Dear Friends,

As the Church heads into May, we celebrate various feast days (Ascension Day,Pentecost, the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth) as well asremembering a number of holy people: St Philip and St James, Athanasius (Bishopof Alexandria 373 CE), the English Saints and Martyrs of the Reformation Era, Julianof Norwich, Matthias the Apostle, Caroline Chisholm (Social Reformer 1877), Dunstan(Archbishop of Canterbury and a restorer of Monastic life 988 CE), John and CharlesWesley, The Venerable Bede (735 CE), Augustine (the first archbishop of Canterbury605 CE), Josephine Butler (Social Reformer 1906).

It is worth pausing to remember that these people that the Church knows by name areonly a few of the very many holy people who have tried to follow Christ throughout theages. And, when one looks through the list above, one also realises what a mixtureof people there are who would call themselves Jesus’ disciples. Those in the Religiouslife, evangelists, teachers, historians, those who responded to the injustices of theirday and worked hard trying to change Society’s attitudes, those who dared to standup for what they believed to be right and sometimes lost their lives for taking theirstand.

In this season of Easter, when we ponder the power of God working through humanweakness, restoring us to new life in Christ, we realise that God works in every typeof human being. Christians come in all shapes and sizes carrying all sorts of God-givengifts to share with others. The one thing they share in common is this faith in God whoacts mightily, who defeats death and evil. This is the Body of Christ – the Church, ofwhich we are members. Throughout Easter-tide, let’s allow God to work his powerthrough us to unite us, to raise us to new life and to transform us into being more likeChrist.

I’ll end with a verse from a hymn that we sing at All Saints’ tide:

Rejoice in God’s saints, today and all days:a world without saints forgets how to praise.

In loving, in living, they prove it is true –the way of self-giving, Lord, leads us to you.

With love and prayers for a blessed Eastertide,

Rev. Canon Jane, Kenchington, 01454 313159, email:[email protected]

Easter Egg Hunt at OldSodbury

Although it waswindy, childrenat Sunday'sservice had ahappy fewminutesenjoying anEaster Egg hunt

(while the adults listened to Jane'sSermon), although this year it was smallEaster bunnies they were searching for.I think we found them all as they were allhiding not too far away from the door. They were helped by Tony and Frances, and not too much chocolate was eatenbefore lunch. The adults had to settle forcoffee and biscuits after the Service

Old Sodbury’s Lent LunchOn Sunday 25th  March, following ourMorning Praise Service, we held our LentLunch.  It  is becoming an annual event, and although there were not so many whocould stay this time, we all enjoyed a timeof fellowship and catch-up, which we don’talways get the chance to do after theservices.  We supplied Soup and a Sweet, with soups ranging from celery to chicken. The sweets were a selection of cakes andsponges, that we could not manage to getthrough.  However, Val spotted a group ofpassing walkers, so she guided them infor tea or coffee and cake. Lunch was freewith donations going to the Bishop'sEaster Appeal. With all of  us (and thewalkers) we were pleased to be able tosend on just  a few pence short of £100,which made all the hard work worthwhile.Val Walker

Unanswered prayerThe vicar's 5 year-old daughter noticedthat her father always paused and bowedhis head for a moment before starting hissermon. One day, she asked him why.'Well, Dear,' he began, proud that hisdaughter was so observant of his messag-es. 'I'm asking the Lord to help me preacha good sermon.' 'How come He doesn'tanswer?' she asked.

Julian of Norwich - in a(hazel)nut shell. On May 8th, the Church of England keepsthe memorial of the 14th century Englishmystic, Julian of Norwich. In recent times,Julian has inspired many to a renewed lifeof prayer and a deeper appreciation of theChristian life. Yet, we know few facts aboutJulian for certain and what we do know mayseem rather unappealing to 21st centuryeyes. She lived in Norwich, and at some point tookup the life of an Anchoress. The anchoriticlife meant a withdrawal from the normal dailyroutine, into a solitary life of contemplation.Often, and in the case of Julian, theanchoress would be walled up into a celladjoining the church, for the rest of her life.Through a squint in the wall, it would bepossible to observe the church servicesbeing celebrated and receive communion.Through a hatch to the outside world, foodcould be brought and spiritual wisdomoffered to visitors. During a prolonged andserious illness, Julian experienced a seriesof visions of Jesus Christ, particularly hissuffering and death. She noted them downand after many years of reflection wrotethem out in full along with her thoughts inwhat we now know simply as the Revelations.Life in the fourteenth century was no bed ofroses; yet surrounded by war, disease, famine, flood, and religious collapse, Julianis able to write that much quoted phrase:‘All shall be well, and all shall be well, andall manner of things shall be well.’It is for her optimism that she is mostremembered. Today we might be inclined todismiss her for naivety or even madness. But Julian’s optimism is neither a form ofdenial nor soft soap in times of trouble. ForJulian, Christ’s outpouring of blood wassynonymous with, and matched by, God’sabundant love.Today, parishes up and down the countryrun contemplative prayer groups known as

Julian Cells, her shrine in Norwich isvisited as a place of pilgrimage andprayer, and an Anglican Order of Monksand Nuns has been founded under herpatronage in the USA. You can find outmore about these by using the links below. In a (hazel)nut shell, Julian is still able tospeak to us from her cell window today, ifwe choose to visit her.Ian Yemmwww.julianmeetings.orgwww.julianofnorwich.orgwww.orderofjulian.org

Kibera Fire Relief

A few weeks ago, the Turning Point Trust(a Benefice mission link) opened theirthird centre in another area of Kibera –Laini Saba, staffed by a Pastor and asocial worker. Using the model that hasworked so well in their other centres, theystarted by establishing contact with needychildren, with a view to helping them intoeducation and away from the streets. On 24 March, a fire swept through thisarea of the slum, destroying hundreds ofhomes. Although there was no loss of life, people lost all the meagre possessionsthey had - shelter, beds, food and clothing.Christine and I arrived in Nairobi the fol-lowing day, and were quickly pressed into

help-ingwiththe re-lief ef-fort.JonPar-sons

(Field Director) takes up the story…..Only one week ago I was in Kibera stand-ing amongst the ruins of people’s homes, seeing the looks of hopelessness on theirfaces. What a wonderful response wehave received from those who saw theimages and video, and responded to theplight these families were in. We have farexceeded our target, which means we

have been able to provide so much morerelief than we had envisaged. On Tues-day, we provided food basics and nearly1,000 blankets to those whose homeshad been burned, many of whom weresleeping outside. Then in another distri-bution effort on Friday, we provided mat-tresses, cooking stoves, soap, and morefood, to around 500 people.Over the coming weeks we will be lookingat more long-term ways that Turning Pointcan support the community as it rebuilds,at ways that we can shine God’s light intodark places. We value your continuedsupport as we seek His way to demon-strate His love to His people. We are exhausted, but so grateful to somany of you who have responded sogenerously. We have been overwhelmedby the response, and praise God for howHe has called members of His family tosupport their brothers and sisters in Christ. We pass on the thanks of these familiesto you, and pray that you would be bless-ed by God, as you have sought to blessothers.I (David) was able to help with the firstfood and blanket distribution just fourdays after the fire. The school that Han-

nah andIsaac at-tend putout anappealfor cloth-ing andChristineand Ihelpedsort

through the hundreds of garments thatcame in, and bag them up for distribution.Landlords have been quickly rebuildingthe houses (wood, mud and corrugatediron) so people can go back home. One

The Rev Val BexonIt was announcedon Sunday 1 April(and it was nojoke!) that Val hasbeen appointedRector of theErmin WestBenefice. This Benefice

comprises 9 churches (Birdlip,Brimpsfield, Daglingworth, DuntisbourneAbbots, Duntisbourne Rous, Edgeworth,Miserden, Syde and Winstone). She willenjoy chairing 7 PCCs meetings and 7APCMs!On a more serious note, Val has donereally well – this was the first post ofresponsibility that she applied for and theInterview Panel liked her and decided thatshe would be the best person for the post. That shouldn’t surprise us here, havingbenefited from her ministry for the last two

and a bit years. It will be their gain and ourloss. But we have to remember (and bethankful) that Val was an unexpected giftto us when she arrived in this Benefice atthe beginning of February 2010. For me,she has been a marvellous colleague andI thank God for her.We can also thank God for Stuart and forall he has brought to the Benefice –supporting Val; creating the new Outlook;taking photographs; working with us forthe Crib Festival; encouraging us to getinvolved with the Bishop’s Pilgrimageinitiative and many other things. We willmiss him as well.Val and Stuart’s last Sunday will be 26August, when I propose that we have a10.30am Benefice Service at ChippingSodbury, to enable all the churches tocome together and bid them farewell. Valwill be licensed to her new benefice at aservice on Sunday 23 September at 3pm.Jane Kenchington

big advantage of a relatively small, “onthe ground” operation like Turning Point isthat they can direct relief precisely topeople inneed, andavoid diver-sionthroughcorruption.We werefull of admi-ration forthe wisdomand efficiency of TP’s work. In the longterm this is likely to increase their credibil-ity amongst this community. It was a priv-ilege to witness a small part of theKingdom of God being built. Statement from BishopMichael on the retirement ofArchbishop Rowan Williams

Rowan Williams has been, in my view, anoutstanding Archbishop of Canterbury, patiently holding together the Church ofEngland and the worldwide AnglicanCommunion with courage and wisdom. Ata time of speedy cultural change in churchand society that has been a complex andthankless task.I don't know of anybody who could havedone it better. Ten years is long enoughfor anyone to carry such a burden and Iam sure the Archbishop is right to standdown at this point, to return to theacademic world where his intellectualskills can continue to be well used, and tomake way for fresh leadership in thechurch as we face the challenges that lieahead of us. I will always be grateful forhis ministry as archbishop and for hispersonal kindness.I am glad that one of Archbishop Rowan'slast visits to dioceses in the Church ofEngland will be to Gloucester in July. Herehe is assured of a warm welcome. Wehope that, as he stands down, he will findmuch here that encourages him about thevitality of church life in Gloucestershire.+Michael Gloucester:

Help choose the newArchbishop of CanterburyThe Church of England has announcedthat, for the first time, the process to ap-point a new Archbishop of Canterburywill begin with an extensive public con-sultation, including an opportunity forpeople to submit their views via Twitter. The Crown Nominations Commission willapparently also be seeking opinions from'senior figures in other faiths, the secularworld and the life of the nation.' The con-sultation is scheduled to conclude at theend of May, so get “Tweeting”.

The Diocesan LetterCelebrating the Diamond JubileeDuring the last 60 years the Queen hasserved the country and the Commonwealthwith an unfailing sense of duty. Dutysounds a rather old-fashioned virtuenowadays, but it points to a combination ofcommitment, service and sacrifice, embodied in Jesus, and captured in thesewords from Philippians: 'Do nothing out ofselfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather inhumility value others above yourselves, notlooking to your own interests but each ofyou to the interests of others'.The Queen's sense of duty has beensustained by her faith in Christ which shere-affirmed in her 2011 Christmasbroadcast:: 'God sent into the world aunique person..... a Saviour, with the powerto forgive. Itis in forgiveness that we feel the powerof God's love.'The Queen has expressed her hopethat the Jubilee will be 'an opportunityfor people to come together in a spirit ofneighbourliness and celebration of theirown communities'. At a time when manypeople are uncertain about their future, this year also reminds us of the Biblicalthemes of Jubilee – a time forcommunity life to be restored and for themarginalised to be liberated.  TheDiamond  Jubilee  therefore provides  awonderful opportunity for churches towork with others on renewing a deepersense of community and inclusion. To encourage this a range of ideasand resources are available from
