They voiced concern that the version available on the City website and presented to the Commission for a vote did not include the most recent edits by or responses to homeowners’ or Commission members’ comments. After much discussion, the Commission postponed the vote until their June 6 meeting. A link to a version of the Guidelines is available on the Monterey Park/VM 5/5a website for your review (see link below). Your newsletter editors have been through the proposed Guidelines twice, most recently the week of April 22. Those edits, comments, and questions were presented at the April 26 meeting with Steve Venker and the Villa Monterey Guidelines review committee (the committee of VM HOA representatives working with Venker on the Guidelines for the last 2 years). This meeting was to prepare for the May 2 Commission meeting, at which this vote was on the agenda. We (your editors) have also gone through the version recently linked on the VM 5/5a website; some but not all edits we proposed on April 26 are reflected, but questions and comments we raised have not been addressed. At the Commission meetings citizens each have 3 minutes to speak without comment by the Commissioners. During the Commission discussion, homeowners are not allowed to speak or ask further questions. We have several questions: •Did members of the Commission see these edits, comments, and questions or those of other homeowners? What version of the Guidelines were they being asked to vote on? •Will members of the Commission receive a current version for their review prior to the June 6 proposed vote? •Will either Venker or the Commission address the questions and comments brought up by homeowners prior to the June 6 proposed vote? What Can you do? Please review the proposed Guidelines. Watch your emails for a notice of the June 6 meeting. Plan to attend the meeting to voice your comments or questions to this very important issue that affects the future of your home. Take ownership for what happens to your home and neighborhood. At the May 2 Historic Preservation Commission meeting, several homeowners requested that the Commission delay voting on the proposed Historic Guidelines for Villa Monterey. They voiced concern that the version available on the City website and presented to the Commission for a vote did not include the most recent edits by or responses to homeowners’ or Commission members’ comments. After much discussion, the Commission postponed the vote until their June 6 meeting. A link to a version of the Guidelines is available on the Monterey Park/VM 5/5a website for your

review (see link below). Direct comments and questions to Steve Venker, Historic Officer ([email protected]), or to Craig Sjodin, ([email protected]), your HOA president and member of the Villa Monterey Guidelines review committee.

Report BY JOAN HUNSINGER

Don’t feed the birds When you feed birds you are also feeding roof rats and nuisance pest birds such as grackles, pigeons, starlings, sparrows and crows. Not indigenous to Arizona, pest birds harm native birds like cactus wrens, finches, and cardinals. Pest birds clog roof drains with their feces and nests. Their droppings will eat at the finish of your car and reduce the life of your roof by 20% or more. Bird feces contain over 60 different diseases and 40 different parasites that could be passed to you, your loved ones, or pets.

—Thanks to Val Bennet and the VM1 newsletter for reminding us.

Weed Your HOA Compliance committee has requested that you take another weeding pass of your yards. Don’t forget the sidewalk and driveway cracks. If you are a winter resident, please make arrangements to have your yards cared for while you are gone. If you do not, the HOA will make arrangements to have your yard cared for and charge you a surcharge on top of the cost of care.

Trim your palm tree(s) It is that time of year again to get your palm trees trimmed. The HOA will take the responsibility to get the HOA trees trimmed. Diego Sales will be trimming again this year. However, homeowners—whether year round or winter residents— are responsible to negotiate and make arrangements for trimming the palm trees on their own property. They can contact Diego Sales or use whomever they choose. Be careful not to trim too early, or these pods will grow back and must be trimmed again.Trees must be trimmed by July 15. If you do not trim your trees, the HOA will have them trimmed and charge you a surcharge on top of the trimming cost.

Fix your lampposts Homeowners are responsible for the maintenance of their lampposts. The HOA will take care of the bulbs and sensors, but the painting and maintenance of the post and toppers are up to individual homeowners. If you are missing a topper, or if it needs replacement, please contact the HOA Board for the correct topper to purchase. Unlike other VM HOAs, in VM 5/5a all lampposts are the same to make our neighborhood more cohesive.

Library etiquette Ann Lane, the contact person for the Library committee, reminds everyone to place books on the table in the library when you return them. Please do not shelve the books and interrupt her system for tracking titles.

Pick up after your pets Please don't leave their deposits for your neighbors to clean up. When you pick up, don't leave the bags in neighbors’ yards, driveways, sidewalks, or garbage or recycling bins.

Ways to Be a Good Neighbor:

Ramada reminders Reservations: Just a reminder that reservations for use of the Ramada must be made through Gayle Sjodin, contact person for the Ramada Interior and Reservations Committee. Please call Gayle so she can put it on her calendar.

Recycle bins. Please use the recycle bins at the Ramada just as you would the recycle bins at your own home. Do not put food waste or trash in the recycle bins. Recently, Sue Carey had the pleasant task of picking garbage and food waste out of and cleaning the recycle bin before it could be put out on the curb for pick up. Yuk!! The recycle bins are clearly marked with the recycle symbol.

2019 Villa Monterey 5/5a Directory

See you in September

Although Monterey Moments will take a brief summer hiatus, your newsletter editors will be busy planning future issues while tracking late-breaking news. —Mike & Patti

According to Wikipedia: ”See You in September" is a song written by Sid Wayne and Sherman Edwards. The song was first recorded by the Pittsburgh vocal group The Tempos. This first version peaked at number 23 in the summer of 1959. The most popular version of "See You In September" was the version by The Happenings in 1966, when it reached number three.

The 2019-2020 directory has been delivered; however, look for an email with a few updates.

If you would like a second copy of the directory, the board has determined that the cost of any additional copies will be $1.00 each. Computerized versions are also available; please contact Craig Sjodin.
