The Mathematics & Statistics Department at McMaster University is an active and dynamic home to over 30 faculty members, 16 post-doctoral fellows and 80 graduate students from around the world. We have core strengths in Algebra and Number Theory, Analysis and Partial Differential Equations, Financial Mathematics, Geometry and Topology, Industrial Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, Mathematical Logic, Probability and Statistics.
The Department emphasizes a student-centered approach to teaching by offering a curriculum that is rich with opportunities for cooperative education, experiential learning, and undergraduate research. Students who take courses in mathematics and statistics enjoy the following aspects of our curriculum:
Broad-based, interdisciplinary courses
Lectures by world recognized leaders in research and teaching
Program flexibility, which allows opportunity to complete a minor or joint Honours
Availability of courses in actuarial mathematics and applied statistics
An active undergraduate society in Mathematics and Statistics
Opportunities for paid undergraduate summer research with faculty members
Paid and volunteer teaching opportunities through our Math Help Centre and Outreach program
Students in their final year also have the opportunity to conduct independent research under the supervision of a faculty member as part of an Honours thesis.
CO-OP OPPORTUNITIES
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics offers co-op versions of all Honours programs beginning in Level III. These are five-year programs that include two 8-month work terms. Employment rates in these programs are excellent, with students completing work terms in a variety of sectors including:
BioinformaticsExperimental design and data analysisImagingInformation technologyMathematical finance
MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS FACULTY OF SCIENCE
FOCUS OF STUDYStudents in Mathematics & Statistics at McMaster enjoy the benefits of a program that is fully integrated within the Faculty of Science. The department offers programs in:
Honours Actuarial and Financial MathematicsHonours Mathematics & StatisticsHonours Mathematics & Statistics (Mathematics Sub-Plan)Honours Mathematics & Statistics (Statistics Sub-Plan)
These options allow the student flexibility in course selection from both within and outside the Faculty of Science. The opportunity is available for interdisciplinary studies possibly leading to a minor in another subject. In addition, the Department offers combined Honours programs with the following:

EXAMPLES OF FACULTY RESEARCH
Dr. David Earn – Eradicating disease and conserving endangered species are two sides of the same coin. Dr. Earn’s research group applies methods in statistics and differential equations to analyze these fundamental problems.
Dr. McKenzie Wang – According to Einstein’s theory of relativity, gravity exhibits itself mathematically in the bending of space-time. Dr. Wang studies curvature on manifolds to find out whether Einstein’s equations determine the topology of the universe.
Other areas of faculty research include: number theory, logic, math education, numerical analysis, partial differential equations.
FACILITIES
The innovative design of the James Stewart Centre for Mathematics facilitates spontaneous learning opportunities, featuring an integrated teaching, research and outreach centre.
