Seasonal High tunnel (Hoop House): NRCS helps producers plan and implement high
tunnels; steel-framed, polyethylene covered structures that extend growing seasons in
an environmentally safe manner. High tunnel benefits include better plant and soil
quality, fewer nutrients and pesticides in the environment, and better air quality due to
fewer vehicles being needed to transport crops. Supporting conservation practices
such as grassed waterways, and diversions are available to address resource concerns
on operations with Seasonal High Tunnel structures.
NRCS Announces EQUIP Signup for 2017 funding – Apply by March 3, 2017

This is my first message as your new president. I look forward to getting to know the master gardener volunteers better and to learning about your projects. A sincere thank you to Lila Waldman for her leadership as president for the last two years. Everyone in the organization appreciated your organizational skills, business knowledge and generosity. Thank you also to Barb Rothwell for the job of treasurer for the last year. I look forward to working with our new plate of officers for the coming year. It has been a hard winter. The snow we are used to but the ice has been a challenge. But, the days are getting longer and it is time to start thinking of spring and our gardens. There is another “Let’s Get Green and Growing” all day seminar coming up on April 1 that will brighten our minds with thoughts of spring. This is a great opportunity to collect volunteer hours, connect with fellow gardeners and add to your knowledge of horticulture. The executive board will be meeting to discuss how our organization is doing. We will look at what we want to achieve as an organization and how we are doing achieving those goals. To help with this project we would like your input. We will be sending out a survey via “Survey Monkey”. Our next meeting will be in Arlington. Let’s do some car-pooling. One group will meet at the Extension Office parking lot at 6:00 PM. If there is another site to meet let me or the Extension Office know. Carol Ziehmke

Articles in weekly Papers (Mary Jo and Jean): Mary Jo received a response from Columbus paper, 500-700 words ideal, include author’s name, photo as well as other photos as applicable. We will commit to 12 articles per year (monthly) verses 26 and submit them to both Columbus and Portage papers simultaneously.
Portage Food Security Meeting Report: Sue provided a detailed report of the meeting. The group is working on increasing its food share program for underfed children in the Portage area. They would like to expand their 2 locations to 3 [possibly] and include a ‘backpack’ weekend food option for those who miss meals when the current program stops on Friday. We are trying to determine how Master Gardeners can help with this group. Perhaps we can grow food in the local plots for them or better yet help some of them grow vegetables in one of the community plots themselves. The CCMG role is yet to be determined.
New MGV Class (George): Currently we have 4 signed and paid. We need a minimum of 8 to hold the class. Phone calls being made to solicit other interested candidates. It may have to be cancelled.
