Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 4

HomeWork• HW is provided to:

– Make sure you get practice in thoroughly, completely, correctly working out answers to problems

– Provide guidance (by example) of what sorts of questions will be on the exam, etc

– Provide the instructor some feedback on how people are doing

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 5

HomeWork• SHOW ALL WORK

– If you use a formula, write it down

– If you use a formula, define what each variable in the formula means

– Plug the variables in

– Do 1 math operation per line

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 6

HomeWork• Ex: An angle is 3 radians, the circle

is 1 foot long, what’s the arc length?– 1) s = r • θ

– 2) r = 1 foot θ = 3

– 3) s = 1 * 3 s = 3 (feet)

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 7

HomeWork• At the same time: there’s ~30

students, and ~10 problems/HW (or more) 300 problems per HW assignment

– This is too much to grade them all in fine-grained detail

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 8

HomeWork• HW will be graded as follows:

– Quick pass through for overall completion / “stuff looks right”• Anything that isn’t finished / correct may

result in loss of points

– A couple of questions will be picked for more detailed review• Questions picked are at instructor’s discretion• May not be the same for all students

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 9

Exams• Exams, unlike the HW, WILL be

graded in detail– Partial credit will be awarded

– Exam grading will be based on your ability to show your work

– You’ll do some ‘practice mini-exams’ before the exam

Page 10: Math 120: Pre-calculus 2 Instructor: Mike Panitz (mpanitz@cascadia.ctc.edu)

Math 120: Pre-Calculus 2! 10

Exam #1• You’ll be given some problems to work

through, and for each problem, you’ll also get the answer.– Your grade will be dependent on your ability to

fully document & explain how you get to the answer

– Partial credit for ‘correct steps, wrong answer’• You’ll be allowed to bring notes on a 3”x5”

card (front and back).– No other notes/books– Calculator memory will be cleared before you’re

allowed to start
