Greetings friends,

In looking back at the last year, I am amazed by all that the Museum has accomplished—and I must acknowledge the amazing staff for undertaking such a Herculean task and completing it on time, under budget, and with no injuries (to person or object). I know that they made it look easy, but it was a tremendous undertaking.

The project began with our Collections Manager Wayne Eldred leading the charge to photograph and catalogue the tens of thousands of objects in our collections, before carefully wrapping and boxing them. With the help of a part-time contract worker and two wonderful volunteers, Wayne completed the task in a matter of weeks! Simultaneously, our Archivist Michael Dooling and our Curators Cynthia Roznoy and Chelsea Garth prepared our massive archive and art collections for removal. Finally, under the direction of Stephanie Harris, our Director of Operations, the entire staff broke up into teams and worked daily to carefully move the collections to Rose Hill and then up three flights of stairs to store these precious treasures in the house. Much of the moving was in the servants’ quarters, with steep and narrow staircases that Victorian servants used instead of the family’s grand staircase. The tricky spaces made the move even more challenging. With perseverance and the generous support of Donald Dostie and his family’s moving business, Marie’s Movers, the staff completed the task well in advance of our opening in April.

Our new home has been wonderfully received and our programs and mini-exhibitions have brought thousands of people through the door. Our improvised Museum has also served our education staff and docents well in working out the new patterns for the school tours. With more than 90 children making their way through the parlors we anticipated bedlam, but the close quarters and revised tour has worked well to inspire even greater learning among the City’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th-graders that visit us throughout the school year. The amazing support of the Art Bridges Foundation, which loaned us Jeff Koons’ One Ball Total Equilibrium Tank and the funds for the complimentary programming, has attracted new audiences to the museum and served to strengthen our connections to our neighborhood.

I look forward to seeing the transformation of the site in the coming year. Your support of our continued programming during construction and for the construction project itself is crucial to our success.

I am excited to see what this upcoming year brings for the Museum and its supporters!

MissionThe Mattatuck Museum is a center of art and history, a gathering place that nurtures creativity and learning through transformative experiences to encourage a deeper understanding of ourselves and our heritage.

VisionThe Mattatuck Museum will be known as a vibrant destination inspiring visitors from New England and beyond.

2019 IN SHORT

Greetings friends & supporters,

The Mattatuck today is an active and ever-vibrant place teeming with visitors from all walks of life, coming to the Museum to participate in one of our many educational programs and exploring the galleries. With our exciting renovation project in progress at the West Main Street building, this is a perfect time for us to re-establish our mark in downtown Waterbury.

For the time being, as you know, the Museum has moved its operations into Rose Hill, the grand old mansion on Prospect Street filled with rich Waterbury history. While the Museum continues to offer its popular programs such as tai chi in the galleries, Memories @ The MATT, and school tours for all 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students from Waterbury Public Schools, the staff at The MATT has been hard at work devising new programs and events to offer at Rose Hill—bringing a new life and color to this much-loved house.

Those who visit Rose Hill learn not only about the house itself, but also the fascinating stories of the prominent Waterbury families who lived there. This past year, the Museum sold out two of its lectures with Rose Hill historian Christina Volpe and plans to offer others in 2020. Our ability to host events within the galleries at Rose Hill has been somewhat limited by space restrictions, but we’ve managed to expand our reach off-site to various downtown locations, such as Post University, Chase Collegiate School, and even the Waterbury Green.

While we all eagerly look forward to the day the “new” Museum opens, the time spent at Rose Hill has allowed us to develop stronger partnerships within the Waterbury community—showing the promise of what is yet to come.

Thank you for your continued, vitally important support and your belief in our mission. I hope to see you soon @ The MATT!

Best wishes,

RELOCATIONWith the Museum building at 144 West Main Street under construction, the Mattatuck has moved to a temporary location at Rose hill located at 63 Prospect Street. A team of contractors, electricians, and painters prepared Rose Hill during January and February 2019 for collections, staff, and visitors. Cleaning, painting, and repairs were conducted, as well as improvements to existing telecommunications infrastructure, security cameras, plumbing, and climate control to allow the Museum to operate in the space. From February to March of 2019, staff and volunteers moved all objects, artworks, archival materials, and office spaces from the West Main Street building to the house at Rose Hill. Education and curatorial staff led the process of installing the Museum’s collection on the first floor of the building in order to continue all school tours and share with visitors a representative sample of the collection. The space opened to the public on Monday, April 22 and the Museum hosted a free Open House on Saturday, May 11, which welcomed over 150 visitors.

CAMPAIGN UPDATEIn spring, the Museum was able to meet the Grand Club challenge! The Museum now has just under $1 million left to raise to complete this project. Gifts, of any amount, make a difference as we raise the funds needed to create a Museum for the twenty-first century.

Construction started with a bang in June as the 1980s addition was demolished and groundwork began for the foundation of the new addition. Construction on the exterior of the building slowed in the fall after the discovery of hazardous materials. Nevertheless, interior renovations have continued at full pace. We are excited to welcome you to the new Museum in spring 2021.

THE PROJECTIn 2018, the Mattatuck Museum engaged the architectural firm of Ann Beha Architects (ABA) to develop a plan to reshape the Museum while continuing to be a welcoming, inclusive, stimulating and enriching community anchor. ABA’s plan for the “new” Mattatuck Museum includes an extensive 14,000 square foot renovation to the existing space and an addition of almost 7,000 square feet to enhance educational programming, collections storage and exhibitions.

With this expansion, The MATT will proudly take its place in the cultural and artistic transformation of downtown Waterbury. The successful completion of this campaign will secure the Mattatuck’s legacy for future generations. It will enable the Museum to grow with confidence to its rightful spot among the most important cultural institutions in Connecticut and one of the finest regional museums in the country.

Thank you to all of those who have already given to the campaign (page 21). There are many ways to contribute to the campaign and see your name listed next year:

CURATOR'S CORNEROur move to temporary quarters at Rose Hill this Spring has instigated new thinking about the methods we use to present and educate. Limited wall space at Rose Hill offers the opportunity to present smaller, more intimate exhibitions—art or history that has a personal story such as the recent exhibit, Caring Hands that addressed the subject of Alzheimer’s Disease. Temporary shows continue both at Rose Hill and off-site at downtown venues and many upcoming shows are community-organization based.

A new method to share and display our growing collections is via the Matt website. Two online exhibitions now bring art to you, the viewer, in your own space, during a time you choose. The first, Edward Balthazar: Urban Artist features Waterbury scenes that the artist produced during the 1930s and 1940s. Balthazar’s paintings and etchings celebrate his hometown in views of city and country as diverse as the natural gas works and the Pomperaug River. The second, Women’s Sphere Updated presents twenty-five works from the MATT’s collection. It is presented chronologically and demonstrates a variety of subjects and styles in painting, photography, and needlework. The exhibition also reflects the growth of the collection through purchases guided by the Museum’s Collections Committee and by gifts from generous donors. Find these exhibits on our website at mattmuseum.org/exhibitions.

Working with Education Director, Heather Whitehouse, we resumed the off-site program “Tours with the Curator.” This educational (and entertaining) teaching method takes us to other art and history institutions where we broaden our knowledge base and contextualize the works we know in the MATT collection. Our visits to the Smith College Museum of Art and to the Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar this year were great fun. We look forward to a trip next June to the Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio in Lenox, Massachusetts.

Please join us at Rose Hill, on line, and in our travels. We will learn and enjoy together.

GIVING ROUNDUPDear Supporters,

This past year has been one full of excitement! During this time of transition and transformation, we are very grateful to all of YOU—our members, donors, sponsors, and other friends of the Museum. Your support enables the Museum to continue to fulfill our mission of being a center of art and history and a gathering place nurturing creativity and learning through transformative experiences. It also assures that we can continue to offer programming and exhibitions that serve the entire community during this period of change.

We hope that you will continue to give in 2020—whether through membership, the annual fund, the capital campaign, or by attending our fundraising events. Your generosity is more important now than before. For more information, visit us online at mattmuseum.org or call us at (203) 753-0381 x130.

Thank you for your past support, we are excited for what the future holds!

Warm wishes, Cyndi Tolosa, Director of Development

2019 SPECIAL EVENTS This year, the Museum’s special events drew over 700 people and raised over $130,000 to support the Mattatuck’s numerous educational and curatorial programs. These events create opportunities for Museum and community supporters alike to join together and celebrate art, history, and The MATT. This past year, the Museum hosted several fundraising events, concluding with the Brass Button Award which honored committed community members Selim and Linda Noujaim. Because of the ongoing construction at our permanent location, and the limited space within Rose Hill, the Museum plans to host many of its 2020 events off-site at various Waterbury locations.

We hope you can join us this coming year for more Adventures in Art & History throughout the Waterbury region. We promise you will have a great time!

The Mattatuck Museum is an essential member of both the cultural and business communities of the greater Waterbury area. The Mattatuck serves the same region as our law firm. Our corporate support of the Museum and its programs allows our law firm to give back to the community we serve as lawyers.
