Grand Music Gracious Word Sing For Joy® is a production of St. Olaf College. by Pastor Bruce Benson, host I enjoy and appreciate many aspects of hosting Sing For Joy. Most of them you can easily guess, I’m sure: the regular exposure to great music, the weekly engagement with biblical texts and ideas, being part of a broad listening community all across the country – you! – that shares appreciation for the creative partnership of music and Word. However, there is one lovely aspect of the host’s job you might not notice because you’d have to notice what is not there, rather than what is. During the half-hour broadcast of the program, I never appeal for funds. I like that. Whatever time it would take to solicit support from listeners is time we would not have for music, so I am grateful that hosting the program does not require on-air fund-raising. That doesn’t mean Sing For Joy has such a big treasury it doesn’t need listener support. Nor does it mean we at Sing For Joy have such a low view of our work that we are embarrassed to ask for your support. What it does mean, first of all, is that the steadfast support of the Sukup Manufacturing Company is a great gift to all of us who appreciate the absence of on-air fund-raising. And, second, I am able to use this newsletter to provide occasional reminders of the ongoing need for funds to support Sing For Joy because we do, in fact, depend upon listener support. You can use the envelope included with this newsletter. I know the appeal of Sing For Joy is not measured or described in the same ways by all people. For some, the familiarity of some of the music is deeply important. It is possible that only familiar food does more than familiar music to transport us to inner places of safety and comfort. Comfort food, comfort music. But for others the pleasure of hearing new music, or hearing a familiar tune in a striking, new arrangement, is reason to keep listening. For still others it is the pairings that appeal most, the invitation to enter into biblical texts through doors opened by music, or to hear a work of music along with the biblical text that inspired its composition. There is something about the partnership of biblical Word and sacred music that feeds the soul. Perhaps all of us find ourselves experiencing each of these feelings over the course of weeks and months. As host of the program, it is not my job to push you toward one of these responses more than others. It is simply to share, week by week, what the Christian Church has to offer from its incredible storehouse of music, poetry, and performance, all aimed at responding to the Church’s cycle of Bible readings for Sunday worship. Your support in keeping Sing For Joy strong and healthy is very much appreciated. Peace be with you, MAY 2013 / YEAR C

by Pastor Bruce Benson, host

I enjoy and appreciate many aspects of hosting Sing For Joy. Most of them you can

easily guess, I’m sure: the regular exposure to great music, the weekly engagement with biblical texts and ideas, being part of a broad listening community all across the country – you!

What it does mean, fi rst of all, is that the steadfast support of the Sukup Manufacturing Company is a great gift to all of us who appreciate the absence of on-air fund-raising.

For some, the familiarity of some of the

music is deeply important. Perhaps all of us fi nd ourselves experiencing each of these feelings over the course of weeks and months.
