From The Desk of Father Jon“Give me a word Father, that I may live.”

This saying stems from the life of the Fathers in monasticism. The spiritual son would say this to his elder (γεροντα), waiting for a word, a verse, that would be blessed to follow and bring spiritual life. The verse I will choose will emphasize one Greek word and how it is used. The verse below comes from the psalms and relates to Pascha. May it become a fountain of blessing to you.

In the Resurrection Orthros the first four antiphonal verses sung with the Resurrectional Troparion are from Psalm 67. Αναστήτω ο Θεός καί διασκορπισθήτωσαν οι εχθροί αυτοῦ, καί φυγέτωσαν από προσώπου αυτοῦ οι µισοῦντες αυτόν. Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those that hate Him, flee before His face.

On the evening just before Pascha, we chant in the Vesporal Liturgy of St. Basil, “Ανάστα ο Θεός, κρῖνον τήν γῆν, ὄτι Σύ κατακληρονοµήσεις ἐν πάσι τοῖς ἔθνεσι. Arise O God, and judge the earth; for You shall inherit all the nations.” We are calling upon God to rise from the dead. We are calling upon God to be victorious over the evil one. Yes, the victory was won almost two thousand years ago, but we commemorate the victory by calling upon God.

In the resurrection, the victory is complete. Jesus tramples down death by death and “leads captivity captive.” (ἠχµαλώτευσας αἰχµαλωσίαν) Jesus breaks down the gates of hades and rescues the souls that came before Him, and that lived in anticipation of the Anointed One, the Messiah, the King of kings, and Lord of lords. Jesus is the One who has all authority in heaven and on earth.

Thus, we cry out, Αναστήτω ο Θεός, Let God arise. Let us always be of good courage in the face of opposition. Evil is always defeated by God in this life or the next. Yes, there are trials. Yes, there is tribulation. But we have God and we have faith in the victory over sin and death that is won every time we do the sign of the Cross and call to mind the resurrection of Christ.

Αναστήτω ο Θεός. A blessed Pascha to all. – Fr. Jon Emanuelson

A Note on LeadershipWe are called to serve God every day of our lives. On occasion, we are called to serve in a higher capacity within our Orthodox Church. There are many opportunities in our parish to participate in the ministries that we currently have and many opportunities to start and build new ministries. Thus, with great joy we will hold our 1st annual Workshop on Leadership on Saturday, June 15 from 9am until 2:30pm. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. If you are currently part of the Council of Ministries, please sign up today by calling the office or email, and bring a friend. If you have love for God and our Orthodox Church, sign up and learn more about our ministries and where we are headed for the future and how you can help. Every participant will have all materials provided.

Our blessed faith in the risen Christ should compel us to help our community to grow. «You also, as living stones, are built up into a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable!to!God!by!Jesus!Christ.»!1!Peter!2:5

From Emanuel Miliotis,Parish Council President

We just completed our church spring cleaning event on April 13. I would like to thank the JOY/HOPE team, GOYA and parent volunteers who participated. The church looks great as prepare for Pascha. With that, the parish council would like to invite all of our parishioners and their families to our upcoming Holy Week services. This is a very special time in our church as we gather to worship together during our Lords Passion and Resurrection. These are some of the most moving services in our Orthodox church and they will be special to share them with our new priest Fr. Jon Emanuelson.

We would also extend the invitation to our Pascha picnic at Hugh McRae Park. As in other years, we will hold our Agape service at the park, shelter 6, and directly after the conclusion we will have our picnic. The church will supply the lamb as we invite everyone to bring a cover dish. Don’t forget to bring items for the outdoors as the park offers plenty to do. Of course there will be plenty of fellowship with one another.

Finally, don’t forget right around the corner is our XXI Greek Festival, May 17-19th. This is our biggest event and we serve thousands. We definitely can use your help even for part of the weekend. If you would like to help please see any festival committee person or PC member, we can use your support. It is great opportunity to showcase our faith and culture to our community.

Outreach & EvangelismJim Stasios

As we leave April and move into May, we have a busy season here at St. Nicholas. We welcome all new parishioners and visitors to join us for our many services and activities.

We observe Palm Sunday on April 28th and begin our journey through Holy Week to Pascha. The Church has services each evening during Holy Week and several weekday services. Please consult other articles in this newsletter for a complete list of Holy Week & Pascha Services.

We observe Holy Wednesday on May 1st. This is the day Orthodox Christians traditionally receive the Sacrament of Holy Unction. On Holy Thursday, we observe Christ’s betrayal, His arrest, trial and subsequent Crucifixion on the Cross. On Holy Friday we witness His un-nailing from the Cross and His burial in the tomb. On Holy Saturday evening at midnight, we have the Anastasis or Resurrection Service followed by the Pascal Divine Liturgy.

We will sing “Xristos Anesti” (“Christ is Risen”) at Pascha and at each church service for the 40 days following Pascha – until Christ’s Ascension into heaven. On the Sunday after Pascha, we remember the disciple, Thomas, and his absence from Christ’s appearance to His Disciples following His Resurrection. Christ appeared, again, to the Disciples in the Upper Room, where Thomas finally “believed.” We encourage you to participate in as many services as you can.

Another major occurrence in May is our 21st annual Greek Festival, scheduled for May 17, 18 and 19. We need everyone’s help to assure a successful event. We will be assembling some of the food and pastries during the week of our Festival in preparation of serving it over the weekend. Please see the Festival Co-Chairs, Nick Saffo and Dr. David Snow, or a Booth Chair and volunteer to work at this year’s Festival. Remember, the festival takes our entire community and the

workdays are more than the three of the actual festival! Everyone is invited to come help.

We will have thousands of guests on our church grounds during the Festival. Greet them and thank them for attending and supporting our Parish. This is our opportunity to share our Orthodox faith; Greek food & pastries; and our rich Hellenic heritage, including our music, dance and art. Hundreds of guests will take tours of our sanctuary and hear presentations on the Orthodox Church during our Festival.

This year, we plan to hold introductory classes on the Orthodox Church over several weeks following the Festival. We plan to share information with Festival visitors who wanted to learn more about our Orthodox faith.

Best wishes to all Parishioners for a good Pascha.

“Xristos Anesti; Christ is Risen!”“Alethos Anesti; Truly He is Risen!”

“Everything we do is an opportunity for outreach and

evangelism!”

PhiloptochosMary Beth Miliotis

We invite you to join us for our "end of the year" celebration scheduled for Thursday, May 30th. Details will follow but please save the date. We will also be holding elections that same night for the 2013 - 2015 board members. We want to express our condolences to the family of Angeline Batuyios Saffo who fell asleep in the Lord in the hope of the Resurrection on April 7, 2013. Angeline was a member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society for many years in addition to serving in the role as President. May her memory be eternal.

Hellenic School & AHEPAAlexandros Theodoropoulos

On Sunday, March 31st, 2013, we had a great and very successful Hellenic Independence Day celebration. Despite the combination of the public school Spring Break and the American Easter holiday in that week, the event was well-attended and, based on the feedback we received, the audience enjoyed it so much! We would like to congratulate Dr. John Anagnost for his wonderful speech and slide presentation with all these stunning paintings pertaining to the Hellenic War of Independence that hadn't been shown before. Regarding our Hellenic School participation, we would like to congratulate our students for the great job they did with their poems and for their participation in the dance performances. Special thanks to our teachers, Anastasia Katris and Yanna Hernandez for working with our students on their poems. Furthermore, we would like to thank Kim & Eleni (daughter) Dandulakis, Angelo, Anastasia and Maria (daughter) Katris, Maryanne & Nicholas (son) Vavalette and Eleni, Georgia (daughter) and Annivas "Eli" (son) Theodoropoulos for decorating the Hellenic Center for the celebration. Moreover, many thanks to Barbara Harris, Yanna Hernandez for volunteering to wash the tablecloths and also for helping to clean up after the event along with Kim Dandulakis, Angelo & Anastasia Katris, Tulio Hernandez and Eleni Pappamihiel. Also, many thanks to our Hellenic School parents that contributed desserts, I

apologize but I don't have their names available. Finally, special thanks to Chris's restaurant for preparing and offering, on behalf of our Hellenic School, the delicious meal we enjoyed before the program started and also to Evangelos Fragos for his valuable assistance in the kitchen. Concluding, many thanks to the rest of our parishioners that contributed to the event and congratulations to the rest of our youth members for their participation with poems, dances and songs as well as to Kitsa for coordinating our celebration’s program. Of course, there are no words capable of thanking enough all of you that attended and helped with your presence and support to make our celebration such a successful event! As we say in Greek, ΚΑΙ ΤΟΥ ΧΡΟΝΟΥ! May God grant us good health so that we would be able to have another successful Hellenic Independence Day celebration next year too!

Please mark your calendars for our End of Year Hellenic School social. It will take place at the Theodoropoulos’s residence on May 24th from 5:30 pm until … and everyone is invited. Please stay tuned for more information that will be posted on our other communications media. For more information please contact Eleni Pappamihiel at [email protected] . Finally, we are looking forward to seeing all of you at our End of Year / Graduation ceremony for our Sunday & Hellenic School ministries as well as our high school/college graduates on Sunday, June 9th, after the Divine Liturgy. Like last year, our Hellenic School students have been working on a short play that they feel excited to present in front of our parish at that event.
