How to Set up the Challenge • Gather three toys, such as teddy bears, and a selection of food items. • For your food items, you will need a set of three, a set of six and a set of nine. For example, three cakes, six biscuits and nine raisins. You could use real food items, make some pretend food out of playdough, draw pictures or cut them out of magazines. Count the toys and then the first set of three food items. Encourage your child to share the food items between the toys by giving one item to each toy. Ask them to count how many items of food each toy has. Then, repeat with the second set of six items of food and finally the last set of nine items of food. Each time, encourage your child to think about sharing the items between the toys so that each toy has the same number of each type of food. How to Get Your Child Thinking • How can we share the food fairly? • Is it fair if I give all the cakes to this toy? • How many does each toy have? Are they shared fairly? • Does each toy have the same number? • How many biscuits do we have? • Is this a fair way of sharing the biscuits? • What else could we try? • Can you help me share the raisins fairly?
