Translation and Interpreting Studies Masters candidates will undertake a discipline specific

program ofone research coursework unit, with an additional 48 hours of training. Details

of the research skills training requirements are outlined in the tables on page 4.

Research skills training activities have been categorised into research skills training units as

skills training units listed above. In the first instance you will be enrolled into the research

skills training units that have been identified as core requirements. Enrolment for the

additional optional research skills training units will occur at an appropriate time during your

    candidature.

During your candidature, you will be required to undertake a range of research skills training

activities that have been grouped under each of the skills unit headings. Some of the

research skills training activities will be core activities while others can be chosen from a

range of options, which will be decided between yourself and your supervisor according to

the identification of the most appropriate options. You will need to identify the optional

research skills training activities with your supervisor, prior to your milestone panels as you

will be required to report on your progress at the milestone panels.

You will need to complete 48 hours of research skills training activities in order to complete

the research skills training requirements of the masters program.

Milestone Panels and Research Skills Training Act ivit ies

At each milestone, you will be required to present your research progress to a formal panel

where you will also be expected to provide evidence that you have completed any research

coursework and research skills training activities required by that milestone. You will also be

expected to provide information on planned activities (both core and optional) that you have

identified and agreed with your supervisor that will be completed prior to the next milestone

presentation. The table on page 4 provides you with information about the expectations of

the Monash HDR program in Translation and Interpreting Studies, as well as any mandatory

time-frame links to milestones. All training elements and coursework must be complete bythe final milestone

You will not be able to submit your thesis if you have not met all of the requirements for

coursework and training. A log for tracking your training has been provided. It is expected

that you will discuss your training and coursework requirements with your supervisor during

your fortnightly meetings. You will need to provide a statement verifying that you have met

all of your training hours and that you have completed all the required research skills training

activities as discussed with your Supervisor. You will also need to ask your supervisor to

sign off that you have met the required training hours and that you have completed all the

research skills training activities. These documents will be submitted to the Milestone Panels

as authentication that the requirements have been met.

Substitutions and Additions to Skills Training Activi ties

Substitution or Additions Table to be used either when a training activity outlined within the

individual research skills training plan has been substituted for another activity or a skills

training activity has been added to the optional activities. Substitutions and additions can

only occur with the approval of the candidates supervisor and the program director and are

only applicable for optional skills training activities. Core skills training activities must be

completed as per the training plan, unless credit is sought. This table will need to be

attached to the relevant paperwork and presented at the appropriate milestone panel

(according to any links to milestones for the original training activity).

*Note substitutions and additions can be made for any optional skills training activity where

the supervisor and student agree that the new activity is either more appropriate than a

currently listed activity or they wish to add it to the list of optional activities for a particular

candidate. Credit refers to the situation when a candidate has already completed a skillstraining activity, either at another institution or prior to entering their graduate research

program and wishes to have this acknowledged as completed within their training plan.

Credit can be applied for using the credit application form, which can be found at:

    http://www.monash.edu.au/connect/assets/docs/forms/credit.pdf

    Example of substitution:

Student A is six months into their PhD and has completed two skills training activities from

the list of skills training options, along with their core skills training activities. Student A in

discussions with their supervisors mentions a training activity they have noticed that is being

offered through an organisation external to Monash. The supervisor and student agree that

  • 7/29/2019 Master Program Translation Interpreting Studies170413a

    Appendix Pageiiofii

this would be an excellent course for the student to attend and agree to substitute this

course for one or more of the skills training activities outlined in their individual skills training

plan, under their optional training activities section. It is important to remember when

substituting activities that the student will need to ensure they are able to complete the

required number of optional training hours as outlined in their training plan. The supervisor

signs the above table to signify their agreement and the student seeks additional agreementfrom the Program Director, who also signs their consent.

    Example of an addition:

Student B is 12 months into their PhD. At a regular meeting with their supervisor, the

supervisors tells the student they have seen a training activity that the faculty of education is

running that they believe would be valuable for the student to attend. The supervisor and the

student are not sure which of the current skills training activities they would choose to

substitute this additional activity for, so they agree to add it to the list of optional training

skills activities, thus allowing the student to choose the most appropriate skills training

activities throughout their candidature, as agreed between the supervisor and student.
