YOUR MILL NEEDS YOU!!

This year Wrawby Postmill needs to be re-painted. This has to be done every 5 – 7 years to ensure that the mill is kept in the best possible

condition.

As you can imagine the cost of doing this is high due to the nature of the building & the materials needed i.e. a cherry picker needs to be hired &

special paint used. The paint for the four sails alone costs over £500! Our local joiner Brian Willey & Son will be doing the work & the

quote he has given the committee is £5000.

Due to the well-deserved retirement of one of our main fundraisers we are casting our net into the community.

The committee would therefore be very pleased to hear from anyone who feels they would like to make a donation towards the cost of keeping our

famous village landmark on the map! Our Postmill is one of the last in the country & as such is of national importance so needs to be preserved for

future generations.

If you feel you can help then please call Susan Day on 01652 653699. Many thanks.

Christian Aid Week 15-21 May 2016

House-to-house collecting is how Christian Aid Week began, and it still raises an incredible £6.5m across Britain and Ireland every year. For thousands of churches, it’s a vital part of their

mission and how they demonstrate God’s love for our neighbours. Morsheda may live in Bangladesh, but she’s still our neighbour. Living on a low-lying island on the Brahmaputra river, she is in constant fear of the floods that have destroyed her home four times. But with your help this Christian Aid Week, we can lift our neighbours like Morsheda to safety. Just £250 is enough to raise her home above the floods and give her a goat, seeds and a wormery to produce compost to help her build a new life, safe from fear.

Seville Orange Marmalade A recipe from the Wrawby Make and Sale Group to get your taste buds tingling! Ingredients 1.3kg Seville Oranges 2.6kg preserving sugar 2 lemons 2.75 litre water Method 1.Wash the oranges and lemons and cut lengthways. 2.Squeeze the juice from both oranges and lemons. 3.Discard the lemons. 4.On a large piece of muslin, scrape the pips and pith of the oranges into the middle, then tie the muslin up to form a bag. 5.Finely shred the orange peel. 6.Put the peel, juice and bag of pith and pips into a preserving pan with the 2.75l of water, bring to the boil and simmer gently, uncovered for 2 hours until the peel is soft. 7.Remove the muslin bag and allow contents of pan to cool. Don’t discard the bag. 8. Add the sugar to the pan and dissolve over a low heat. 9.Once sugar is dissolved, bring the pan to the boil. 10.Take the bag of pips and pith and squeeze out into the pan all the sticky jelly-like substance from it. Stir in well. 11.Boil the mixture for at least 15 minutes, until the setting point is reached. Test this by allowing a spoonful to cool on a chilled saucer for a few seconds, then seeing if the surface wrinkles when you push with your finger. 12.Sterilise and heat the jars in a medium oven for about 5 minutes. 13.Skim the marmalade and leave to cool a little. 14.Stir once more and pour into the jars. Seal the jars while still hot.

Clean For The Queen - Thank You!

A huge thank you to the 12 Wrawby residents who turned out, in not very pleasant weather, to collect rubbish from around the village on Saturday 2nd April in support of the Clean For The Queen campaign. Between them they managed to cover virtually the entire village and collected 15 large bags of rubbish from right around the village. The

council have collected the bags and included them with the total bags collected in North Lincolnshire.

Around Wrawby

There were no entries in the registers this month Please remember that the editors would be happy to include details of village births, marriages and deaths that are held in venues other than Wrawby church. Cream Scones and Coffee - On the first Saturday every month, there is a coffee morning in the church from 10.00am to 12 noon. Why not pop in to sample cream scones and relax over a cup of coffee (or tea if you prefer)? All are welcome. Wrawby Village Hall is a great venue for parties, meetings etc. with very reasonable hire charges. Please contact Susan Day on 01652 653669 to book or discuss what the hall can offer. Please note the mechanism for the Church Clock is currently being fixed consequently meaning that the clock is not working at the present time. It is hoped that it should be up and running again in mid-late May. Wrawby Sleigh Group are delighted to announce that we have donated £50 to the Elsham and District LIVES group. The criterion for a grant is that it should benefit the village and its residents. For more information or to apply for funding contact us on [email protected]

A Call to Prayer

One of the fundamental roles of a Christian is to pray, now there is a frightening prospect! Many people, including myself, say they find it difficult to pray. However, prayer is simply communicating, in this case communicating between yourself and God- most of us do it without actually realising. Do you find yourself saying things to yourself like “Help me get out of this mess”, or “I wish I hadn’t done or said that”? In doing so you have actually sent a prayer (they are called Arrow Prayers). But to pray you actually don’t need to say or do anything at all, just be quiet and allow your thoughts to subside and make yourself receptive to hear God speaking to you.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have sent a letter to every parish priest with a wish “to see a great wave of prayer across our land, throughout the Church of England and many other Churches” from 8th-15th May. In their letter the Archbishops said:

“At the heart of our prayers will be words that Jesus himself taught us – ‘Thy kingdom come, thy will be done.’ It is impossible to overstate the life-transforming power of the Lord’s Prayer. It is a prayer that is reassuring enough to be on the lips of the dying and yet dangerous enough to be banned in cinemas. It is famous enough to be spoken each day by billions in hundreds of languages and yet intimate enough to draw us ever closer into friendship with Jesus Christ. It is simple enough to be memorised by small children and yet profound enough to sustain a whole lifetime of prayer. When we pray it with sincerity and with joy, there is no imagining the new ways in which God can use us to his glory.”

Prayer can take many forms, from silences to great services of liturgy, said or sung. Prayer can be made by an individual or a group of people, as I said earlier it doesn’t require any special skills; it can be done consciously or even without us knowing that we are actually praying. Our churches within the group will be joining in this “great wave of prayer” in a number of ways and we invite you to either join us in church or alone at home.

The week of prayer will culminate in ‘Beacon Events’ around the country over Pentecost weekend, where people will pray for the renewal of the Holy Spirit and the confidence to share their faith. Prayer and bible resources will be available in those churches which are usually open all day (Cadney every day dawn until dusk; Wrawby Monday to Friday 9 am – 3 pm; Worlaby Tuesday’s) for people to drop in.

Fr. Owain will be in St. John’s, Brigg between 12 and 1pm Sun 08th through to Sat 14th, and anyone would be welcome to join him.

A group from all five churches will be travelling to each other’s churches for half an hour of prayer between 7 and 7.30 pm during the week – Monday at Wrawby; Tuesday at Brigg; Wednesday at Bonby; Thursday at Cadney and Friday at Worlaby. Lifts are available and it would be good to have as many as possible join us.

Each Parish Church in our group will be open between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday 14th for people to drop in and pray… again, prayer and scripture resources will be available. We will conclude the week with a service at St. John’s at 6 pm on Pentecost Sunday (May 15th).
