master introphotographyShowcase 2014

Every year the Master Photographers Association holds annual awards which are a competition and an exhibition. Like any salon of photography, hundreds of images may

be accepted to go on show but the judges will pick the best in each class. The winners are guaranteed exposure and find their way into the pages of this magazine. The shortlisted images may also do so. In this Showcase annual special edition of the magazine, you will find the winners but also a large selection of other entries which made into the ‘longlist’ and were displayed at the awards event. The task of a picture editor is never made easy by competitions or awards. Taking the major winners, they can be so different and so strong visually that they compete with each other. Photographers today develop their own unique colour and tone palettes, and have styles often more distinctive then ever in the past. Sometimes groups of photographers in one area – geographical or a field of work – begin to favour one dominant style. Both these situations work against the picture editor. In completing the special showcase edition I have looked at all the eligible entries and considered questions like dominant styles. My decision comes down on the side of variety. Then I have looked at the way images compete with each other or complement each other. Sometimes you’ll see exactly why two photographs have been paired on a spread. Sometimes less obvious curating needs to be done, though always with the intention that when you see two or more images together, the different images should make you look harder at the companions. Finally, there has been the matter of balancing the proportion of wedding and portrait photographs to other genres. Although the MPA is best-known for having in membership the finest social photographers in the UK and abroad, the Awards reflect a much wider range of subject matter and some of the best exhibition prints are inevitably the ones the authors really care about. A decade ago, professional awards often had two categories for different variations on wedding photography for every one class covering any other theme. That has changed as the MPA itself has changed. Many more fashion and beauty photographers are now prominent in the association, and their ideas and skills are passed on to social photographers working for private clients. A 21st century wedding shoot can combine of travel, landscape, architectural, fashion, beauty, and even action sports skills. The ‘destination wedding’ has taken the place once occupied by the ‘venue wedding’. Portraiture, in turn, is far more adventurous. The work shown here is a snapshot of the best from the 2013/2014 Master Photography Awards as selected by the judges and your editor. I believe that a similar special edition in 2015 will prove entirely different from this one. I have published this magazine now for almost 20 years and there have been times when it was hard to see any change in styles or abilities, or the judges’ choices, from year to year. Now we see change and a growing new younger membership across the globe. It’s a good time to be a member of the Master Photographers Association. – David Kilpatrick, Publisher

Deborah Selwood AMPA won the title of International Master Photographer of the Year 2013/14 in the annual awards exhibition of the Master Photographers Association. She was, the following day, elected as

Chairman of the Association. Her awards win was not down to a single image, as the title is now given for the highest aggregate score of five

entries from one photographer.

Her image on the left was also the highest scoring print of the exhibition and has subsequently featured on the cover of Professional Photographer magazine, amongst other media. The image above is our selection from

the remaining four which earned her the title.

A past Master Photographer of the Year, Clare Louise FMPA was absent from the Master Photography Awards 2013/14 – not just as a winner, but as an entrant in any form. Early in 2013, she took on the temporary job of running the Association as the directors implemented major changes to safeguard the future of Britain’s principal body for professional photographers. As acting CEO, it was her job to organise the awards and she chose not to enter any work. Your editor is rounding off this pictorial edition with an example of Clare’s recent work which was used on the Master Photographers Association stand at

What have people been saying about Light Blue over the last year? HS: We launched Light Blue 4 at the beginning of 2013. We were optimistic that people would like what we’d been working on, but we’ve been blown away by the feedback we’ve had since then. People tell us that Light Blue is really easy to use, powerful and comprehensive, and makes run-ning a successful photography business so much simpler. In particular, we’ve had lots of comments from people who’d tried earlier versions of Light Blue that version 4 was a huge step for-ward – much faster, much easier to use, and prettier, too!

Can you tell us about the online services that you introduced with Light Blue 4?HS: Light Blue is desktop software, rather than something you access via a web browser, so you can always get to your information, even when you don’t have an internet connection. However, we know that people like to have their software on more than one computer, which is why we de-veloped a set of online services that combines the best features of desktop software and cloud-based services. You can work offline, then when you go online, your information syncs between com-puters – and we’ve got iPad and iPhone versions, too. We thought it would be popu-lar, and we’ve been proved right – the majority of our customers are using our online services, and since they launched we’ve handled over 150 million syncs, which is phenomenal. Our online services are really good value, because you don’t just get the syncing features – you also get all the updates we release as long as you’re subscribed, completely free.

So if Light Blue 4 was good, how do you make it better?HS: First up, we’ve put a lot of work into speeding up getting information into Light Blue. If you’re subscribed to our online services, you can now hook up forms on your website to your Light Blue account, which makes it really fast to get new enquiries into Light Blue. You can also use that to gather information about your existing bookings – whether it’s contact information or that all-important list of must-have

Trial, pricing and supportTake a free, fully functioning 30-day trial today – download the software from www.lightbluesoftware.com

The software is priced at £295 + VAT; the online services start at £7.50 + VAT per month. The Light Blue team prides itself on providing fantastic technical support; everything’s done by email and it’s free.

Light Blue : making admin simpleThe Light Blue development team has been beavering away at a brand-new version of their award-winning business software for photographers. We catch up with Light Blue Software’s Hamish Symington to find out more…

What’s new in Light Blue 5?Contact groupingGrouping your clients together makes it easier to handle groups of people on shoots (e.g. when you’re doing a family portrait session, or organising a complicated corporate photography job). We’ve also added some great new ways of making it easier to communicate with groups of clients, and market to them.

Contact taggingTagging contacts allows you to categorise leads you’ve received according to the types of shoot they’re likely to be interested in, or keep track of promotions you’ve included customers in. It’s another powerful tool that we’ve added to Light Blue’s marketing features.

The InboxOur new Inbox lets you pull information from other sources into Light Blue, saving you from hav-ing to enter it yourself. You can import emails (from Apple’s Mail app on a Mac, or Microsoft’s Out-look on Windows) as well link the forms on your website up to your Light Blue account, making it quicker to enter new enquiries or get your clients to give you more information about their shoots.

Managing your timeYou can now book time off for yourself and your staff, pencil in alternative dates for your enquir-ies, book in appointments like consultations and viewing sessions more quickly, and see what’s happening today at a glance.

And there’s more…The Light Blue team has added over 300 tweaks and new features, which help make Light Blue even easier to use, more powerful and more comprehensive. For the full list of changes, see www.lightbluesoftware.com

pictures from a client. We’ve built an add-on for Gravity Forms on WordPress which makes it incred-ibly simple to set up, but if you’ve got your own custom built website you’ve got the option to write your own code to connect directly to our API. Our beta testers are telling us that it’s already saving them lots of time and making the process of handling enquiries even more streamlined.

Is there anything to make it easier for larger studios to han-dle their business?HS: Yes; we’ve been working with a number of big portrait studios to improve things here. In Light Blue 5 you can group contacts to-gether into families, which really helps with organising shoots and marketing (particularly for get-ting in touch with parents around the time of their children’s birth-

“A loaded gun of efficiency” – Rob Burress’ story

“TO BE honest, I thought I didn’t need software like Light Blue”, says Rob Burress, photojournalist extraor-dinare from Hampshire. “Ultimately, I figured I had enough IT prowess to be able to sort myself out with a task list and spreadsheets - it was good enough. But then I spent a few days with a fellow photographer and noticed her keeping everything together with a really nifty bit of software, and thought ‘I could use that’. I was amazed when I found out it was Light Blue!” “Compared to the previous ver-sions, it’s revolutionary – a well-thought-out, superbly executed, customisable, responsive piece of software. With Light Blue, I was now staring down the barrel of a loaded gun of efficiency designed to handle a more wholly rounded photo busi-ness. When I saw just how perfect the workflows and templates were, I knew I was on to something unique – something which is flexible enough to suit the type of business I actually run, not the business the software thought I should be running.” Rob’s now firmly on top of his business. “I no longer feel like I have to use email as a filing system! No more tedious calendar entries to remind myself to do something or contact someone (which, to be hon-est, most of the time I wouldn’t even bother with – and sometimes things got lost in the cracks). The automated workflows, tasks to remind me to follow up enquiries, and the contact

Light Blue : making admin simple

history in each shoot all combine to provide me with a solid framework to not only keep up with enquiries and shoots but also deliver on them more effectively.” So, how would Rob sum all this up in a sentence? “I know that Light Blue has my back when I’m busy. If you’ve tried an old version and not looked at this one, I command you to take an open mind and give it a second look – it’s a game changer!” [Yes, we know that’s two sentences, but he just had to say both!]

days), track which salespeople have closed new orders, and book time off for your staff, and we’ve made it easier for photographers to pencil in alternative dates for a session. We’ve also introduced some great features that will help anyone who runs a franchised business, or anyone who runs more than one studio. That’s just a selection – we’ve got over 300 tweaks and improvements in Light Blue 5 which make it faster and easier to use.

Such as…?HS: We’ve been able to import emails from Mail on a Mac since we launched Light Blue 4, but we’ve now extended that to Out-look on Windows, too. It really helps to have a full communica-tion history with your customers, and our new Inbox will make that much easier. You can now save

your own customised reports so you can get to the information that matters to you more quickly, and you can now tag contacts which means you can easily track their interests or which promo-tions they’ve been included. Have a look in the panel opposite for more on what we’ve added!

What does the future hold for Light Blue? HS: We’ve always been a respon-sive, dynamic company, and we don’t stand still with our development work. We’ve been talking to other suppliers about ways of making the new Inbox in Light Blue even more useful and cutting down on the amount of data entry that photographers need to do; that’s all I can say for the moment, but watch this space and we’ll be making some excit-ing announcements soon. And,

of course, we’ll be continuing to innovate, both with our own ideas and with feedback from our customers all around the world.

What single piece of advice would you give to anyone run-ning a photography business?HS: Get organised and stay or-ganised! If you’re always on top of your new enquiries, tasks, outstanding invoices, and so on, you’ll always know exactly what’s going on with your admin and finances. That means that you’ll be able to give your clients an amazing service, responding to enquiries promptly and profes-sionally, following them up when they need it, and know exactly how much money you’re bringing in. As one of our customers said to us recently, “After a camera, Light Blue is the most important thing for my business”!
