Implications for learning and teaching
• Establish prior knowledge - what do they hold in their long-term memories?• Missing prior knowledge - intervention• Teaching new material - appropriate challenge• Repetition is important - spacing and interleaving

Ideal model for teaching/learning
• Starter refers to a previous lesson's learning• New content taught by teacher, supplying challenge, differentiated to take into account different levels of prior knowledge/cultural capital• Lesson(s) chunked in order to ensure concentration and focus kept a maximum. Thinking time allowed• Application of new knowledge by students• Test to check understanding• Move on to new content
But what happens if they don't all demonstrate complete knowledge and understanding in the test?

Mastery learning: what is it?• Benjamin Bloom• Students must master the learning objectives set for a block of work before they can move on • Pre-tests and formative/diagnostic tests as well as criterion referenced tests• Below a set target (c80%) - Return to remediation work followed by another different but parallel test• Success (above 80%) - Enrichment Activities

How effective is it?• Particularly effective in terms of helping close the gap• Meta-analysis of 103 studies - effect size of 0.52 • Baltimore Schools + Chicago schools - considered very effective

How do you go about doing it?There are various ways• Using homework/out of school learning and tests (see video)• Flipped Mastery learning• Geography - an approach to learning map skills -• Pre test = simple test using a map with a variety of basic questions testing map skills• Skills acquisition - Variety of map skills - Teacher taught followed by formative assessment exercise with determined threshold pass rate (80%) • For those with over 80% - Enrichment = GCSE style question to describe routes using all map skills. • For those under 80% -Teacher led exercise to make sure all others can master these skills followed by second, parallel test

Critics• Is Mastery Learning as effective for children who are learning more quickly?• Is the process of mastery learning slowing down the movement through the curriculum too much?• Dull and repetitive?

Further questions• How do we ensure that as many students as possible attain the minimum threshold KPIs whilst maintaining challenge for all?• What do we do with those - very few - children who can't even achieve the Foundation KPIs despite interventions and remediation?
