Course Description: The first course in a three-semester sequence covering basic calculus of real variables, Calculus A introduces the concept of limit and applies it to the definition of derivative and integral of a function of one variable. The rules of differentiation and properties of the integral are emphasized, as well as applications of the derivative and integral. This course will usually include an introduction to the transcendental functions and some use of a computer algebra system. 4 credits. Prerequisite: MAT 140 or appropriate score on the College Level Math exam. Class Videos/Blackboard: Students are expected to check course announcements and watch the assigned class videos each week. Go to: bb.courses.maine.edu and click Login. Your Blackboard username and password are your University of Maine email username and password. Click on your MAT 152 Calculus A class to access the syllabus, your exam grades, course documents, announcements and other course information/materials. Please use your University of Maine email account to communicate with me and remember to check this account regularly. I will respond to student emails MondayFriday during regular business hours (8 a.m.-4 p.m.), usually within 24 hours. Course grades will be determined as follows:

A 90 to 100

B 80 to 89

C 70 to 79

D 60 to 69

F below 60

Plus and minus grades are possible so you could earn a grade of A-, B+, B, or B-, etc.

Important January 22: Classes Begin

Dates: February 4: Last day to drop for 100% refund

February 18: Presidents’ Day

February 20: Exam 1 (Portland Campus)

March 18-22: Spring Break

March 28: Last day to drop with an automatic W

April 10: Exam 2 (Portland Campus)

May 3: Last Day of Classes

May 6: Final Exam (Portland Campus)

Exam Information: Calculators are not permitted for Exams 1 & 2 but a basic scientific (non-graphing)

calculator will be permitted for the final exam. Make-up exams will be allowed only if the instructor is

contacted prior to the scheduled exam. Proctored exams will be given on the Portland campus on February

20, April 10, and May 6. Online students may take exams at USM (notify course instructor by email) OR

at a UMS site (sign up in advance at http://www.learn2.maine.edu/exam to take exams at a UMS site).

Tutoring: The Learning Commons provides USM students free tutoring services in numerous subject

areas including Math, Writing, and Chemistry. Peer tutors are trained to assist students through active

practice, testing understanding, and building confidence. With up to two appointments per week per

subject area, students can take the opportunity to:

practice and better understand course concepts

improve the quality of their writing

learn how to use a variety of software programs

learn how to become more effective and efficient learners

All tutoring sessions are available in person or online, with appointments accessed by visiting

http://usm.maine.edu/learningcommons. Appointments for Portland and Gorham can also be made by calling

780-4228. Lewiston-Auburn appointments can be scheduled by calling 753-6513. Additional math support is

offered on a walk-in basis through the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, located on the 5th Floor of

the Science Building (C-Wing) on the Portland Campus and Bailey Hall on the Gorham Campus.
