RATHMICHAEL PARISH

NEWSLETTER

www.rathmichael.dublin.anglican.org

Dear Parishioners and other friends, May 2018

I have served in Rathmichael under the leadership of four Archbishops.

Referring to the 8th

Amendment in The Irish Times, former archbishop of Dublin John Neill said “the issue of

abortion should not be dealt with within the Constitution” and that the Church of Ireland’s “agreed position was

always that the questions surrounding abortion should be addressed by legislation and not by constitutional

provision”.

He continued in a letter to the Church of Ireland Gazette that as “previously advocated by the Church of Ireland”

the legislature “ is the proper context in which to provide a legal framework surrounding abortion” .

On the airwaves, print media and lamp posts, the anticipated strong and blunt positions have been taken up and

that dreaded term “sides” is thrown around.

To Google ‘Abortion Clinics UK’ will bring up an array of warm and welcoming sites which make the process all

easy and caring. However, I have a doctor friend who found it all too much during her internship in Inverness with

the list of ‘STOPs’ morning and afternoon day after day in the hospital where she worked.

But then, I have two wonderful daughters, who if God forbid they were assaulted resulting in pregnancy by some

brute, I would do what I feel is pastorally fitting when we weigh up our daughter’s reasoned wishes. Whatever her

decision may be, it would be done.

There is sore irony in noting how ‘Unwanted children’ in the past were so mistreated by institutions which now are

strident in advocating protection of the unborn.

Situations differ and the Constitution is unyielding. Politicians/legalisation adjust to the people’s wishes over time.

That is democracy.

I found Archbishop John Neill to be always crystal clear in expression and prayerfully pastoral and deeply caring in

his ministry.

Yours as ever, as I flex and stretch to find and live St. Paul’s ‘the more excellent way’ with God’s help.

Fred

Rathmichael Parish National School Various shows were held led by both Naomi Clarkson, our music teacher and the teachers. She is a great addition to our school, encouraging talents which may be hidden. 5

th and 6

th class performed songs

from musicals, 3rd

class performed songs from Disney. These were put on after school in the early evening to facilitate parents.

They achieve a great sense of self confidence and it builds on their self esteem. Many solo-ists appeared which were astounding. The shows were performed for the school as well thus encour-aging some of the younger children in the future.

Seachtain na Gaeilge turned into Mí na Gaeilge. This was led by Aoife McMurdock our 1

st Class teacher. She is a Gaelgóir and as such encourages our teach-

ers and pupils. She gives of her time at lunch to teach Irish Dancing for our concert. The school created their own Irish books at each class level which were judged outside of the school. They have an Irish vocabulary wall displayed in the concourse. Mé Fein books are also on display. A concert was held where each class performed either a dance, song or poem in Irish for the rest of the school. Individuals did Irish dancing, played the tin whistle and piano. Go raibh maith agat Mrs McMurdock. Niall de Burca came in to read to the children. He is an Irish author and entertained the children and staff with his antics. It was great fun and gave the children a real love for the English language. He left us with CDs of his stories and I have had many requests for him to return! The PTA held a cake sale for all which was a great fundraiser for the school. Our healthy eating policy went out the window as everyone indulged and had some fun. Many thanks PTA for all your hard work. It is always worthwhile.

Caroline Senior, Principal.

The Archbishop of Dublin, The Most Reverend Michael Jackson, the Rector and Youth Worker, Jonathan Byford (far right) together with Christopher Knatchbull, Gordon Bernon, Isaac Garland, Joseph Walsh, Aidan O’Brien and Amber Desigar, following their Confirmation on Sunday 14th April in Rathmichael Parish Church.

Dear Parishioners, As you are aware there was a changing in the guard in the Fete Committee and I would like to thank Mark, Anne, Frank and Peter for all their hard work over the years. They have not gone too far as they signed up for other jobs in this year’s Fete! Also a big thank you to the new team taking over and let’s hope this and the future Fetes live up to the standards already set. We also need “manpower and womanpower” for every stall. Please let us know if you are available to help one of our Stall Managers. We especially need support during the week of the Fete with sorting and stacking etc. Please consider giving us one or two nights during that week. We need people to set every-thing up the day before the Fete and of course clearing everything up afterwards. There are many other ways to help: donations of raffle prizes, help with publicity car park supervision making jam or baking erecting signs, etc. As always we need donations of goods and it is never too early to start putting things aside for the Fete. Perhaps you may be able to grow some plants to donate to our plant stall or maybe you can begin plan-ning for some jam making during the summer. Sponsors and Donors – The cost of running our Fete is substantial as we have to hire in tents / table and equipment, purchase food & supplies etc. We need help with these costs so please contact any Fete Committee member if you are in a position to provide sponsorship or make a financial donation to sup-port Rathmichael Fete. We are going to put our sponsors names around the school for all to see. On behalf of the committee I would like to thank you all in advance for your help and hard work in running the Fete in 2018.
