Police Station ClosureInspector Chris Young who took up his position as Rural Neighbourhood Inspector in D e c e m b e r confirmed that the Aylesbury Road Police Station would close in the new financial year With people using other means to make contact with the Police the Station now has very few visitors Neighbourhood Teams would be based in Aylesbury with a car and an officer dedicated to Wendover Emergency calls are already dealt with from Aylesbury There will be no change in the level of policing being provided and it is hoped to find venues for drop-in sessions locally

In 1976 Concorde made its first commercial flight thanks to a famous Anglo-French partnership But a further Anglo-French partnership was firmly established as the people of Wendover and Liffreacute a town near Rennes in Brittany were united by a Twinning Charter signed on August 1 by John Pryor (Chairman of Wendover Parish Council) and Louis Lorant (Mayor of Liffreacute)

Since 1976 households in and around Wendover have welcomed visitors from Liffreacute and have enjoyed generous hospitality when travelling to Brittany It is evident that many enduring friendships have been forged between our two communities

Wendover Twinning Association plans many activities throughout the year with an emphasis on enjoyment and fund-raising The highlight of the year occurs in May when we visit Liffreacute or are visited by our friends from across the Channel

Our 40th Anniversary will be celebrated when a group of 35 Liffreacuteens visit us 13-16

May The Committee has been busy planning a very special weekend featuring a reception at Halton House supper at St Maryrsquos a visit to Windsor Castle and a Thames river boat trip with lunch and wine and a picnic in Wendover Woods

With the help of Wendover Parish Council and the Friends of Wendover Library the area around the Twinning Stones has once again become a source of pride for the whole community Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce is organising a Best Dressed Window competition so look out for a Gallic influence as you walk down the High Street

Liffreacute and Wendoverndash twinned for 40 years


MAY 1916On the Western Front the fighting around Verdun developed into an attritional bloodbath Italy was invaded by Austrian troops Russia won a number of minor victories in the Carpathians Fifteen leaders of the Easter Uprising in Ireland were executed by the British and thereby became Republican heroes and martyrs At Jutland 274 ships and over 7000 sailors of the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet fought for control of the North Sea While the British lost more ships than the Germans the German Fleet returned to harbour never to take on the British Fleet again during the remainder of the war

Petty Officer Thomas Rogers the son of Joe and Elizabeth Rogers of Bacombe Terrace was killed in action on 31 May during the Jutland battle Early in the morning of that day his ship HMS Queen Mary was struck by a

salvo penetrating the main magazine The ship exploded and sank in half a minute Seventeen survivors were picked up from a total shiprsquos complement of more than 1000

George Brock fought at Jutland His son also George lived in Wendover for some 40 years and has a collection of his fatherrsquos war memoirs George Brock Sr served on HMS Marlborough and at Jutland witnessed

gunnery action and attacks by a zeppelin and a submarine The Marlborough was severely damaged by enemy gunfire but managed to limp back to Grimsby

Private William Fantham of the 15th Leicester Regiment son of William and Jane Fantham of the Pack Horse Tring Road was killed on 8 May His Platoon Sergeant wrote to his parents ldquoI take the privilege of writing these few lines to you over your son William Fantham No doubt you have been informed before now that he was killed in action while performing one of the most dangerous duties that falls to our lot that is of mining fatigue He was at work down a sap with other comrades when the Germans blew it in on them burying him and another I can assure you that all was done to get them out but it was impossible to save them What makes it seem harder is that they would have been out in about half an hourrdquo

On 6 May Private Walter George Deering son of Walter and Sarah Deering of 1 Clay Lane was killed near Vimy Ridge while serving with the 1st Wiltshire Regiment George Deering enlisted into the Ox and Bucks LI in Aylesbury in 1914 and had previously been wounded in the head A letter to his parents from a comrade in his platoon read ldquoHe died as bravely as anyone could when we were

taking a German mine crater being shot by German machine gun fire and his death was instantaneousrdquo

Both William Fantham and George Deering had been pupils at Wendover School and Mr Molineux the headmaster noted their deaths in the School Log Book

He also noted an outbreak of measles in Wendover and the resulting poor attendance at school The school celebrated Empire day by raising and saluting the flag Shakespearersquos tercentenary was marked by special lessons in the upper school on his life and works The Government introduced the ldquoFuel and Daylight Saving Schemerdquo and Mr E J Sharp adjusted the Church and Town clocks by one hour The Bucks Herald of 13 May noted ldquoOn Sunday after evening service the difference in time was manifest by a large number of persons visiting the hillsrdquo

Wendover News contacted the National Trust who manage Coombe Hill and received the following reply from Joe Mayled the Ranger ldquoYou are right in saying that a lot of work has been done on Coombe Hill and Bacombe Hill the past few years and that it is for conservation reasons mainly restoration of rare chalk grassland as a valuable habitat for chalk grassland flowers and butterflies This work is pretty standard practice for us during the winter monthsrdquo

Joe contacted Mark Vallance the Reserves Manager for Buckinghamshire at Berks Bucks amp Oxon Wildlife Trust who said ldquoThe site was heavily cleared of secondary

woodlandscrub in a major project by Bucks CC in the early 1990s The years of scrub and woodland cover has led to the nutrient enrichment and the build up of thicker soils on these parts of the site The areas are now heavily dominated by scrubby species such as dogwood young ash trees that have seeded out of the surrounding woodland and more dominant plant species that thrive on the richer soils such as rosebay willowherb bramble and coarse grass species

ldquoThe annual mowing and spring and autumn cattle grazing is aimed at knocking these dominating species back and allowing the areas to be re-colonised by plants more associated with chalk grassland such as marjoram field scabious wild thyme common valerian greater knapweed and orchid species This in turn will benefit a whole host of insect speciesrdquo

The ParadeAs usual the first event of Wendover Celebrates will be the Parade which will gather at Ashbrook Playing Field Castle Park in time for the off at 12 noon

The route is along Aylesbury Road towards the Clock Tower then up the High Street Spectators are welcome along the entire route but most gather in front of the hostelries in the narrow part or on the Manor Waste

At the mini-roundabout the Parade will turn left into South Street and continue through the entrance to the car park of Wendover Campus of the Chiltern Way Federation before the road reaches the roundabout for the bypass

Many spectators choose to follow the parade once it has passed them When they reach Church Lane they should use it to reach the pedestrian entrance Others choose to walk along the Heron Path then turn left into Church Lane near St Maryrsquos and follow round

Recently the North Atlantic Treaty Organisationrsquos Air Forces Inter-Nation Volleyball Championships was held at RAF Halton Male and female military teams from the UK USA Poland the Netherlands and Germany participated in the event

The Royal Air Force Sports Directorate organised and hosted the event which was formally opened in the Burnett Gymnasium

The opening was followed by three days of intense rivalry on the court with the standard of the volleyball played being very high The games were played in a lsquoround robinrsquo style with the finals being played by the teams that topped their respective groups The menrsquos competition was won by the German Air Force who beat the Polish Air Force in the final and the womanrsquos final was contested between the United States Air Force (Europe) team and the Polish Air Force The USAFE team won a keenly played game The RAF Teams came fourth in both competitions

Away from the courts many friends were made and the German Captain encapsulated the spirit of the event when he said ldquoThe tournament is more than just a sport it is about meeting new friends and comradeshiprdquo

After the formal closing ceremony the teams were able to relax in the Warrant Officers and Sergeantsrsquo Mess

The tournament was the first in a series of sporting events between the countries with the next event being a swimming competition hosted by the USAFE in Aviano Italy

Manor WasteOf course most people do not like change - and everybody has ideas on what is right or wrong about their environment and I would not want to stop Wendover people expressing their views However I take a completely different view of the work done on the Manor Waste to that expressed by the petitioners and their supporters online

Firstly as the Parish Council Chairmanrsquos piece on page 32 of the April edition showed there was extensive if not exhaustive consultation before the work was commissioned I feel assured that the councillors did their best to meet the needs of the village its inhabitants and its businesses

Secondly the petition purports to be by ldquoWendover Residentsrdquo yet at the time of my reading the website shows that of the 412 ldquosupportersrdquo 379 are from the United Kingdom (so 33 must be living abroad) Furthermore I have lived in Wendover for 45 years and there is hardly a name I recognise Perhaps my neighbours and acquaintances are among the many ldquonames not displayedrdquo

Thirdly the pictures used are of the work in progress which obviously will have an untidy appearance Now that about half has been completed and the barriers removed there is a notable improvement to the upper section from Dobbins Lane to the Budgens frontage

What others may consider ugly I find clean comfortable and practical HS2 permitting tourists will find Wendover an attractive place to visit Market traders and charity market stall holders will have modern facilities

Finally I doubt that those cobbles were very historic or that leaving them in place would have much influence on how young people (or anyone else) would think of using the space for any nefarious purpose

Well done the Council In two years I think we will all be recognizing Wendover as a go-ahead village that serves its residents and visitors well

Club CornerSimply WalksEvery Tuesday morning as the clock strikes 1000 two groups leave the clock tower for walks along the footpaths of Wendover and its surrounds They are led by trained volunteer leaders as part of the Bucks Simply Walk programme affiliated to the national Walking for Health Scheme One group follows one of the many routes using footpaths that take between 45 to 60 minutes to complete the other takes a slightly longer route lasting between 60 and 90 minutes Neither are lsquoroutersquo marches but are taken at a pace that allows for social chat that is so much part of the enjoyment of being out exercising together Both groups meet up at the end and enjoy the hospitality of the Free Church for coffee

The walks are free and open to everybody You would be most welcome to join us regularly or as other commitments allow All that is asked of you is that if you suffer from any long term illness you consult your GP and check that you are fit enough to

benefit from the exercise By the nature of our surrounding countryside some walks do involve hills mud and possibly stiles

As we stated in the last Wendover News we were deeply disappointed with the Commons HS2 Select Committeersquos failure to recommend extending the Chiltern Tunnel throughout the whole length of the AONB to the North of Wendover A massive civil engineering project will cut through the heart of the village yet Wendover will have the least level of mitigation spent per affected household along the route The current HS2 Ltd proposal is for two viaducts each 500 metres long and a height of 15 metres joined by a massive embankment over 1 km long all sitting within the AONB (an area which is supposed to have the same protected status as a National Park)

Hopefully many of you saw the Wendover HS2 booth on the Manor Waste over the weekend of 8 to 10 April Realising that the original noise calculations for Wendover were totally erroneous HS2 Ltd in an attempt to pre-empt any further discussion about a long tunnel presented a plan which

involved the construction of 6 metre sound barriers from the Small Dene viaduct to the entrance of the so-called Green Tunnel and again at the northern exit of this tunnel towards Nash Lee Lane HS2 Ltd thinks these are the perfect solution to ldquoprotectrdquo Wendover from the noise generated by the HS2 train Unfortunately when asked directly they were unable to tell us where else in the UK these had been employed and in fact whether they would actually work at all At best they would provide the ideal opportunity for an enterprising individual to set up a small business selling cans of spray paint to budding Banksys thus satisfying another of Her Majestyrsquos Government aims to help SMErsquos and generate job opportunities with HS2

To illustrate the visual impact of these barriers we had a scissor lift extended to 6 metres on the Manor Waste Most people visiting the stand were horrified and we would like to thank all of you who did call in

and donated much-needed funds to allow us to continue the fight We were also fortunate to have Lord Stevenson of Balmacara join us at another fund-raising event to describe how the Lords differed from the Commons and to advise us as to how to petition Subsequently at the Lords HS2 debate on the 14th April he commented ldquoIt will also be important to reflect on the experiences of the Commons Select Committee and learn from them hellipOne is left with a feeling that what the Commons Select Committee described as the ldquoheavy burden of petitioningrdquo was a chore it had to endure and not an opportunity for finding a resolution The fact that so many petitioners raised similar points and sought the same mitigationmdashin the case of the Chilterns a bored long tunnelmdashwas seen as a problem and not a rather obvious clue about where the solution to the petitionersrsquo concerns layrdquo

Later in his speech he went on to say ldquoI hope that the Lords Select Committee will ensure

that it considers the wider public interest issues raised by the decision to take the line out of a deep tunnel at South Heath in the middle of the Chilterns and to continue at surface level to Wendover There were more than 800 petitions from individuals and action groups about the Chilterns tunnelhelliprecommendations from the statutory bodies concerned with the Chilterns (was) that a deep long tunnel was the only possible mitigation to the potential damage caused were framed in as strong a language as is permissiblehelliprdquo

All the four organisations representing the Wendover community are agreed on the need for a long tunnel which will alleviate not only the noise issues but also the risk to the hydrogeology of the area and the increased traffic during the construction phase to say nothing of the impact on local services We are petitioning the House of Lords for an independent assessment of the cost of a long tunnel versus HS2 Ltdrsquos current proposals

WCEJS Students - Dementia FriendsIt is National Dementia Awareness Week from 15-21 May 2016 This is an annual event which is supported throughout UK In the UK there are about 800000 people with dementia It is estimated that around 400000 people have dementia but do not know it Over 21 million people know someone affected by it Dementia affects people in many different ways and by increasing awareness of this condition we can change the way we think talk and act about dementia

Wendover C of E Junior School is at the forefront of this initiative Year three are supporting local people with Dementia as part of the lsquoGo Givers Make a Difference Challengersquo This is a child-led citizenship project for KS2 that supports pupils in identifying researching and addressing a cause or concern that they want to do something about by developing an awareness raising campaign fundraising or taking direct action It presents an opportunity for children to take the lead in making a difference to their community

The year three children have already become lsquoDementia Friendsrsquo which is a national project organised by The Alzheimerrsquos Society On Thursday 10 March the children were visited by one of our school governors Sylvia Oram who is a Dementia Friends Champion During the session the children learnt a lot more about dementia and how it affects people They now wear their badges with pride to show how much they know about dementia

Over the next half term the children will

be visiting people with dementia in a local residential home They are busy working on their songs and poems they have prepared for this and are really looking forward to the experience We look forward to reporting what

we have done and the difference we have made to our local community as part of our challenge

Frisbee Fundraising FunStaff and students at John Colet school raised over pound1300 by taking part in their annual 12 Hour Ultimate Frisbee fundraising challenge and were delighted to donate the money to this yearrsquos chosen charity Chilterns MS Centre which supports people with Multiple Sclerosis enabling them to live a happier and more comfortable life

Students and teachers started their challenge at 9am and left the school at 9pm tired but elated by their achievement A normal game of Frisbee lasts about ten minutes so everyone involved took on a huge task

Nico Pope was one of the John Colet students that took part in the event He said ldquoEveryone involved had a great time We were all overwhelmed by the amount raised

The grand total of pound1380 was amazing and broke all previous records smashing through the pound1000 mark is something we are all very proud of

ldquoIt is fair to say everyone was relieved when 9pm eventually came around but that does not diminish the great fun and enjoyment everyone got out of the dayrdquo

Gary was born in Bagshot Surrey on 21st December 1960 being joined later by two younger sisters Nichola and Beverly The family eventually moved to Weston Turville where Gary grew up attending the local village school He was a very bright child who passed his 11 plus and went to the Sir Henry Floyd school where he did very well learning hard often doing his homework in the Green Man pub with his mates He had numerous after school jobs always on the go and eventually at 17 Gary decided to join the Royal Navy where again he excelled rising quickly to the rank of Charge Chief Petty Officer Most of Garyrsquos 24 year career was on nuclear submarines where he was very popular and always ready to stick his neck out for the Junior Rates and help in anyway he could

Gary was always a team player enjoying playing Rugby and gaining his ABA Badge for Boxing Not only did he have many fights himself he eventually coached the naval boxing squad One of his greatest passions was the Devonport Field Gun Crew who ran at Earls Court against Pompey and Fleet Air Arm and anyone who knew Gary will know

Gary met Toni in 1992 They married in Kenya in 1995 and Toni became stepmum to Garyrsquos son Elliot They moved back to Wendover

from Plymouth when Garyrsquos naval career was coming to an end Gary always loved to help and become involved with lots of different things

He found it slightly difficult on leaving the navy so he

threw himself into community life willing to help and organise where needed He got a job locally with Ulrich Attachments where he was the Production Manager He did join the local council for a short time but work commitments meant he couldnrsquot give it the time and dedication it needed so he had to leave but always said he would like to return when he had more time always

commenting ldquotherersquos no point moaning about something if you arenrsquot prepared to do something about itrdquo

Gary organised so many things dragging people out of their beds at 6am on New Yearrsquos Day to sweep up after the fireworks He would also organise work parties to clear up the graveyard with the members of Hampden Lodge as by this time he had also joined the Masons Irsquom sure people would quiver when they saw him approaching thinking ldquoOh Lord what does he want us to do nowrdquo

Garyrsquos local pub was The White Swan From there he organised the team for the annual Coombe Hill run raising lots of money for local charities and this year of course the team will be running in memory of Gary for the charity Brain Tumour Research

Gary quite simply was one of the most kind and generous people you could wish to meet and was always willing to help in any way he could He is greatly mourned We lost one of our greats on 29 February 2016

Amy lives in Wendover with husband Simon and two children Rosie (7) and Hugo (4)

She moved to Wendover (by accident) 12 years ago when her grandmotherrsquos house needed renting ldquoThe idea was to move in temporarily and help do the house up to put it on the market Simon and I moved in started to do it up a little and then realised that actually we loved living in Wendover and ended up buying it from the familyrdquo

Amy grew up in the area living in Buckland Village near Aston Clinton from the age of 3 She was christened there married there (even managing to walk up the road from her parentsrsquo house to the church) and both Rosie and Hugo have since been christened in All Saints Church Buckland too

University tempted Amy away from the area up to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to study Travel and Tourism Management followed by a stint living in London and working for the Civil Aviation Authority before getting the travel bug big time and setting off on a back packing trip alone around the world ldquoTravel was always in my blood hence the degreerdquo Her trip encompassed three monthrsquos voluntary work in Sri Lanka then tours of Australia New Zealand Fiji and the Cook Islands before returning back home to a man shersquod met just before she lefthellipSimon

After her return Amy cut her teeth in the world of Event Management with the Grass Roots Group in Tring At the time they were one of the top agencies in the country

for Corporate Events and she worked on everything from automotive Dealer Principal incentive trips to Zambia and Botswana to running a global meeting at the UN building in New York for 500 people ldquoIt was a crazy time but fantastic experience and I loved the variety of the role (and the travel opportunities of course)rdquo

Then children came along and it was time to look for a part time role An opportunity arose in a smaller Events business just outside Thame where Amy was Senior Event Manager for almost 6 years

2015 saw a new development Amy decided it was time to set up her own Events business Raspberry Rhubarb She left her employer set up the business and hasnrsquot looked back

The business encompasses corporate events wedding planning and private parties Raspberry Rhubarb already has contracts with a luxury holiday company is working with an automotive client and has various party bookings for later this year 2016 has already seen her travel to Italy to Scotland numerous times and all over the UK with her job ldquoIrsquom so lucky that things are going well and I love what I dordquo Further information about Raspberry Rhubarb can be found at wwwraspberryrhubarbcom

The recent wet weather has impacted on a number of community projects and completion dates have inevitably and frustratingly slipped Nevertheless as you move about Wendover I hope you will have noticed a number of things changing for the better

After many months of planning and consultation with local users a series of works were commissioned at Hampden Pond We had three core aims to improve the biodiversity and make it a more attractive area for wildlife and plants to tidy the area and make it more attractive and accessible for visitors by improving the bench seating and opening up some overgrown viewing points and finally to reconstruct a number of defunct fishing pegs in order to permit safer and more enjoyable fishing by local anglers

The works have seen a number of potentially dangerous trees felled or pruned the significant reduction of some aggressive and invasive plants which have forced out other less vigorous varieties and minor earthworks to provide seven new fishing pegs and shore up the banks to

prevent further erosion The works will continue periodically through the summer and I urge you all to come and enjoy this lovely local feature as the good weather returns

Visitors to Ashbrook will have noticed the upgrade of the play area equipment This modern and colourful new build includes new climbing frames slides and chutes etc to keep our younger residents happy Of particular note after a request from the mother of a local child we decided to seek out and install some specific items for children who have additional needs Although the build has been delayed by the wet weather I hope that by the time you read this the work will have been completed in full

GrantsSince the financial year 200910 the Parish Council has considered applications for grants from various bodies

A reduction in funding to Buckinghamshire County Council has meant that the authority has withdrawn or reduced the funding it contributes to some local services for instance the Youth Centre and the Library The County Council is looking to devolve some services to Parish Councils with limited finance to cover the increased cost to the Parish Councils It is likely that Aylesbury

Vale District Council will follow suit and this trend will continue resulting in increased financial pressures on Wendover Parish Council

In addition the way in which Parish Councils are funded is changing leading to a reduction in grant received and a likely increase in Council Tax charges to local residents

In the light of the current and future financial pressures facing the Parish Council our financial policy has been revised as follows

bull Wendover Parish Council will only consider making financial contributions to local properly constituted organisations that directly serve the community of Wendover and provide services that meet the needs of Wendover residents

bull Applications will be assessed by the Grants Working Group of Wendover Parish Council against the associated questionnaire

bull The maximum awarded to any organisation is pound5000 in any one financial year
