Math Lab – Credit Recovery Syllabus
Welcome to Math Lab – Credit Recovery at Amphitheater High School. Here are the goals of this course:
1. Recover any credits you are missing from your high school career
2. Get help with any current math classes you are taking so you earn credit for the course
3. Earn an elective credit for the work you do in this course
Recovering Credits via Edgenuity
Our district uses a curriculum called Edgenuity (http://student.edgenuity.com) to make it possible for
you to recover your past credits. Here is some information about our Edgenuity System
Edgenuity Courses
The courses in Edgenuity are separated into quarters. You need to pass two quarters in order to earn a semester credit. Your courses should already be setup by Mr Schneider before you log in.
It should take you around 4 ½ weeks to finish the first quarter It should take you around 9 weeks to finish the semester
Edgenuity Grades
Edgenuity is setup like a traditional class – you have assignments, quizzes, tests, and a final exam. Your overall grade in the class is determined by this formula:
Assignments: 15% Quizzes: 20% Tests: 45% Cumulative Exam: 20%
Pre-Tests When you begin a new topic, you will be given a pretest to see if this is something you already know. You must earn at least a 70% on the pretest in order to skip the lesson.
Calculators Calculators are allowed and encouraged on assignment, quiz, and test. Edgenuity has a built-in calculator that you can use. You can also borrow a graphing calculator from Mr Schneider. You may also use online calculators: Desmos: https://www.desmos.com/calculator Geogebra: https://app.geogebra.org/#algebra
Recovered Credits
Your new semester grade is determined by averaging together your two quarter grades. Here are some examples:
1st Quarter: 83% 2nd Quarter: 61%
Average:
New Grade: 72% (C) Credit Recovered!
1st Quarter: 65% 2nd Quarter: 63%
Average:
New Grade: 64% (D) Credit Recovered!
1st Quarter: 62% 2nd Quarter: 55%

Getting Help & Working With Tutors
There may come a time where you find yourself stuck and you need some help working through your
current lesson. When this happens, you can ask for help from Mr Schneider or the tutors in the room.
Ways We Can Help Ways We Can’t Help We can explain the lesson in a different way or with different examples
We can work on extra example problems to help understand the lesson
We can print out past quizzes or reviews to go over the problems with you
We can show you how to use a calculator to help you solve a problem
We can help find mistakes and understand how to avoid them next time
We can help you find definitions, notes, or other resources online to help you
We can’t write down the notes from the video for you
We can’t solve the assignment problems for you (but we can make up other problems to help you with first)
We can’t help you during quizzes, tests, or exams
Taking Quizzes, Tests, and Exams
Each lesson in Edgenuity has a quiz that you must earn at least a 60% before you can continue to the next section.
You are allowed to attempt each quiz 2 times before you are locked out and will need to talk to Mr Schneider.
You are encouraged to take and use notes on your assignments, quizzes, and tests. There are also a few special
situations where you can ask for help during a quiz. Here are the rules for using notes and asking for help:
Notes Asking for Help Checking Answers Pre-Tests Handwritten Notes &
Approved Handouts Allowed*
If you think you remember seeing this topic before but aren’t sure, you may ask a tutor up to 5 yes or no questions to help verify if you are remembering correctly**
If you have all of your work shown for each problem,
you may have your answers checked exactly once
Quizzes Handwritten Notes & Approved Handouts
Allowed*
No Help Allowed If you have all of your work shown for each problem,
you may have your answers checked exactly once
Unit & Topic Tests
Handwritten Notes & Approved Handouts
Allowed*
No Help Allowed No Answers Checked
Cumulative Exams
Handwritten Notes only No Help Allowed No Answers Checked
*Approved Handouts are: Formula sheets, printouts of diagrams or definitions (especially in Geometry), etc.
You may not use printouts of previous quizzes or reviews during quizzes or tests
**We can answer: “Isn’t a linear function a straight line?”, or “Does a hexagon have 6 sides?”, or “is this how I’m
supposed to setup this problem?”
**We can’t answer: “How do you start?”, or “what’s an exponential function?”, or “I don’t know how to do this”
**Even though it’s a yes or no question, we won’t answer “Is this correct?” or “Did I get this right?”

Classroom Norms & Expectations
In order to help support your goals of recovering your past credits, there will be some
expectations and rules in place to make sure our classroom environment is one where we can
focus, we can make progress, and we feel comfortable asking for & receiving help.
Please Respect the Following Classroom Norms & Expectations
The A-List
IDs on (let Mr Schneider know if you need a temporary one)
Electronics Out of Sight when the bell rings
Earbuds Out & Away: You may use your own earbuds (or borrow headphones from the classroom) to listen to the instructional videos on the computer. At no point should music be heard. If you are getting help from a tutor, earbuds should be out and away.
Materials Ready when Class Begins
Start of Class
Logged Into computers and opening up Edgenuity
Electronics put away
Class notebook out and ready to get started
A Focused Classroom
Looks Like Sounds Like
Edgenuity Open on Computers
Headphones Plugged into Computers
Notebooks open & taking notes
Working until the bell rings
Mostly Silent; maybe a few quiet mathematical conversations with neighbors
Classroom Grades
This class is also used to earn an elective credit which means you will receive a grade in this class
Edgenuity Progress: 60% Weekly Participation: 40%
On Track Progress: Each week, Mr Schneider will check your progress and compare it to where you should be in the class. Students who are within 10% of where they should be will get full credit. Students who are behind will lose points; students who are ahead will gain extra credit. Growth Progress: You are expected to progress through at least 15% of your course each week. Extra growth will count as extra credit. This is a good way to earn points even if you are behind in your course.
Weekly Participation: This grade is based mostly on behavior and work ethic while in class. You will earn points for:
Being ready for class when the bell rings
Setting a goal for each day and accomplishing it
Positive classroom behaviors will earn you points
Negative classroom behaviors will lose you points

Other Questions You May Have
What happens if I fail a quiz or test too
many times?
You can fill out a Quiz Retake Request, which will ask you to do a few things to prove to Mr Schneider that you’re ready for another quiz retake, such as: going over your quizzes with a tutor, or making flashcards, or completing some extra problems that Mr Schneider creates. One you’ve completed this, Mr Schneider will give you an additional quiz retake
What happens if I fall behind in my
Edgenuity progress? Any of the following could happen:
Seat Change
Phone Call Home
Academic Contract & Academic Referral
Bad Grades
What happens if I’m caught cheating on a pretest/quiz/test?
First of all, here’s what cheating looks like:
Using an unapproved handout (like previous quiz printouts)
Getting help from a friend (this is only cheating if it happens during a
quiz or test – it’s okay to get help during assignments and lessons) Using google during the exam (but: okay to use google before the exam) If we see any of these, here’s what will happen:
You will submit your exam, no matter how far you are
If you fail the exam, you’ll have to retake it
Depending on the situation, you may have your seat changed or have to take the exam with paper and pencil
How do I get a test unlocked?
Before you can take a unit test, you need to complete a test review.
If you pass the test review: we’ll unlock the test right away – congratulations!
If you do not pass the rest review: You’ll first have to correct the review using a Review Reflection Sheet. You’ll need to start this with a tutor or Mr Schneider. Once this is done and a tutor signs off, we will unlock the test
When else can I work on Edgenuity?
At Home!
Before School in 418
