A Note From the DirectorOn behalf of our Board and Staff, Greetings and Happy New Year!

As the new year begins I’m pleased to share that 2017 was a productive and inspired year filled with exciting shows, programs and special events culminating with the beautiful exhibition of works by Jane Peterson (p. 7). Thanks to “Jane” the Mattatuck Museum name will be traveling nationally to three venues in 2018. The exhibition of works by this trailblazing artist has garnered great media attention, as well as a tremendous response from our members and visitors. If you have not yet seen the show I urge you to visit before it closes on January 28th.

2017 was a year of change, as we said goodbye to several colleagues and welcomed some new members to our staff. If you see new faces in the galleries please introduce yourself—we love to meet members of The MATT family.

This winter you can look forward to another spectacular exhibition lineup. Works by renowned rock & roll photographer Jim Marshall will be on view in Peace: Love, Rock and Revolution (p. 10). We also welcome artists Claudia DeMonte and Ed McGowin for Mixed Marriage (p. 10), a witty exhibition that explores the work of these two provocative artists coming together to affect social change through the visual arts.

If you are embarking on a New Year's resolution I encourage you to browse the pages of this brochure to find opportunities for yoga and tai chi in our galleries (p. 14); studio classes to start or rekindle your passion for art-making (p. 19); art talks to engage your intellectual side (p. 15); or meet-ups, bus trips and after-hours events to bring a little adventure to your day (pp. 17-18). Whatever your goal for the new year, The MATT is an avenue to help get you there.

Will you be participating in Black History Month activities? Are you home with the kids for Presidents' Day? Consider celebrating with the Museum and attending our themed Family Day activities (p. 21).

Finally, I want to encourage you to take a break from the cold weather and join us for our 5th annual FEBTOBERFEST (p. 16). This year we are adding a sampling of American wines to the Connecticut beer & spirits that we all love. We are thrilled to be partnering with Nutmeg Fine Wine & Spirits and thank the Arts & Tourism Commission, City of Waterbury for their support of the event.

Curator's CornerVisitors sometimes ask me what a curator’s job is. My answer often depends on the day, but generally art curators have five major duties: safeguard art objects, connect to art history, display art, interpret and teach, and select new works for the collection. I had the opportunity to pursue all five of these objectives while organizing the large-scale retrospective exhibition, Jane Peterson: At Home and Abroad—the result of a two-year-long research and writing project which opened at the Mattatuck on November 19, 2017.

Celebrated during her lifetime for vibrant paintings, Peterson was a vital link between American Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism. A serendipitous Peterson “find” brought her art to the attention of the Mattatuck's director, Bob Burns. An appreciation of Peterson’s art initiated a project to organize a retrospective of her work. Contacts with colleagues in other institutions assured us of the project’s timeliness. Communications with collectors confirmed the appreciation viewers had for her art and the Museum was determined to present a survey of Peterson’s art and tell her life story. The exhibition and the essays in its accompanying catalogue explore the woman and her oeuvre at home and abroad. Over the next year, this exhibition of more than eighty paintings travels to the Long Island Museum, Columbia Museum of Art and The Hyde Collection.

Working with the Collections Committee we added two Peterson paintings to the collection. Other significant acquisitions included a stunning Guy Pene du Bois painting of a young woman, a lithograph by Thomas Hart Benton and Robert Rauschenberg’s important and autobiographical Ruminations series.

Additionally, a very significant gift from Francis T. Vincent, Jr. (Fay Vincent) has strengthened our historical/archive collection: a complete set of Presidential signatures—nearly all written while the Presidents were in office—from George Washington to George W. Bush..

Sharing information about our collections and exhibitions is a pleasurable part of my job. Don’t hesitate to ask about them when next we meet.

JANE PETERSONAt Home and AbroadJane Peterson was an American Impressionist whose work covered the globe—capturing images from her travels in Venice and Turkey, to scenes from her homes in New York City, Gloucester and Palm Beach. The retrospective at the Mattatuck Museum will be the first museum exhibition of her work in 45 years. It is a survey that showcases the breadth of subjects and locales she painted.

This exhibition captures the spirit of Jane Peterson – an adventurer at heart – and unifies her work to present a complete record of her experiences.

CONNECTED: RELATIONSHIPS WITH MACHINESAndrzej ZielinskiGuest curator: Jennifer Terzian

The machines we use on a daily basis—computers, cell phones, ATM machines, printers—serve as the subject matter of Andrzej Zielinski’s paintings and sculptures. Influenced by the artist's fascination with technology, and with references to historical artistic movements such as ready-made objects and abstract painting, his work reminds viewers of the ever-encroaching technological advancement that comes with using modern-day machines.

Andrzej Zielinski was born in 1976 in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his BFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2004 he earned an MFA in painting from Yale University. He currently splits his time between Berlin, Germany and Lawrence, Kansas.

Supported in part through a gift from Brass Axe Capital to underwrite exhibitions in The Munger Room.

PAINTING WITH A CAMERAJerome SedlockGuest curator: DeBare Saunders

Jerome Sedlock’s abstract imagery is informed by his mechanical engineering and design background. His work follows in the trajectory of abstract photography that had its beginnings in the early 20th-century with the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and the Surrealists. Sedlock’s dramatic photographs emphasize shape, forms, patterns and textures, all rendered under the play of sometimes hard and sometimes subtle light.

Supported in part through a gift from Raymond Learsy to underwrite exhibitions in The Lab.

RUMINATIONSRobert RauschenbergRobert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is an American Modern Master and a forerunner of the Pop Art movement. He was engaged with the print medium since the early 1960s, and with Jasper Johns is identified as starting the contemporary print renaissance.

She is a feminist, he is a social commentator, both believe in affecting social change through the visual arts. This exhibition joins works by each artist in a provocative and witty installation of mixed media sculptures and paintings.

PEACE: LOVE, ROCK AND REVOLUTIONPhotographs by Jim MarshallJim Marshall (1936-2010) is widely acknowledged as one of the premier photographers of the rock 'n' roll era, visually recording the changing times and the explosion of creativity and celebrity in the 1960s. In addition to street scenes of New York and San Francisco, this exhibition demonstrates his quietly intimate style, a merging of fly-on-the-wall observation and portraiture. Among the celebrated rock stars are Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Grateful Dead and The Who.

CANDY ARCADE The Story of Holiday SweetsThe history of holiday candy in America is one that can bring back fond memories for almost anyone. Drawing from the collections of Liz and Mark Kopec dozens of vintage candy boxes and containers are given second lives as ornaments hung on Christmas trees or toys that were used in play.

MEN OF LETTERSThe Presidential SignaturesRecently donated to the Museum by Fay Vincent, this collection of documents signed by every president from the founding fathers to present day, is an important contribution to The MATT's historical collection. Vincent, a Waterbury native and Commissioner of Major League Baseball from 1989 to 1992, has generously donated his collection of presidential autographs to his hometown museum in honor of his parents Alice Lynch Vincent, a Waterbury native, and Francis T. “Fay” Vincent, Sr. of Torrington. They provide a fascinating glimpse of official acts and personal communications of our nation’s leaders.

Items range from a passport signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to a Christmas card sent by George and Barbara Bush with a photo of their children including “Georgie” and “Jebby.”

On view at the Fairfield University Art Museum will be The Holy Name, Art of the Gesu: Bernini and His Age and an exhibition of new work by renowned South African artist William Kentridge in William Kentridge: Universal Archive. Enjoy a private tour with Curator of Education, Michelle DiMarzo examining both exhibits, specifically the masterpieces from the Gesu itself, which have never been exhibited in America before this show. The Holy Name also includes a rich array of paintings, sculptures, objects, drawings, prints and illustrated books borrowed from museums around the country.

Housatonic Art Museum will be exhibiting Pattern, Power, Chaos and Quiet. Through the art of Gloria Garfinkel, Brenda Giegerich, Sandra Gottlieb, Nadene Grey, Stewart Nachmias, John Lyon Paul, Susan Sommer and Eve Stuart you will see the multiple ways these artists capture nature.

ADULT STUDIO CLASSESPRINTMAKING WORKSHOPUsing the work of Robert Rauschenberg as inspiration, learn to combine objects and images into a printed work in this workshop intensive. Roxanne Faber Savage will demonstrate how to create a powerful image using collage, xerox printing, monoprints, transfers, paints, and more. Materials will be provided. Class size limited.

Instructor: Roxanne Faber Savage is an award winning multidisciplinary artist with printmaking as her primary medium.

PAINT TO THE MUSICUse music as an inspiration and source of creative energy as you draw, paint or work in mixed media during this class. A demonstration will be provided before you begin your own artistic journey.

The workshop will start with a short meditation and a lesson in using music to guide your art-making. Music will play while your unique artworks unfold - whether subjective, symbolic or abstract, the path is yours to choose and explore. Materials will be provided.

Instructor: Visual and performing artist Amber Maida is a former winner of our MIXMASTER Juried Members Exhibition.

BIG, BOLD & COLORFUL ACRYLIC PAINTINGBeginners and advanced students alike will learn to paint big, bold and colorful, similar to the fauvist style, in this 4-week acrylic painting session. Fauvism was an avant-garde movement that flourished in France in the early years of the 20th century. The Fauve painters, including Matisse, expressed their spontaneous, often subjective response to nature in bold, undisguised brushstrokes using high-key, vibrant colors. Materials list will be supplied upon registration.

Instructor: Extraordinary painter Christian Césari, originally from Nice, uses the Fauvists as inspiration in works that capture his Connecticut home and experience.

LITHUANIAN FOLK ART EGG DECORATINGThis folk-art experience celebrates the rich cultural legacy of the Baltic country of Lithuania. Participants will learn marguciai, the Lithuanian art of egg decorating, by using the scratch and carve method. Materials will be provided. No experience necessary. Class size limited.

2017 SPECIAL EVENTSEvery year, the Museum’s special events draw over 600 people closer to the Mattatuck and bring in over $90,000 to support educational and curatorial programming. They create opportunities for Museum and community supporters alike to join together and celebrate art, history and The MATT.

This past year the Museum hosted numerous fundraising events culminating in our premier event, the Brass Button, which recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals to the greater Waterbury area for their lifelong commitment to social and cultural enrichment. The 9th Annual Brass Button award honored Jaci Caroll and brought together a warm group of friends and supporters.
