Maui Hiking Guide
HO’OHELE WĀWAE MAMAO (hiking)
Waihe’e Ridge Trail - 4/5 Difficulty: This scenic trail will take guests along a ridge that
overlooks the Waihe’e Valley and Maui’s north western shoreline. The trail is about 2.6 miles
each way and features opportunities for pictures. Along the way guests will notice different
climate and vegetation changes as they continue to hike. This trail may be slippery if there has
been recent rainfall and at times has several steep inclines. Stay on trail at all times.
Lahaina Pali Trail - 5/5 difficulty: This trail will take guests along the dry portion of the West Maui Moun-
tains. There are very scenic views of the neighboring islands and Maui along the trail. There is very little shade
and typically it is recommended to hike this trail in the early morning. Guests may hike 1/2 way and turn back.
Pipiwai Trail (Bamboo Forest) - 3/5 difficulty: The Pipiwai Trail is commonly known as
the “Bamboo Forest”. This 4 mile (each way) journey will take guest by scenic overlooks,
through bamboo forests, and near beautiful waterfalls. Guests will be hiking over a variety of
terrain such as clay, rocks, dirt, mud, and wooden platforms. The beginning of the trail is not
very interesting but builds in excitement as you continue along the trail. Bug spay is helpful.
Twin Falls (Road to Hana) - 2/5 difficulty: This accessible trail is located along the Road to Hana. The trail
is very well traveled and maintained where guests will be able to see several beautiful waterfalls. Pending on
the rainfall, the trail is typically open to the public and has a fruit stand at the entry.
Kings Trail (La Perouse Bay)- 3/5 difficulty: This very scenic trail will take guest along
the southern tip of Maui and is where the last volcanic eruptions on Maui happened nearly 300
years ago. The trail starts with a shaded hike along the shoreline and opens to a very large
clearing where the lava fields start. The beautiful colors of the ocean and the lava make for
outstanding pictures. We recommending hiking this trail early in the day due to the heat/wind.

HO’OHELE WĀWAE MAMAO (hiking)
Haleakala National Park - 3/5 Difficulty: The national park has a network of trails that
range from 0.25 miles to 11+ miles long. The most popular hiking trail in the park is the Keone-
he’ehe’e (Sliding Sands Trail) which will take guest down about 1000ft into the crater. Condi-
tions at the summit can change quickly and it is always best to dress in layers as temperatures
and winds change very quickly. Please be aware this is a high altitude hike.
Polipoli State Park - 3/5 difficulty: The State Park is located along the slopes of Haleakala. Guests will be
able to experience a variety of trails that tend to be rather lengthy (several miles each) and go through a variety
of forest such as Pine and Redwood. At times high winds have blocked the road to access this park.
Iao Valley (Iao Needle) - 2/5 difficulty: This now peaceful and tranquil area of the island
was once where intense battles on Maui where fought. Signage around the park will further
provide guests with a great educational experience. Iao Valley has mostly paved sidewalks with
steps. The park also features a beautiful stream in which it is common for local residents to be
around the streams during the summer months to cool off. Paid parking is required here.
Hiking Tips & Recommendations– Maui is a very special place to us and we would like to ensure that
all guests have ability to explore the island to their ability. Trails have been rated based on our own experience.
