Infrastructure The teacher needs a computer with MAXQDA as well as a projector to demonstrate MAXQDA for everyone. Each participant needs a computer with MAXQDA installed. They can either bring their own computer or you can teach the workshop in a pc lab that has computers equipped with MAXQDA. If somebody does not have a MAXQDA license, they can download the free 30-day demo to use during the workshop. Example Files MAXQDA Example Projects When you install MAXQDA it comes with example projects in English, Spanish, Portuguese and German that you can use to teach others the use of MAXQDA. You can find them in MAXQDA by clicking “Example projects” in the welcome dialogue at the start of MAXQDA. If the welcome dialogue is not displayed at start-up or if MAXQDA is already open you can open the dialogue anytime with Help > Welcome dialogue. The topics of the example projects are Life Satisfaction (English), Climate Change (German), and Medical Health (Spanish). Interviews from MAXQDA Example Projects If you want to work with textual data you can export all of the documents from any MAXQDA example project and give these files to your participants, so they can import them into a new project. Export all documents at once by going to Project > Export > All documents. Survey Data and Focus Groups If you want to teach working with data from a survey or work with focus group transcripts, you can download an example project that includes both kinds of data from this link: http://www.maxqda.com/download/example-data-financial-downturn.zip We thank Christina Silver and Ann Lewins for allowing the use of their example data set, which they created for the book: Using Software in Qualitative Research. 2nd edition 2014, Los Angeles/London//New Delhi/Singapore/Washington DC, SAGE Publications Ltd. Videos If you want to teach how to analyze videos with MAXQDA you can search secondary analysis databases like the UK Data Service: http://ukdataservice.ac.uk. MAXQDA Ambassador - Workshop Guide

Based on our experience here are a few tips how to teach a MAXQDA workshop – they can be helpful both for teaching a big workshop with 20 participants or if you are just introducing new colleagues to the software.

Infrastructure The teacher needs a computer with MAXQDA as well as a projector to demonstrate MAXQDA for everyone.

Each participant needs a computer with MAXQDA installed. They can either bring their own computer or you can

teach the workshop in a pc lab that has computers equipped with MAXQDA. If somebody does not have a

MAXQDA license, they can download the free 30-day demo to use during the workshop.

Example Files MAXQDA Example Projects When you install MAXQDA it comes with example projects in English, Spanish, Portuguese and German that you

can use to teach others the use of MAXQDA. You can find them in MAXQDA by clicking “Example projects” in the welcome dialogue at the start of MAXQDA. If the welcome dialogue is not displayed at start-up or if MAXQDA is

already open you can open the dialogue anytime with Help > Welcome dialogue.

The topics of the example projects are Life Satisfaction (English), Climate Change (German), and Medical Health

(Spanish).

Interviews from MAXQDA Example Projects If you want to work with textual data you can export all of the documents from any MAXQDA example project and

give these files to your participants, so they can import them into a new project. Export all documents at once by going to Project > Export > All documents.

Survey Data and Focus Groups If you want to teach working with data from a survey or work with focus group transcripts, you can download an

example project that includes both kinds of data from this link:

http://www.maxqda.com/download/example-data-financial-downturn.zip We thank Christina Silver and Ann Lewins for allowing the use of their example data set, which they created for the book: Using Software in Qualitative Research. 2nd edition 2014, Los Angeles/London//New Delhi/Singapore/Washington DC, SAGE Publications Ltd.

Videos If you want to teach how to analyze videos with MAXQDA you can search secondary analysis databases like the UK

Data Service: http://ukdataservice.ac.uk. Please note that this kind of data is usually not available for commercial purpose.

MAXQDA Ambassador - Workshop Guide

Literature Using MAXQDA is not a research method. MAXQDA can be used for many methodological approaches. We would suggest you include basic information about qualitative research in your workshop. A good literature resource is the

textbook “Qualitative Text Analysis” which was written by the main developer of MAXQDA, Prof. Dr. Udo Kuckartz.

Qualitative Text Analysis.

A Guide to Methods, Practise and Using Software.

Udo Kuckartz

SAGE Publications, London, 2014

How can you analyse narratives, interviews, field notes, or focus group data?

Qualitative text analysis is ideal for these types of data and this textbook provides a hands-on

introduction to the method and its theoretical underpinnings. It offers step-by-step instructions for

implementing the three principal types of qualitative text analysis: thematic, evaluative, and type-

building. Special attention is paid to how to present your results and use qualitative data analysis

software packages, which are highly recommended for use in combination with qualitative text analysis since they allow for fast, reliable, and more accurate analysis. The book shows in detail

how to use software, from transcribing the verbal data to presenting and visualizing the results.

The book is intended for Master’s and Doctoral students across the social sciences and for all

researchers concerned with the systematic analysis of texts of any kind.
