Be a Buddy Family Coordinator

SHA is looking for someone to take over as the Buddy Family Coordinator. The Buddy Family Coordinator matches up new families with seasoned school families to help them feel welcome. You would be trained and transitioned this summer to take over in the 2020-2021 year. It's a great way to meet families and earn service hours. Call, text or email Jen-nifer Ellis at [email protected] or (602) 619-2786 to learn more.

Our Catholic Identity This page is a reminder that we are a Roman Catholic school and we are all called to promote the values of our faith and traditions.

From the time of Jesus’s ascension into heaven, Mary and the apostles gathered

together in the upper room, to pray for the coming of the Holy Spirit. This nine day

period leading up to Pentecost was the very first novena! Your family could observe

this novena in various ways – going to daily Mass each day for the duration, praying to

the Holy Spirit as a family, talking about a gift or fruit of the Holy Spirit each day, etc.

See below for a few novena options. I pray that you all have a very blessed summer,

and I look forward to being with the children in the atrium again when we get back to

school!

Sincerely,

Miss Friedrich

Novena Prayer

[from EWTN - https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/devotions/novena-to-the-holy-

spirit-13406]

O Holy Spirit, O my God, I adore Thee, and acknowledge, here in Thy divine presence,

that I am nothing and can do nothing without Thee. Come, great Paraclete, Thou father of the poor, Thou

comforter the best, fulfil the promise of our blessed Savior, Who would not leave us orphans, and come into

the mind and the heart of Thy poor, unworthy creature, as Thou didst descend on the sacred day of Pentecost

on the holy Mother of Jesus and on His first disciples. Grant that I may participate in those gifts which Thou

didst communicate to them so wonderfully, and with so much mercy and generosity. Take from my heart

whatever is not pleasing to Thee, and make of it a worthy dwelling-place for Thyself. Illumine my mind, that

I may see and understand the things that are for my eternal good. Inflame my heart with pure love of Thee,

that I may be cleansed from the dross of all inordinate attachments, and that my whole life may be hidden

with Jesus in God. Strengthen my will, that I may be made conformable to Thy divine will, and be guided by

Thy holy inspirations. Aid me by Thy grace to practice the divine lessons of humility, poverty, obedience, and

contempt of the world, which Jesus taught us in His mortal life.

Oh, rend the heavens, and come down, consoling Spirit! that inspired and encouraged by Thee, I may

faithfully comply with the duties of my state, carry my daily cross most patiently, and endeavor to accomplish

the divine will with the utmost perfection. Spirit of love! Spirit of purity! Spirit of peace! Sanctify my soul

more and more, and give me that heavenly peace which the world cannot give. Bless our Holy Father the

Pope, bless the Church, bless our bishops, our priests, all Religious Orders, and all the faithful, that they may

be filled with the spirit of Christ and labor earnestly for the spread of His kingdom.

O Holy Spirit, Thou Giver of every good and perfect gift, grant me, I beseech Thee, the intentions of this

novena. May Thy will be done in me and through me. Mayest Thou be praised and glorified forevermore!

Amen.

From the Health Office…

School is ending and summertime is here! Did you think you’d ever make it? Be proud of what you have accomplished in the last 8 weeks. I’m sure you are all looking forward to a break this summer. Your kids will want to be outside and enjoy the sun-shine and the water. Here are some tips from the American Can-cer Society to stay safe in the sun, and from the American Red Cross to stay safe in the water.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO:

Limit sun exposure: Peak sun hours are between 10am and 4pm, so try to limit the amount of sun exposure during this time.

Cover up: Use clothing to cover and protect your skin. Wear a hat to protect both your skin and your eyes.

Wear Sunglasses: Wear sunglasses that block 99%-100% of both UVA and UVB rays. When shopping for sunglasses, look for “UV absorption up to 400nm” or “Meets ANSI UV Require-ments”.

Use Sunscreen: The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) in sunscreen states how long the sunscreen will protect your skin from the sun. Choose sunscreen with minimum SPF 15, but SPF 30 or more is recommended.

Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply at least every 2 hours; more often if in the water.

Look for sunscreen that protects from UVA and UVB rays. UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn, but UVA rays also cause skin damage and wrinkles. And UVA rays will penetrate car windows so it’s important to be protected whether you are in direct sunlight or not.

Protect your children: Keep babies (younger than 6 months) out of direct sunlight, and cover up and protect with sunscreen, clothing and hats.

Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is important all of the time, but even more so in the summer months. You should drink ½ your body weight in ounces, of water every day, and even more when outside in the heat or when exercising. Dehydration can cause headache, dizziness, muscle cramping and fainting.

Swimming is extremely popular, good exercise and fun – but we all need to exercise caution. According to the CDC, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14.i Here are some things parents can do to keep their kids safe while swimming this summer:

Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.

Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.

Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water. Have young children or inexperi-enced swimmers wear approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

Maintain constant supervision. Designate at least one adult that is always keeping an eye on children, without distractions.

Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well. Enroll in age-appropriate Red Cross water orientation and learn-to-swim courses. If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate bar-riers. Many children who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.

If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.

Have appropriate equipment nearby, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit.

Know how and when to call 9-1-1 or the local emergency number

Stay safe, and I look forward to seeing your children back in August!
