May 2017 Monthly Catalogue Welcome to the May 2017 edition of the NHBS Monthly Catalogue, which lists all new titles added to our website in the last month. We have a strong line-up of bird books to announce this month. First off, two translations of important books: Waders of Europe: A Photographic Guide (due July) was originally published in Danish, and Winter Birds by Lars Jonsson (due October) in Swedish. Bloomsbury is currently preparing English translations of both. Lynx has just finalised details on Birds of Eastern Polynesia: A Biogeographic Atlas (due July), while Italian raptor specialist Giovanni Leonardi is about to publish Behavioural Ecology of Western Palearctic Falcons of which we are expecting stock very soon. On the other side of the Atlantic, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has announced Birds of Prey: Hawks, Eagles, Falcons, and Vultures of North America for June this year. There is also a number of interesting titles on fishes in the planning. Cambridge University Press has just announced Deep-Sea Fishes: Biology, Diversity, Ecology and Fisheries (due July), and Brill announced International Law of Sharks: Obstacles, Options and Opportunities (due May), which is likely the only recent book on environmental law as applied to shark conservation. Yale University Press revealed Fishing: How the Sea Fed Civilization (due October), by noted archaeologist Brian M. Fagan. Going by his other books, this will likely be a very interesting blend of archaeology and environmental history and I hope to report on that more nearer the time. Staying underwater for one more moment then, there are two excellent books lined up on marine mammals: Deep Thinkers: An Exploration of Intelligence in Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises (due October) by Ivy Press, and The Rise of Marine Mammals: 50 Million Years of Evolution (due October) by Johns Hopkins University Press. The latter follows a string of similarly titled books from this press over the years, looking at major taxonomic groups and how they arose. Other important books on mammals include Bonobos: Unique in Mind, Brain, and Behavior (due June) from Oxford University Press, and Wolf Nation: The Life, Death, and Return of Wild American Wolves (due May) from Da Capo Press, which tells the 300-year history of wild wolves in America. For entomologists, we similarly have a range of interesting books. We have just received stock of Ants of Southern Africa: The Ant Book for All, which is an unbelievably well-illustrated guide. We have not seen anything quite as thorough as this before. Ivy Press has announced The Book of Caterpillars: A Life-Size Guide to Six Hundred Species from Around the World (due October), which will follow the same format of pictorial excellence as other titles in this series. The cover looks very promising. Two other books have been published recently which we will be stocking: A Guide to Lanternflies of Borneo by Natural History Publications Borneo and Butterflies of Hertfordshire and Middlesex from the Hertfordshire Natural History Society. We have also just received stock of Longhorn Beetles in Sweden: Changes in Distribution and Abundance over the Last Two Hundred Years, which, even though published in 2011, has not been widely available so far. For botanists, there is only one title to mention this month, but it's a big one: Kew will publish Plants of the World: An Illustrated Encyclopedia of Vascular Plant Families (due September), with Chicago University Press co-publishing this in the USA. To round off this month, we have a selection of wildlife and environmental titles. Bloomsbury has just revealed the fifth volume in the British Wildlife Collection: Saltmarsh (due October) by Clive Chatters. Aurum press will publish ReWild: The Art of Returning to Nature (due June) from the pen of Nick Baker. Finally, there are some practical titles to mention. Johns Hopkins University Press will publish Becoming a Wildlife Professional (due August) and Packard Publishing has just brought out a revised second edition of A Guide to Habitat Creation. Cambridge University Press has announced Defending Biodiversity: Environmental Science and Ethics (due August) which will help environmentalists and conservationists in building stronger and more convincing cases when discussing the value of biodiversity with people on the other side of the argument. It seems that there has never been a more pressing need for such a book than the last few months.
