We are being told by community leaders, politicians, public health officials and others that life as we knew it before Covid-19 may not be what we will return to when the pandemic is over. For many this is very disconcerting. Among the frustrations we have felt is the challenge of obtaining information and knowing if the information we are getting is accurate. It is not that anyone is being devious or untruthful. It is more a matter of the fluid nature of the situation. We have never had a pandemic like this before in our lifetime and we are learning about the virus every day. Doctors and researchers are working hard to determine the best treatments and we are all hopeful a vaccine will be developed as soon as possible. What about fear? There is lots of that going around and I would be lying to you if I said I was not nervous at times. We were not able to be together at Shepherd during Holy Week! We were not together at church for Easter! We do not like these changes. Amid all the changes we have been experiencing, there is one constant. God has not changed. God’s love for us has not changed! The writer to the Hebrews makes this point clear in pointing out God confirmed His promises with an oath. A promise to never forsake His children who put their love, trust, and hope in Him. God made this promise to Abraham when He established His covenant with Israel and God has made good on His oath to this very day. God has chosen us to be His people, the new Zion, and God has promised never to forsake His children. When Can We Worship Together Again? Most, if not all, members have asked when we can worship together again at church. The Elders and Pastors desire greatly to join in worship again. However, we also desire to be as safe as possible when considering gathering together or using our facilities. We will be following government and state health guidelines with added caution as our membership includes children and the elderly. For the month of May, we will continue to have online worship, devotions, Bible studies, and meetings. We will also continue serving Communion in small individual and family groups by appointment only. Please contact either Pastor Stoltenow or Pastor Zillinger to schedule. Whenever guidelines change the Elders will meet to see how we may comply with the highest confidence of safety for our members and guests. Fear not! Jesus is still with us even in this season of social isolation and virus concern. Alleluia, Christ is Risen!

Mission Team Update Missionaries across the globe need our fervent prayers more than ever. Many of them are quarantined and not able to provide fully to the people most in need. Some are providing online support to their students, their congregations and their staff, while others cannot provide online support due to the poverty in their region. Many of the missionaries highlight how the COVID pandemic has affected them. May Missionary of the Month Iantha Scheiwe, Hong Kong - Mission of Christ Network In March, Iantha wrote in her newsletter: “One of the problems I run into as a missionary is that I sometimes compartmentalize the various aspects of ministry in which I participate. I have specific roles that I serve for the Mission of Christ Network team. They include directing the Concordia Mission Institute training for missionaries and Field Lead for some of our mission partners serving in Asia. I focus my newsletter updates on these activities because I feel that my prayer partners are somehow especially supporting those ministry aspects. I teach various groups during the week. Some are outreach groups of students who are not Christian and some are discipleship groups. I am a mother and the wife of a pastor. “How do I separate the Christian nurturing of my children and my prayerful support of congregational ministry, including Sunday School teacher and musician, from my ‘official’ roles with MCN? I typically do not write about congregational ministry roles in my newsletters because those are things that I would do as a member anyway. Since this newsletter specifically touches on the idea of vocation, it is a good time for me to bring these all into a holistic combination of how God has called and placed me in Hong Kong at this time. This includes facilitating the Sunday School team. In this role I communicate with the teaching team and lead group opening for our community’s youngest people of faith. Each Sunday I have a group of 5-20 children who start with Luther’s Morning prayer song, talk together about Bible literacy, observe the color and architecture of the church and season, and learn a memory Bible verse song before being sent off to their age-level classrooms. I am thankful to sing or play piano for worship. Thanks be to God for the way he forms each of us as a unique ‘tool’ to meet the needs of witness, life together, and compassion where he has placed us. Thanks be to God for each of you who prayerfully partner with me, my family, and this community in sharing the Gospel here in Hong Kong and beyond.” Iantha and her family continue to be healthy during the Corona Virus crisis. There was disruption in Hong Kong prior to the pandemic due to the protests of the Chinese government, and the pandemic has necessitated quarantining of the residents; however, as the pandemic lessens, we hope calm prevails and Iantha can continue her mission work with the citizens of Hong Kong. Missionary Updates Rev. Joel and Clarion Fritsche - Dominican Republic Before the virus: January was filled with traveling. The regional team met in Belize in early January. While there, the team learned of the earthquakes in Puerto Rico, which set off a number of trips of missionaries heading there to support the team in their tremendous efforts of showing the Lord’s mercy. Shortly after, Joel travelled to the states, visiting Pacific Hills LCMS in Omaha, NE, followed by a few days at the CTSFW symposia in Ft. Wayne. On Joel’s way back to Santiago, Clarion made her way to Ft. Wayne for two weeks of intensive courses with the deaconess program. A few days later, Joel’s brother-in-law arrived with a group of eight from his congregation in Plano, TX. They have been steadfast supporters of the team’s work and wanted to get a firsthand look at mission and ministry in the Dominican Republic. February included hosting a youth event at the Pueblo Nuevo mission. Youth from the three Santiago missions got together with missionary kids, pastors, seminary students and other missionaries for Bible Study, games, food and fellowship. The turnout was fantastic. Then Corona Virus Hit: The seminary has gone completely online since March 18. The five residential students are sheltering in place in their dorm in Palmar Arriba. They set up a classroom in their study area where they meet for their classes. Professors and married students Zoom in for each class. The three married students and Mario, their Pueblo nuevo vicar, live in Cerro Alto where the missionaries live. Everyone is doing well, despite sheltering in place. The students are being formed as evangelists, that is church planting pastors. Normally they spend 10-15 hours a week outside of classes in the communities around

Mission Team Update - Continued from page 5 Alto where the missionaries live. Everyone is doing well, despite sheltering in place. The students are being formed as evangelists, that is, church planting pastors. Normally they spend 10-15 hours a week outside of classes in the communities around their missions. Since we can’t do local on-site ministry, the seminary students are assisting in the change to digital ministry. Each of them writes four devotions per week. Each works with an individual pastor to revise and prepare the devotions for distribution. This provides a multitude of devotional resources to share with all of our pastors around Latin America. On the church front, they have also gone completely digital. This has been invaluable as devotions and announcements are shared each day. They are keeping up with their members with regular “virtual” visits like phone calls and text messages. Additionally, they have done one round of food and medicine deliveries in the community. Deaconess Caitlin has done wonders keeping up with the needs of their members. Ray of Hope - Joe and Viya Stoltenow - Cambodia When they first closed their center, they managed to provide lunch to their street kids by delivering it to them from their truck. Now that Ray of Hope is closed, the street kids have lost two consistent meals a day and they can no longer interact with their friends. Health safety is poorly managed in the slums and health care for the families is even more limited now than ever. Due to the rapid increase of the virus, they had to suspend lunch deliveries. What Joe has been able to do recently is provide rice to the kids’ families. School has been suspended due to the virus, but Joe looks forward to the time when they can return to helping the street kids full time. Greg Yoder recently wrote about such efforts: “We are continuing to work with the leadership in Burkina Faso, Haiti and Zimbabwe on ways we can help during the Coronavirus outbreak, and we are excited to share some new information. Dr. Wilhelm Webber - Wittenberg As in other countries around the globe, Germany’s divine services are no longer public, but families gather and worship online. Bookstores are also closed to the public, as is the Old Latin School. No assembly with more than two persons are allowed, so a lot of virtual meetings are substituting for gatherings as they try to figure out where this is going. Rev. Wilhelm asks for prayers: • for Jesus Christ´s Gospel & Luther´s teaching. • as confessional landmark in the middle of Germany. • to help people in need. • to serve joyfully here - even though it´s presently hard

Ministry Opportunities Priscilla Circle serves meals for families after funerals and assists with on-campus wedding meals. If you are interested in being part of this circle as a helper or to bring food for these occasions, please contact Marge Duffy at 303-798-3343 or [email protected]. Loving Meals Ministry When someone in our Shepherd family has surgery or becomes ill, help with preparing meals may be needed. If you or someone you know could use this kind of help of small meals on a short-term basis, please contact the church office at 303-798-0711 and you will be contacted by one of our meal coordinators. Contemporary Service Altar Setup/Cleanup Team This setup/cleanup team takes turns preparing the altar for the Contemporary services by filling candles and setting out the altar ware on Sunday mornings. After the service, things get put away. It doesn’t take much time and there are no meetings to attend. To be a part of this team, please contact either Mary Powers at [email protected] or Luanne Reimer at [email protected]. The women of Ruth/Altar Circle prepare the chancel area in the Sanctuary for the traditional services. Communion preparations, changing paraments, filling candles with oil and vacuuming are just a few of the duties performed before services. On Communion Sundays, there is cleanup after the services. We get together for a short meeting and enjoy fellowship and devotion the third Tuesday of each month, October through May. We’re always looking for women to help with preparations and Communion cleanup. The work is shared among our members so it isn’t a big commitment of time. Even if you don’t want to come to the meetings, please consider assisting with Communion cleanup after the services. Contact Luanne Reimer through email at [email protected]. Used Eyeglasses Since June 2019, 28 pair of eyeglasses have been collected. The eyeglasses have been delivered to the Lions Club and will be distributed to those in need throughout the world. Since 2010, you have donated 1,422 pair of eyeglasses. THANK YOU! Used hearing aids are also collected and given to the Sertoma organization. Your contributions are a blessing to many!

What Kind of Man Would Receive the Care of a Stephen Minister? • A man like Adam

Who was cut from all that gave meaning to life and needed someone to remind him of God’s promise.

children develop gratefulness and appreciation? ANSWER: It should come as no surprise that many of our suburban kids lack these characteristics. Many of them have everything they want and never have had to wait for any of it. In our love for our children, and in our desire to give them good things (often things we never had), we often fail to give them a chance to develop the characteristics that come from a life of hard work, struggle, sacrifice, and postponed gratification. Gratitude, appreciation, and other-centeredness never emerge in the absence of want, suffering, and exposure to the hurts of life. In Philippians 4: 11-13, St. Paul says: “For I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” The good news is that we can help our children learn gratefulness and appreciation, but it takes commitment, hard work, imagination, and time. Some thoughts on what to do, and who to be: 1. Seek frequent opportunities to give to others in a hands-on way. These experiences are especially important to do as a family when the child is young. Volunteer in soup kitchens and nursing homes, attend mission trips and church work parties, visit prisons and juvenile facilities, sponsor children in developing countries, stop and talk with the Salvation Army bell ringers, etc. Use your imagination! Experiential learning has the best chance of changing children. 2. Don't let your children quit when they have made a commitment. Help them experience the satisfaction and accomplishment of "sticking it out." Empathize and commiserate, but don't let quitting become the easy out. 3. Provide the opportunity of long-term projects. Prepare them for a world where "instant gratification" is not always the norm. Being able to provide every material want for a child doesn't mean a parent should. 4. Don't habitually rescue your children from consequences. They will become morally bankrupt. Accountability molds godly behavior. 5. Don't take responsibility for your child's happiness.

Challenge your child to live with the attitude of Christ and happiness just might come along in the process. ("Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness." MT. 5:6) 6. Convince your children that these values are worthwhile by modeling them yourself. Let your children see the joy and satisfaction that living for others brings. Verbalize your contentment and gratitude in your prayers with your children. 7. Insist on commitment to God, family, school, friends, and work. ("Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself" MK 12:30,31). 8. Insist on living for others by self-sacrificial servanthood. ("The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve” MT 20:28). 9. Insist on perseverance in accomplishment in both activities and relationships. ("Let us run with perseverance the race that is marked out for us" HEB 12:1). 10. If you are really brave, pray for events in the life of your family that are real struggles, but also opportunities for great change. (You will be changed as much as your children!) The older your child is, the harder these things are to do. You must believe in their value, draw strength from your faith, and model the character of Christ. Ultimately, it is our relationship with Christ that can truly bless us with contentment, gratitude, and appreciation. lives, God’s love for us in Christ Jesus our Lord never changes and by this we are encouraged! The Hebrew writer states, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” I love the picture of an anchor on the bottom of the sea where a boat is firmly held in place. In these past weeks, the anchor holding us to a firm position is our Lord Jesus who calls us to bring our cares and concerns to Him and receive the comfort only He can provide. Our hope, a sure and certain guarantee, is found in Christ alone as He offered Himself as the final sacrifice for our sins. Jesus was the priest who offered the sacrifice and was Himself the very sacrifice offered. Therefore, the Hebrew author says of our anchored faith, “It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.” In this same vein, Peter in his first epistle says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in Heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:1-5. So, for a while, we may feel shaken and afraid. We might ask the question of God as to why this pandemic is happening world-wide. The devil wants us to become afraid and think we have no hope. Some folks have been laid-off or furloughed from work. Our businesses may be suffering, and the economic impact of the virus is threatening our livelihood. Some of us know people who have been sick and died from the virus. Why Lord? Why is this happening! Peter, again, has this to tell us, “In this (our salvation in Heaven) you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him: and even though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” 1 Peter 1:6-9. You see, amid changes and hardships, God is with us doing what He has always done. He is keeping His promises! We may not shake hands to greet each other as much as we used to, and I imagine we will all have a heightened sense of our personal spaces and if we have washed our hands. God, through our risen Lord Jesus, has made a promise to us on which He has made an oath never to forsake. God is unchangeable when it comes to His promises to love us and be with us no matter what happens during our lives. Coronavirus and Covid-19 do not change what God has done for us through Jesus. School News Thinking of Summer Camps? It almost seems too early, but now is the time to sign up. While a final decision won’t be made until the end of May, if approved, Camp Timberline will again be hosting their day camp, Outta Bounds, at Shepherd. Camp is currently scheduled to run the week of June 22-26. Their ministry puts on a week-long sports and activities day camp for kids (finished) Kindergarten through 6th grade. Outta Bounds is the on-the-road version of Camp Timberline and is $250 per camper. Registration fills up fast, so don’t wait! Registration is available on Shepherd’s website, shepherdhillschurch.org/, under the Connect tab. Along with campers, Camp Timberline is looking for host families for their staff for the week of June 21-26. Host families are asked to house 2-3 staff (college-age kids) and provide a continental breakfast and dinner. Five-six host families are needed. Please contact Jodie if you are interested in hosting by emailing her at: [email protected]. Vacation Bible School This Year Curious about our plans for VBS this summer? Our theme is appropriate for this time and situation. Watch for emails unveiling our plans. We know it will be smaller and postponed until July, but we will still need many volunteers. Remember, Jesus Pulls Us Through! Trust Jesus!

Youth Group Notes Shepherd of the Hills’ Spiritual Formation Plan encompasses your child's spiritual formation from the womb all the way to when they leave the nest after high school. It is age appropriate and designed to assist your children to mature as Lutheran Christians so they may take a joyful stand for Christ. Xtreme 7th and 8th graders also participate in Koinonia, a mentoring program, every second Sunday from 4-6 pm with the SHYP kids. SHYP - Shepherd of the Hills Young People (High School) meets for Bible study in the youth room every Sunday at 9:15 am. SHYP also meets every Sunday from 4-6 pm for Bible study, games, group building, and food!
