantor is making a picture in Hollywood tentatively titled "Dreamland," an adapta- tion from one of Clarence Buddington Kel- land's stories, the locale of which will be an amusement park.

ORNELIA OTIS SKINNER, the distinguished American actress and monologist, will

'make her debut as the star of a new radio dramatic series on Sunday, June 2. She will be heard weekly thereafter over an NBC nation-wide network at 7:15 p. m., P. S. T.

The repertoire from which she will draw for her radio presentations includes a wide range of character portrayals from fictional and historical literature. Miss Skinner suc- ceeds Walter Winchell. The actress will continue on the program for the summer.

So -o -o -o -o What? Ed Wynn had his first ride on a stream-

lined train recently when the Comet set a new record on the run from New Haven, Conn., to Boston, Mass., reaching a high speed of 110 miles per hour. The NBC comedian, asked what he thought of the Comet's speed, replied, "The only thing I know of that ever went faster was last week's check.

"You know," he continued, "they had to build streamlined trains so that they could beat these new streamlined cars to the rail- road crossings."

Ray Noble, English band leader, has just signed a contract with Paramount Pictures to appear in their vehicle, "The Big Broad- cast." He will start production in June.

Radio Fans Have New Hobby The latest hobby among radio enthusiasts

is collecting stamp -photos of radio artists. which many local radio stations have been sending out upon request. These little two - by -three photos are pasted in albums just as one collects postage stamps, and the fad is rapidly rivaling that of stamp collecting. KNX recently offered to send a stamp -photo of one of its artists, and after receiving al- most 3,500 requests for the picture in less than two weeks, decided to run a series on its artists. The inimitable Frank Watanabe is the present favorite among photo col- lectors, as evidenced by the fact that more than two thousand requests for pictures have come into KNX in a period of two weeks.

King Now the Curly Haired Tenor at KNX

Larry King, KNX tenor, set feminine hearts fluttering when he walked into the KNX studios today, for overnight his usu- ally smooth blond hair had become a mass of lovely curls. In spite of the fact that it looks very, very much like the things they call "permanents," King sticks to his story- it was an electric machine for scalp treat- ment. He is sticking to it pretty hard-in fact, "methinks he doth protest too much."

Mystery Writer Learns About Radio from Joe

Joseph Henry Jackson, NBC book critic, did not realize what a far-flung audience listens to his Sunday night Reader's Guide programs until his recent interview with Erle Stanley Gardner, noted mystery writer.

"Your radio fans come from the darndest places," Gardner wrote him a day or so after the interview. "The chap who handles the laundry in San Francisco dropped in to tell me lie hadn't missed a Reader's Guide pro-

gram for years ... a letter from friends in Vancouver said the program carne in swell . . . a man who had been trying to reach me on business rang up, saying he had learned I was in San Francisco because one of his salesmen had heard me on the radio with you . . . some guy in the Mojave Desert. who was listening in, wants to sell me an interest in a gold mine . . . a friend whom I haven't seen for twenty years writes a letter of congratulation . a girl writes to say how much she enjoyed the broadcast and that all of her friends were enthusiastic about it-and there you are. Brother, when you talk they sure listen!"

Nebraska Town Won't Dedicate Post Office Without Etting

For years the citizens of David City, Ne- braska, have wanted a new post office. Now they have one, but they cannot dedicate it.

For David City would never think of dedi- cating a new post office building without its most illustrious daughter present. And Ruth Etting cannot get back to David City until July.

Miss Etting accordingly has consulted her schedule and discovered that she can visit David City in July, on her way from New York to Hollywood to make a new motion picture. As soon as she sets the definite date, invitations for the dedication will be sent to postal officials in Washington and all the inhabitants of David City.

The picture which Miss Etting is to make may be her last. She has announced that she will retire at the end of the present year and take a trip around the world. By that time, however, David City's new post office will be dedicated.

Although his contract with his sponsors has terminated for the spring, Edwin C. Hill will probably continue to be heard via the sustain- ing route.

Phoithboinders Are Peachy! The radio public is asking that Colonel

Stoopnagle and Budd change the name of their product, "phoithboinders," to something easier to pronounce. The Colonel refuses. "Stoopnagle and Budd phoithboinders," he explains, "started out as sphoithboinders. But somebody tore the top off of one and sent it in, so now it's phoithboinders. I fore- see the day when it will become hoithboin- ders, then oithboinders, then ithboinders, but we stop at that. Ithboinders are the tops."

Stoopnagle and Budd have devised a Phoithboinder cocktail. The ingredients: One-half part two-thirds. Two-thirds part one-half. Pour over nothing. Serve in tall Phoithbinder. Indorsed by the Shadow.

Radio artists have their pet economies. Bing Crosby, for instance, won't buy new hats, preferring the battered and antiquated chapeaux. Freddie Rich accumulates old golf balls, while Fred Waring hoards blotters which he could never possibly use up even if he wrote "Anthony Adverse" over again in pen and ink. Kate Smith saves pencils, even the stubby kind. Arnold Johnson won't part with old shoes, hoping he'll wear them out some day; while Phil Spitalny reverses this habit and for luck opens every new en- gagement with new brogues.

With CBS Folks Tom Waring's latest musical composition,

"Way Back Home," promises to enjoy one of the largest sheet music sales of any song of recent years. . . Radio fans are buying it to acquaint themselves with the meter of the lyrics before writing original choruses to the tune, as entries in a contest being conducted by the sponsor of Fred Waring's Pennsyl- vanians.

When Ethel Merman goes to Hollywood in July to play a feature rôle in the new Eddie Cantor picture, tentatively titled "Dreamland," both Ted Husing and Al Goodman will follow. . . . Because Ethel's weekly Columbia broadcast "Rhythm at Eight," in which Husing and Goodman are featured, will originate thereafter from the filin capital.

Ralph Lombardo, California novelty singer, recently made his CBS debut with Horace Headt's Brigadiers by singing "The Little Grass Shack of Kealakekua" in five lan- guages --and pig Latin.

Vera Van's fox terrier, "Boy," recently posed for Robert B. Borton, famous for his portraits of animals, at the hobby show in New York.

Gertrude Niesen is memorizing a variety of musical rôles preparatory to appearing in several productions in the Municipal Theatre in St. Louis this summer. . . She is doing this in preference to broadcasting during the summer,

THE new Oriental star which was sud- denly eclipsed a few weeks ago is again shining brightly on 8.75 meg. Using the

ca 1 ZBW, this Chinese short wave trans - m tter is now heard every morning between 3 and 6:30 a. m., with an excellent program of classical and popular recordings. As previ- ously announced in this section, all announce- ments are made in English, the program being a direct relay of the Hongkong medium wave broadcasting station.

With the advent of football season into the sports world of Australia, the famous short- wave station 3LR has dropped its Friday evening race track commentaries and replaced them with a rapid-fire description of the cur- rent gridiron contests. The games may be heard on 9.58 meg. every Friday night be- tween 9:30 and 11:30 p. m.

And while on the subject of this Mel- bourne transmitter, it should perhaps be mentioned that the station is now effect- ing regular weekly relays of economic and political talks direct from the League of Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. These broadcasts may be heard on the Pacific Coast every Sunday night from 10:30 to 11:45 p. m. Many listeners report direct reception from the League station HBL on 9.57 meg.

The dual call and peculiar experimental transmissions of the Fiji Island short-wave station has been a source of confusion to lis- teners on the abbreviated wavelengths for some time. VPD is the broadcast call of "Radio Suva," and this call is used during regular scheduled transmissions between 9:30 and 10:30 p. m., daily. Each program begins with "Song of the Islands" and ends with "God Save the King," and all programs con- sist of recordings, except for occasional news items and announcements of interest.

At frequent intervals, tests are conducted on the same frequency of 13.07 meg., and it so happens that these tests may occur dur- ing the so-called regular broadcast period, thereby causing considerable confusion for listeners. During these tests, the interna- tional call sign VPIA is used, and the sta- tion announces as the Amalgamated Wire- less Australasia station of Suva. Records may be repeated over and over again, and at times the carrier may even go off the air.

Several powerful stations on the other side of the Pacific have been very active

during the past few weeks, and while these do not broadcast any programs in the true sense of the word, they do fur- nish the listener with some interesting voice transmissions.

Station VIZ3 of Rockbank, Victoria, Australia, is on the air almost every after- noon between 4 and 6:30 p. m., in con- tact with CJA of Montreal, Canada. VIZ3 operates on 11.49 meg., and CJA on 11.44 meg., and both are heard with excellent volume in this country.

Another very powerful phone is PLE of Bandoeng, which may be heard call- ing San Francisco at 4 p. m., and Tokio at 4:30 p. m. every week day. The recent attempts at international con-

tract bridge matches via short-wave have proved so successful that arrangements are being made for similar contests in the fu- ture. W2XAF of Schenectady, New York, and HJ1ABB of Barranquilla, Colombia, South America, managed to intermingle good and bad bidding and sprightly comment for three hands last Monday, May 20, the hands being dealt, as before, by station VK2ME of Sydney, Australia. The voices of the two women players were brought into the studio at W2XAF through a loud speaker, while a microphone was placed on the table between the two principal Schenectady players. Two "dummy" players in Schenectady and in Bar- ranquilla played the cards for the distant callers as decisions were made. There was none of the retraint that might have been associated with such a pioneering endeavor, and before very few minutes had passed, re- calcitrant players were being encouraged and hurried by their partners several thousand miles away in the usual domestic style.

Both the North and South American play- ers want to hold post-mortems, but these had to be postponed to a later date as time was pressing.

The first of these contests was effected at 3 p. m., but lately they have been heard on Monday evenings at 7 p. m., through W2XAF on 9.53 meg., and through HJ1ABB on 6.45 meg.

A new forestry chain in Oregon has now taken the air on about 2.275 meg. The key station is W7XAQ of Portland, and recep- tion is very strong at all times. The informal chats which frequently take place on these stations between 9 and 11 p. m. have proved very amusing to owners of all -wave sets.

The DX Corner V E9CS of Vancouver, Canada, has been on

the air almost every night during the past few weeks between 9 p. m. and midnight, and is sending an excellent signal to all parts of the Pacific states in spite of the midget power of only 2/ watts which is now in use. Tune for them on 6.07 meg.

* * *

WAE, a new experimental station, was heard on Sunday afternoon between 1 and 2 p. m., broadcasting test music on about 15.50 meg.

* * *

VK2ME of Sydney, Australia, has been conducing frequent tests on 10.52 meg. be- tween 10 p. m. and 1 a. m. This is the fre- quency which is usually used near 3 a. m. by the commercial phone station, VLK.

* * *

Reception from European stations is still improving. The English number six broad- casts through GSC is still best for Pacific Coast listeners, although considerable im- provement has been noted on the number one transmission through GSD on 11.75 meg., which commences at 8:30 p. m.

"Radio Coloniale" is now holding up fairly well until the sign -off at 9 p. m., and DJD continues to send a weak signal to this sec- tion of the country as late as 7:30 p. m. Al- though not announced in English, the other German broadcast through DJN on 9.54 meg. is usually heard with slightly better volume.

* * *

YV2RC of Caracas, Venezuela, is now in- stalling a new 1000 watt transmitter which will take the air before the first of June, and will inaugurate a number of special dedicatory programs to well-known radio clubs in this country. The same frequency of 6.11 meg., and the same time schedule of daily until 7 p. m. will be used.

* * *

YDA, the powerful Bandoeng transmitter of the N. I. R. O. M. chain in Java is still sending some excellent programs to this country between 2:30 and 7 a. m. on a fre- quency of 6.12 meg.

For Radio's First Lady of Smooth Synco- pation, we nominate Ethel Merman. Packing an abundant supply of pep and personality, she descends on a CBS microphone like a house afire every Sunday and the result is a half-hour of rhythm, both stormy and sweet. Ethel has come to the ether waves as star of a show called "Rhythm at Eight," but we hear it via KFRC at 4. We're conquered com- pletely. So give a listen, will you?

* * * NBC Presents a New Service. It's called

the Hostess Alarm Clock system and was inspired by Charles McAllister. One Satur- day afternoon recently, Mr. McAllister, had the time and the urge to hie himself home- wards for forty winks. But, according to the schedule, Charles McAllister was expected to report for a six o'clock rehearsal of "Gentle- men of the Jury." Furthermore, he is in- clined to oversleep. But every problem has a solution so . the weary Charles went home to sleep. At 5:30 p. m., his telephone rang. "Good evening," said a feminine voice, in the sweetest hostess manner, "NBC-ing you!" (P. S. New uses for the Hostess Alarm Clock are being discovered daily.)

Shortwaves and Remote Rumors: Jack Meakin! NBC's prize pianist, was finally caught by the camera. So now what will be- come of that much -used pencil sketch. In the Southland is Organist Charles Runyon, who's spending his two weeks peddling tunes by Runyon . Harry, the Stanton has re- ceived the chain letter to end all chain let- ters. It's a telegram, with ten dollars as the monetary investment. We haven't learned whether or not Harry "had the faith his friend had." . .. So hold the train for another Southbound passenger. Meaning your col- umnist. who intends to write next week's epi- sode under a Hollywood date line. In spite of the fact that the road to Hollywood is paved with good intentions!

phone debut that was unpremeditated and most unintentional. It concerns Louise Taber, who delves into California history for the sake of one of KYA's best bets. The friendly voiced Miss Taber celebrates her 500th broadcast this week. Which is cause enough to go back to the beginning. Miss Taber, with her wealth of personal information about early California, came to radio five years ago as a continuity writer for Lee Roberts. An aged pioneer was to be interviewed by Mr. Roberts. So, Miss Miss Taber, as script author, spent several hours with the old gentleman. She even im- personated Mr. Roberts, rehearsing the broadcast as it would finally be presented. Came rehearsal time. The guest star could not accustom himself to appearing sans Louise Taber. At last-just one minute be- fore the red light flashed-Mr. Roberts de- cided that his author should conduct the in- terview. And Louise Taber, in spite of her refusals and insistence that she'd never been on the air before and would ruin everything, was literally shoved into a radio debut.

The California Family, over KROW, has become one of the station's features in the short time it has been on the air. Fine plots and a wonderful cast are responsible. Norman Field is to be complimented upon his fine job of producing.

A little boy asked Joe Cook of "Circus Night in Silvertown," for three pictures of the comedian. "Why three pictures?" Joe asked. "Won't one be enough?" "No, sir," the little boy answered. "My ma threw a flatiron at my pop and my pop says it'll take three pic- tures to cover the hole in the wall."

Not "Haft" Bad, Eh What?

Wilton Haff, KOMO-KJR announcer, art- ist, and jack-of-all-trades, enjoys life in gen- eral and lives to disprove the adage: "The moment you are born you are done for."

Haff, who is blessed with a generous por- tion of the well-known but elusive "it," has travelled Europe, South America, and the Far East, flown, sold, run a grocery store, worked in Montana mines, on Seattle news- papers, at political conventions, speaks Italian and Spanish and numerous dialects. His nickname is "Smokey," his wife's "Smudge," but "Soot" was voted down as a nickname for young Wilton, Jr., because the Haffs didn't want another blot on the family es- cutcheon.
