Why is construction materials management important???

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    3/56

Bad material management is one of the major factors in the loss of

    money within any construction company.

Materials cost + cost of unloading + cost of storing + cost of

transporting half of the contract value

Make sure that wastage is minimised.

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

Name some of the costs of waste materials???

Name some of the common causes of waste???

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    8/56

    Common causes of

    waste

    Careless unloading and

    handling

    Damage by following

    trades

    Inaccurate ordering

    Undocumented

    variation

    Theft and vandalism

    Inadequate storage

    Poor workmanship,

    negligence

How do you normally specify the quantity and thequality of construction materials???

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    12/56

    Accurate requisitioning

    QuantityQuality

    Is normally stated in

    the contractMeasured on siteScaled drawings

Order delivery of materials over the period of

    the construction process (prolonged period)

    Avoid total bulk order, why???

Ensure sufficient buffer storage is maintained to

offset the effects of suppliers delayed deliveries

    Sand and aggregate

1- avoid contact between different materials

    2- do not overstock

3- avoid direct contact with soil4- provide drainage to prevent build up of moisture content as this affects the

    strength of concrete mix

    5- label them

6- provide cover for frost protection as this changes the size of aggregates for

concrete mix and intended compressive strength of concrete.

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    16/56

    1- select correct size silo

2- if bagged store under cover

3- avoid contact with soil as this decreases compressive strength of concrete

4-do not stack above 5 bags high

    5-use in order of delivery

    Cement

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    17/56

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    18/56

    1- avoid contact with soil

2- ensure adequate number of bearers to prevent overstress

3- ensure lifting points clearly identified

    4-do not stack above 1.2 m high

5- choose a position away from traffic routes r provide barriers

    Precast concrete

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    19/56

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    20/56

    1- clean soil before stacking

2- ensure adequate bearers to prevent distortion3- limit height of stacks-to discourage people from climbing up

4- props and other fixings, provide pallets and/or racks

5- ensure use of nail boxes by each carpenter

6-ensure that telescopic props are cleaned, oiled and complete before stacking

    Formwork

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    21/56

  • 8/7/2019 Materials and Waste Management

    22/56

1- have bent and cut off site

    2- avoid contact with soil

3- ensure adequate bearer to avoid distortion

4- ensure no contact with oil, grease, diesel etc as this reduces the bond

between reinforcement and concrete5-ensure they are labeled correctly.

6- do not permit early delivery of bars.

7- encourage fixers to use reels fixed to their belts to reduce waste of tying

    wire.

8- provide sufficient storage and access space.

    25/56

1- ensure clean, level form base

    2- avoid contact with soil

3- do not stack them up for more than 1.2 m or 2 pallets high4- do not stack more than 1 m wide

5- leave enough space for forklifts etc

6- protect from excessive moisture and frost

7- refuse delivery of loose banded bricks or damaged pallets

8- ensure that blocks are stacked on edge

    Bricks and blocks

    27/56

1- ensure tubes are stored in racks off the ground

2- ensure that scaffold boards are stored off the ground and protected from

excessive moisture and frost3- allow for ventilation

4- ensure fittings stored in their own bins and bins clearly marked

5- ensure that scaffolding is carefully checked on and off site by one numerate

    responsible person

1- ensure timber to correct specification, i.e. twist, shakes, knots free from

    fungal growth and wavy edges

    2- ensure timber clearly allocated

3- avoid contact with the soil

4- protect from the rain, frost etc5- allow for ventilation through stacked timber

6- be stacked in horizontal racks

7- provisions made for collection and storage of offcuts

8- ensure that trussed rafters and roof trusses are not stored flat without

adequate support9- ideally trusses and trusses rafter should be stored upside down in racks with

the weight carried at the purlin position.

1- window and door frames must be stored horizontally or vertically but must

be adequately supported to prevent distortion.

2- remove any plastic type wrapping before storage unless temperature and

    humidity can be controlled.

3- joinery should be stored in a cool dry secure store4- joinery units should not be stacked more than 3 high

5- ensure adequate ventilation and space for access

6- mouldings should be stored in horizontal racks

7- ensure provision made for collection and storage of off cuts

8- mouldings should be primed before storage

    1- avoid contact with soil

2- must be stored in cool, dry condition away from direct heat

3- different grades must be kept separate

4- roofing felts and dpcs should be stood on end

5- rolls in excess of 1.2m and dpms should be stored horizontally

1- do not accept early delivery

2- all plumbing goods and fittings should be stored in a secure compound and/or

locked store3- C.I., P.V.C., Pitch Fibre and asbestos cement materials should be stored on

    horizontal racks
