The Community Synagogue is a vibrant, caring and inclusive Reform congregation that inspires meaningful relationships with one another, the larger community and with God.
When I became President almost two years ago, I promised transparency and openness so that every congregant would have an understanding of what it takes to run this synagogue.
Up to this point, we managed to keep this ship of prayer, learning and love on an even keel. We knew, and financial projections have confirmed, that there could come a day when we would have to face the problem of not having enough revenue to maintain our high standards in every area of operation.
My friends, that day has come. In preparing our synagogue budget for 2015/2016 (July 1, 2015 thru June 30, 2016), we currently face a deficit of $160,000. Compared with the budget for 2014/2015, the proposed budget does not contain any substantial increase in expenses in any area but one, and that area is Youth Engagement. Your Board of Trustees previously recognized the importance of creating a strong Youth Engagement program to help our pre-teens and teens remain connected to Jewish values, traditions, our synagogue and the Jewish people.
All the other increases—the quiet ones, the ones that sneak up on you—include costs that we all have to bear….contractual salary increases, health insurance, general insurance, snow removal, repairs, cost of living for employees, etc.
So how do we resolve this situation? There are only two ways to eliminate a deficit: increase your income and/or cut expenses.Increasing income should be easy, however for the past six years, with an increase in membership by about 50 families, our

Continued from pg. 1PRESIDENT’S LETTERrevenue has remained flat. What that means is that though we have more members in our congregation, our revenue per member family has decreased. I must ask you once again to please consider increasing your financial commitment to our synagogue with donations to the Synagogue Fund or with a voluntary increase in dues.
The other option would be to cut expenses. Over the past few years, seeing no increase in revenue, we cut wherever we could, buying fewer supplies, renegotiating supplier contracts, etc., but in total, these do not amount to very large savings.
We are now exploring the possibility of having to charge non-members for High Holy Day tickets—a substantive departure from our congregational tradition. Other potential financial streams of revenue are also being explored.
The harsh reality is that in the absence of an increase in revenue, when the
2016/2017 is being prepared, serious consideration will be made to reduction of staff and/or reduction or complete elimination of programs currently in operation.
As you know, deficits have an ability to keep increasing and to perpetuate themselves if not addressed immediately. The Board of Trustees and I view our current budget deficit very, very seriously and we will take whatever actions are necessary, however difficult, to insure the continued fiscal integrity of our synagogue.
You are welcome to view our proposed budget, ask any questions you may have and share your constructive suggestions or recommendations. Your input and support are key to our success.

Over the past years, our school has worked with LEGO architect
Stephen W. Schwartz, who helped us learn and celebrate through LEGO building creations. This year, Stephen brought us an inspiring new program.
We don’t usually think of LEGOs when we think of Holocaust education. The colorful and fun building toys do not seem to have any relation to learning about the Holocaust. Our 6th graders quickly realized how much they could learn from building with LEGOs, as they
worked with Stephen to build a replica of the Warsaw Ghetto. The replica we built together recreated the walls of the ghetto and the major buildings, where most of the 500,000 ghetto occupants were forced to live. The walls and structure of the ghetto quickly took shape as the students followed the floor map and Stephen’s instructions. Before we knew it, we had the model of the Warsaw Ghetto before us.
After the construction was completed, we were joined by Ms. Nessa Ben Asher, a 91 year old survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto who shared with us her incredible story as she walked us through the ghetto and
taught us about the place where she spent her teen-age years. Our LEGO bricks came to life as she pointed out where her family lived, where her father worked and the gate through which she eventually snuck out...and then even helped others to escape! We were captivated by her story of survival. The Religious School students will certainly not forget this unusual learning experience about the Warsaw Ghetto and the Holocaust.

From April through June money collect-ed in the tzedakah box in the synagogue

DO A MITZVAH!HELP THE UKRAINIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY
While the shaky ceasefire in the eastern part of the Ukraine is still holding, JDC ( Joint Distribution Committee) continues to provide material and psychological support to members of the Jewish community in the conflict zone as well as to internal “refugees” who have moved to the west and to Russia.
At this moment, JDC is caring for 4,700 Jews in the east, as well as another 2400 displaced people. The JDC assistance includes food, medicine, home care for those who are home bound, shelters for the refugees and repairs to homes damaged in the fighting, as well as post-trauma counseling, warm clothing, heating fuel and warm bedding to the needy enduring a harsh winter exacerbated by Ukraine’s energy crisis.
JDC is a major source of support for Jewish community programs which integrate the refugees into their new communities. All of this costs money. JDC expects that the need for supplemental emergency relief
efforts will continue for the coming months at $387,000 per month of additional costs. JDC has an anonymous donor who will give $1 additional for every $2 raised for all new Ukraine emergency gifts and pledges over $10,000 (e.g. a new $10,000 pledge would secure a $5,000 additional match = Totaling $15,000 to the Ukraine emergency fund). Cash donations (bills or coins) can be made at the synagogue in the main lobby. Donations by check can be sent to the synagogue or by credit card to the Rabbis’ Discretionary Fund (earmarked “Joint Distribution Committee”).

Question: Why do we celebrate Shavuot on the 6th of Sivan ?
We might assume that the answer to this question is very simple: Shavuot gca is on the 6th of Sivan because that’s what it says in the Torah – only it doesn’t.
It is true that Shavuot gca is one of the five festivals introduced in the Torah (the other four are Pesach , Rosh Hashanah ba a, Yom Kippur , and Sukkot ), and it is true that for four of the five festivals we are given a specific date to celebrate. Pesach is the 15th day of the 1st month (Nissan b), and in the 7th month (Tishrei a) Rosh Hashanah ba a is the 1st day, Yom Kippur is the 10th day, and Sukkot is the 15th day. In contrast with these festivals for Shavuot gca no date is given and instead we are told to count.
In Vayikra (Leviticus) 23:15-16 it says: “And you shall count from the next day after the sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete; to the next day after the seventh sabbath shall you count fifty days; and you shall offer a new meal offering to Adonai.”
While in Devarim c (Deuteronomy) 16:9-10 it says: “Seven weeks shall you count; begin to number the seven weeks from such time as you begin to put the sickle to the grain. And you shall
keep the Feast of Weeks to Adonai your God.”
The challenge with the date of Shavuot gca is that as you can see, the two passages contain different instructions. In Vayikra the counting begins on the day after Shabbat (a Sunday) with a celebration on the 50th day, which would also be a Sunday. While in contrast in Devarim c, the count is for seven weeks. This period of counting is today known as the Omer g, and as you may know, we begin this count on the second day of Pesach , not on a Sunday.
By fixing the count by date (beginning on the 16th of Nissan b) instead of fixing it by day, the Rabbis ensured that Shavuot gca would forever be on the same day in our calendar.
This might not seem like a very important fact to discuss, but it was a vitally important decision in the establishment of rabbinic authority. The Torah, especially Vayikra , appears clear about begin-ning the count on a Sunday – and in the Talmud we have evidence that those who read the Torah literally celebrated Shavuot gca on a Sunday. But the Rabbis
altered the understanding of Sabbath so that it was interpreted as meaning a festive day, and could be applied to the first day of Pesach .
In changing the meaning of the Torah the Rabbis were able to establish their author-ity and to assert that their interpretations of Torah would take precedence, some-times over the text itself. And in fixing the date of the festival they were also able to give Shavuot gca significance outside of the Temple service, establishing it as the celebration of the date on which Torah was given. This served to wrestle power away from the Priesthood, arguably the primary rivals of the Rabbis for authority over the Jewish community.
In this way, when we come to celebrate Shavuot gca this month we are not just celebrating a festival given to us in the Torah. We are not just celebrating the festival on which Torah was given to the Jewish people. We are also celebrating the festival which bears witness to the success of Rabbinic Judaism in establishing itself as the primary expression of Judaism in the aftermath of the destruction of the Second Temple, through until today.

The Holocaust event, "Hidden in Holland, An Iconic Victim and a Fortunate Survivor," presented on March 11, by Leo Ullman and Gloria Glantz, attended by over 425 people from the Port Washington and surrounding area, offered moments of reflection, education and memory.
The presentation included facts and stories about the life and times of the child diarist Anne Frank. The presenters, Gloria Glantz and Leo Ullman, were both eloquent and moving in relating their personal perspec-tives.
Gloria, herself a hidden child in Poland, is with us today because, when she was three years old, her parents gave her to a won-derful Catholic woman who brought her up as her own. Gloria escaped the Nazis who murdered the rest of her family. An award-winning Holocaust educator, she gave an in-depth presentation about Anne Frank, as a memorial to Aaron Morgan, our congregant, who had designed the refurbished elements of the sanctuary and was a renowned artist.
Gloria spoke about the time and circumstances that forced the Franks into hiding in their attic prison. She detailed the parts played by the Dutch who risked their lives to protect the Frank family. Gloria also explained how the family was eventually betrayed and died in concentra-tion camps. In addition, she pointed out the unique qualities of Anne’s writing, and the unrealized potential of the gifted writer than Anne might have become. Only Anne’s father, Otto Frank, survived and would later have her dairy published.
Leo Ullman told the story of his own fami-ly who were hidden separately, their places not known to each other. However, his sto-ry has a much happier conclusion. When it became obvious that they would have to go into hiding, his father, Frank, realized
that he would need money and was able to obtain Persian rugs to sell. The man who provided the rugs for him to sell gave him a Muslim prayer rug, telling him that, even though he was an infidel, it would bring him good luck. That prayer rug was always given a place of honor in his parents’ home and now it is in his home.Leo and other members of his family were all hidden, in different locations through-out Amsterdam, arranged through one extraordinary man, Piet Hoogenboom and the Dutch Reformed Church. None of them knew where the others were, but through Mr. Hoogenboom, the adults were able to exchange letters on occasion. Of course, little Leo didn’t know who his parents were when they came to take him back at the end of the war.
All were re-united in May, 1945, after be-ing in hiding for 796 days. (“796 Days” is the name of Leo’s mesmerizing first-person story of the war years and the family’s first years in Port Washington.)
In 1947, the Ullman family arrived in Port Washington where Leo’s aunt, Juliemarth Jacobs and her family were well estab-lished. Juliemarth was one of the first presidents of the Sisterhood, her daugh-ter, Bertien was the first bride wed in the Synagogue.
Almost seventy years later, Leo Ullman can look back on an extraordinary life of achievement, as well as involvement in the local community. He is an attorney, a real estate developer, and the founder of a real estate investment trust which he took to the New York Stock Exchange in 2004, resulting in him being named Ernst & Young’s “Entrepreneur of the Year.” He and his wife, Kay, have been deeply involved in the United States Holocaust Museum; he has served as a director of the Anne Frank Center USA and of the Foundation for the Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam.
Through a series of curious circumstances Leo would get to know Otto Frank and Mrs. Geis, the woman who sheltered the Frank family, who were both responsible for saving the diary. His talk was witty and filled with anecdotes about these famous people. The audience was enthralled, surprised and amazed at what they saw and heard. There was thunderous applause at the end of the presentation. All this was followed by wonderful desserts of pastry and fruit donated by the Ullman family.
Rabbi Zeplowitz concluded the "Hidden In Holland" event by holding up the Muslim prayer rug which Leo Ullman’s father was given during his days in hiding and point-ed out, "Even in these difficult times this gesture gives me hope for the future!"

DICK CAVETT IN CONVERSATION WITH ALEC BALDWIN
Wed, May 13, 8 pm (On Demand)Dick Cavett and Alec Baldwin have both acted, written books and hosted talk shows.
Cavett’s latest book, Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic Moments, and Assorted Hijinks, shares his reflections
and reminiscences about Hollywood legends, American cultural icons and the absurdities of everyday life. He offers piquant commen-tary on contemporary politics, the indignities of travel, the nature of comedy writing and the utter improbability of being alive at all. Who better to be in conversation with the legendary Cavett than the one and only Alec Baldwin? Not to be missed! Two copies of Mr. Cavett’s book will be raffled off for a $5 contribution.

Port Jewish Center“Ruth, The Devoted Daughter in Law?”
With Rabbi Alysa Mendelson
We will discuss the biblical heroine Ruth, her mother-in-law Naomi and their relationship in the Book of Ruth, which is tra-ditionally read on the upcoming holiday of Shavuot. Their story is one of devotion, connection and commitment. How can it inspire our own sacred relationships with others and with our tradition?
Rabbi Alysa Mendelson Graf, of Port Jewish Center , will celebrate her one year anniversary as its spiritual
leader July 2015. She received Ordination from the Hebrew Union College in 2004. She has a BA in History from the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from Fordam University. She worked as a matrimonial attorney in Manhattan before deciding to pursue her long-time dream of becoming a rabbi.
Rabbi Mendelson served Temple Israel in Westport, CT, as its Assistant Rabbi, then Associate Rabbi for almost a decade. Throughout her rabbinate, she has been an active member of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and of the Women’s Rabbinic Network, WRN. For the last nine years, she has served on the board of the WRN and is currently serving her last year as co-president. She was selected to be a STAR (Synagogues: Transformation and Renewal) Fellow. Rabbi Mendelson is married to Adam Graf. They have three sons, Gideon, Solomon and Rafi and reside in Port Washington.
