Mary Mother of the Church

May 13, 2020 Dear Friends in Christ, Our April 5 bulletin included an article which addressed the financial impact of the governor’s Safer at Home or-der. On April 30, status update reports were given to the Finance Council; on May 7, those reports were presented to the Pastoral Council. Now we are providing an update to everyone. First of all, we are not facing an immediate crisis! Many parishioners have maintained their regular offertory con-tribution – for which we are very thankful! After our April 5 financial update, we learned that the Wisconsin Saf-er at Home guidelines would continue until after Memorial Day and Bishop Callahan extended the “no public Masses” policy through May. The current concern is what a re-opening or recovery period will look like. There are many unknowns and conflicting reports. With that background, here are some statistics and then some information on something we have done to bolster our situation. In late-April, the Diocese conducted a financial survey of all parishes to look for possible ways to help parishes. The following are comparisons from our regular Sunday Church Support: March 2019 = $67,556 March 2020 = $53,369 The first three weeks of April 2019 = $48,836 The first three weeks of April 2020 = $39,388 Prior to the pandemic restrictions, our operating budget had been having a successful year. The parish’s net Oper-ating Surplus on March 31, 2020 was $32,352 (even with the lower income in March). However, by the end of April and a full month of no public Masses, the parish’s net Operating Surplus on April 30, 2020 was already cut in half: $16,764. Another indicator of a downward trend is our Scrip sales: April 2019 = $64,980 April 2020 = $37,840 (42% drop) In addition, we had to cancel significant fundraisers (estimated net profit in parenthesis): a second Lenten Fish Fry (~$4,000); the PCCW Spring Rummage Sale (~$3,500); Parish Hall Rentals to outside groups (~$2,500); and our Spring Chicken Que (~$10,000). In addition, the Men’s Club will lose $3,500 with no Riverfest clean-up; and it is uncertain if the Men’s Club Softball Tournament will be held in August. We project we may have a $20,000-$30,000 operating shortfall by June 30 when our fiscal year concludes. However, there is some good news! We are current with all our financial obligations, including the Aquinas Cath-olic School subsidy. The number of parishioners who have signed up for WeShare (electronic contributions) has increased from 168 in December to 245 as of May 16. In addition, we met our Diocesan Annual Appeal goal of $100,690 due to a generous gift from a parishioner. Thank you to the many donors who responded to the Dioce-san Annual Appeal! The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act allocated significant funds to help small busi-nesses keep workers employed amid the pandemic and economic downturn known as the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) through the Small Business Administration (SBA), including 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. On April 6, Bishop Callahan expected every parish to apply for the PPP loan. The application amount was based on verification of our payroll for the past year. We received a PPP loan on April 24 totaling $50,860. The interest rate is 1%. (The loan proceeds are not included in any of the previous statistics above.)

• EXPRESS silently your sorrow for any sins you committed, remembering that all sin offends God. • PRAY the Prayer to the Holy Spirit a second time, silently from the heart, more slowly than the first time. • CHOOSE a word or phrase from the Prayer that stood out for you. Silently think about it, speak with God about it. • THANK the Holy Spirit in your own words for a blessing received. • ASK the Lord for any request that is in your heart. MMOC Patronal Feast Pope Francis has named the Monday after Pentecost to be observed as the annual feast day of Mary, Mother of the Church. This is a moveable feast (based on the date of Easter) and this year's observance is June 1. We will have Mass posted online at 7:30 AM and we will announce the Man and Woman of the Year before the Final Blessing.

Requiescant in Pace Please pray for the repose of the soul of Dick Fitzpatrick and Leroy Strasser. Our prayers and sincere sympathy are extended to the family and friends who mourn their loss. Eternal rest grant onto them, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them.

Family Life

Novena for Pentecost A novena consists of praying a prayer during a period of nine days for a specific intention. The Pentecost Novena, in honor of the Holy Spirit, is the oldest of all novenas since it was first prayed at the direction of Jesus when He sent His Apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Spirit on the first Pentecost. This Novena is addressed to the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity as a powerful plea for your personal intentions. Take this opportunity to come to know the Holy Spirit in a much deeper way and allow Him to guide, strengthen and console you. The Pentecost Novena will be prayed from Friday, May 22 to Saturday, May 30. Sunday, May 31, is the Feast of Pentecost. Holy Spirit, please give me the grace to quiet down inside so as to become aware of Your love for me. Holy Spirit, I want to spend this time with You. Help me to give You my full attention & to pray from my heart. O Holy Spirit, Beloved of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen and console me. Tell me what I ought to do and command me to do it. I promise to submit to everything that You ask of me and to accept all that You allow to happen to me. Just show me what is Your will, O Holy Spirit.

The loan may be forgiven (partially or in full) for specified expenses incurred during the 8-week period following the date of the loan. Items considered for loan forgiveness include: Payroll Costs – at least 75% of PPP funds must be used for payroll costs, including salaries and wages; employee benefits; expenses for group health care, including insurance premiums; retirement benefits; and state and local taxes assessed on compensation. Other Expenses – not to exceed 25% of PPP funds, includes electricity, gas, water, transportation, telephone, and internet. Eight weeks after the loan closing, we can begin to submit a request to the bank for PPP loan forgiveness by sub-mitting all required documentation. The bank has 60 days to request a SBA decision regarding loan forgiveness. Six months from the loan closing, we are required to begin making principle and interest payments due on any “unforgiven” portion of the loan. Any unforgiven portion of the loan must be returned or paid back within 2 years from closing. There is no pre-payment penalty if the loan is retired before the maturity date. Since this is a new, emergency enacted program, regulations and administrative specifications for the SBA loan/forgiveness process are still being written. The PPP loan will provide a great relief for the parish. The Safer at Home guidelines to deal with the coronavirus pandemic has created many anxieties. Many house-holds have experienced layoffs or cutbacks, others have had illnesses (not necessarily COVID-19 related), and many others have adjusted work schedules due to school closures. How do we handle this stress? Jesus tells us our Heavenly Father knows what we need. (See Matthew 6:25-34; it will be worth it!) Worry doesn’t produce good fruit; otherwise, the most anxious person would be the most blessed person. Trusting in God’s goodness is a blessed way to live! Please be assured of my prayers for you and your loved ones. May Jesus in His great mercy keep us safe and in good health! Yours in our Risen Lord,
