Sumo DM as a Super Power hearing instrument is unique

in its use of precise digital phase cancellation to eliminate

sudden whistling caused by dynamic acoustical situations.

Phase cancellation is the only way to eliminate feedback

without reducing gain or distorting the signal.

As well as removing feedback in everyday listening situa-

tions, Sumo DM guarantees full use of the volume control

without the risk of invoking feedback, through setting the

feedback limits in each of the instrument’s eight channels.

Sumo DM’s Dynamic Feedback Cancellation paves the way

for successful Super Power fi ttings. It removes one of the

most common sources of frustration ensuring consistent

access to speech and superb sound quality.

tains consistent sound quality regardless of the nature of the feedback. This ensures that the user does not need to worry about feedback in any situation. Furthermore, you will experience fewer problems caused by leaking earmoulds.

Smart Volume Control eliminates feedback

The Feedback Manager is a crucial tool for initializing the DFC and Volume Control systems, allowing you to take individual earmould character-istics into account. The Feedback Manager operates across all eight channels to determine the exact gain settings allowed within each channel. This primes the DFC for optimal operation and allows your client full use of the Volume Control - maximizing gain across all frequencies within the set limits for optimal audibility without invoking feedback.

The challenge of eliminating feedback

One of the disappointments experienced by Super Power users is the daily intrusion caused by feedback. This causes a number of persistent problems. First, it can distort the sound signal across all the frequencies, causing a noticeable reduction in sound quality. Second, it can be so annoying to the user’s environment that the user is forced to turn the instrument down, thus loosing crucial speech information when it is most needed. And fi nally, it can restrict full use of the volume control, which in turn limits the person’s ability to hear and under-stand speech.

Previously, Super Power instruments have offered only limited management of feedback. A typical approach would be to reduce the gain - either by limiting the volume or through notch fi ltering. Unfortunately, both these feedback-reduction strate-

gies result in reduced audibility and speech understanding. Using new digital technology Sumo DM brings a number of new solutions to the problem of feedback. Now, these solutions include a Dynamic Feedback Cancellation system that eliminates feedback without reducing gain.

Phase cancellation, not gain reduction!

Sumo DM’s Dynamic Feedback Cancellation (DFC) system is designed to weather sudden changes in the acoustical environment. Using digital signal process-ing, it constantly monitors and analyzes the input and output signals. If changes in input are caused by acoustical feedback, Sumo uses digital phase cancel-lation to effectively remove the annoying whistling with no decrease in the prescribed performance. Adjustments are completed within milliseconds, without disturbing the user. The DFC system main-

Now your clients can benefi t from an intelligent noise

management system specifi cally designed for Super Power

users. Sumo DM’s unique ability to differentiate between

three distinct listening situations promises signifi cant Noise

Reduction benefi ts to people with severe-to-profound

hearing loss.

Sumo DM’s TriState Noise Management combines the

advanced VoiceFinder technology with a new, 8-channel,

modulation-based noise reduction system to preserve the

speech cues and to provide an excellent balance between

audibility and listening comfort, in both noisy and quiet

environments.

Constantly monitoring the client’s environment for speech

and noise, Sumo DM responds quickly and seamlessly to

all sound changes. Not only will your clients benefi t from

better sound clarity and audibility, they will also experience

the freedom of not having to constantly adjust the volume

control.

The challenge of preserving audibility in noise

Loud and complex listening situations can be particularly challenging for Super Power users - especially because they often are unable to accept the side effects of high compression ratios. These combined factors can force Super Power instruments to saturation point, where sound loses its natural dynamics, becoming distorted and uncomfortable. These conditions prevent clients from hearing the temporal cues of speech, which limits their ability to hear and understand conversation.

Conventional solutions to this problem apply modu-lation based noise management to automatically reduce the gain in diffi cult listening situations. Systems based solely on modulation detection have diffi culties differentiating between speech and noise in adverse listening situations. In such products, the same noise reduction is applied whether speech is present or not, and this singular treatment of all envi-ronments results in reduced speech intelligibility.Maintaining speech audibility and intelligibility in noise has always been hard for Super Power users, but this problem is no longer insurmountable. The solution is a noise reduction system capable of detecting and applying varying degrees of noise

management based on the presence or absence of speech - which in Sumo DM takes the form of a highly advanced system called TriState Noise Management.

What is TriState Noise Management?

For the fi rst time ever in a Super Power instrument, two noise management technologies are combined in a single system called TriState Noise Manage-ment. The fi rst is VoiceFinder - the world’s best speech detection system – which is integrated with a modulation-based noise reduction system to provide three unique operational modes. The system moves smoothly between the three states to maintain audi-bility and intelligibility – even in diffi cult listening situations. The Tri-State Noise Management system operates in the following distinct states.

1. Speech in quiet – where the system remains inactive

2. Speech in Noise – where moderate speech-shaped attenuation is applied

3. Noise only – where stronger noise reduction is applied Preserving speech cues in noise

Super Power users are very dependent on speech cues when trying to understand speech in noisy situations. But in loud environments, high-gain,

high-output instruments typically reach satu-ration, preventing the user from accessing the important temporal cues of the speech signal.

By optimizing noise reduction in the affected channels the TriState Noise Management system preserves the speech cues, thereby preserving speech audibility. It actually repositions loud noises correctly within the user’s dynamic range to ensure optimum acceptance of amplifi cation.

In addition, the speed and magnitude of change within the TriState Noise Management system have been specifi cally optimized for Super Power users in order to maintain comfort at high input levels and improve access to speech in noise.

This intelligent system responds much faster than is possible with manual gain adjustments – ensuring maximum audibility without sound fatigue. It also removes the burden of having to constantly adjust the volume control or turn the instrument off in noisy situations.

1. Speech in quiet state: Only speech is detected and the Noise Management system remains inactive as no noise reduction is required.

3. Noise only state: Only noise is detected. Stronger gain reduction is applied in each channel for optimal listening comfort in situations with high levels of background noise.

2. Speech in noise state: Both speech and noise are detected. The degree of attenuation is based on modulation and the input level. Furthermore, the attenuation is speech-weighted to preserve speech cues while reducing background noise in diffi cult listening situations.

Amplifi cation of input signal (in red) without TriState Noise Management results in saturation and poor modulation. Amplifi cation with TriState Noise Management preserves signal modulation and hence the vital temporal cues.

The key to successful fi ttings with Super Power instru-

ments is the ability to maximize your client’s residual

hearing.

High Resolution Fitting utilizes eight individual compres-

sion channels for precise frequency shaping. It also offers

separate gain adjustments for three different input levels

– soft, speech and loud as well as MPO – in each channel.

Importantly, the use of the unique speech trimmer allows

the gain for speech in each channel to be optimized

independently of either soft or loud sounds.

With High Resolution Fitting you can accurately match

your client’s targets, and provide more audibility and

speech intelligibility in all listening situations.

Case 1. Narrow dynamic range

The challenge: Fitting speech within the restricted dynamic range without hitting uncomfortable loudness levels.

The Sumo DM Solution:

To make the most out of the client’s restricted dynamic range, multiple knee-points are independently accessible for soft, speech and loud inputs as well as MPO within each of the eight channels. This ensures that speech remains audible but com-fortable within the client’s limited dynamic range.

The challenge of maximizing the residual hearing

Clients with severe-to-profound hearing loss present a unique challenge due to the need to place as much audibility and speech information within their limited residual hearing. To meet this challenge Super Power instruments must address three crucial issues:

1. To maximize the user’s residual hearing the instrument must be able to shape the frequency response and MPO to match the individual hearing loss.

2. To enhance speech understanding and audibility without risking over-amplifi cation, the instru-ment must be able to map the three crucial levels of sound (soft, speech and loud) precisely into the user’s restricted dynamic range.

3. To meet people’s individual amplifi cation re-quirements and preferences the instrument must be able to provide the required compression ratio and dynamics.

Sumo DM achieves these goals through innovative advances in fi tting fl exibility and with the aid of both linear and non-linear amplifi cation strategies.

Unmatched fi tting fl exibility

Where fi tting fl exibility is concerned, Sumo DM promises a number of new opportunities.• Eight compression channels processed through

a sophisticated digital fi lter system allow you to shape the frequency response to match the client’s residual hearing.

• Three levels of gain trimmers (soft, speech and loud) adjusting multiple knee-points in each channel enable you to map sound exactly to the client’s dynamic range.

• With the unique speech trimmer you can adjust the speech amplifi cation independently of both soft and loud sounds to ensure maximum audibility of speech.

• Independent adjustment of MPO for each of the eight channels allows you to safely maximize the upper limits of the client’s dynamic range.

Case 2. Reduced performance with high frequency amplifi cation

The challenge: The client suffers from reduced speech understanding with amplifi cation in the high frequencies.

The Sumo DM Solution:

Being able to independently adjust the gain in a specifi c channel without seriously affecting the adjacent channels enables suitable amplifi cation at frequencies where benefi t is achieved. This is particularly advantageous when high frequency amplifi cation may not be benefi cial.

Case 3. Left corner audiograms

The challenge: No measured auditory thresholds above 2000 Hz.

The Sumo DM Solution:

Performance with conventional digital hearing instruments isconstrained by the limited number of low-frequency channels. Sumo DM offers more channels below 2000 Hz allowing a better match to the client’s residual hearing. Appropriate amplifi cation is provided in channels 1, 2 and 3, allowing precise frequency response shaping to match the client’s hearing.

8 channels allow unmatched fl exibility to shape the frequency response. 3 LF channels offer better possibilities to address left corner audiograms.

People with severe-to-profound hearing loss require a ho-

listic solution if they are to readily embrace a digital Super

Power instrument – and this is precisely what Sumo DM

offers. It accommodates differences in auditory resolution

capabilities and individual hearing instrument experience,

be it linear or non-linear.

With these clients it is important to reach beyond the

audiogram. Sumo DM’s new Identity-based fi tting strategy

is specifi cally designed to accomplish this. Each of the four

Sumo Identities offers a unique sound processing strategy

to match each client’s needs and preferences - enabling

you to easily select the optimal starting point for a fi tting.

The Sumo DM Identities improve immediate hearing

instrument acceptance and help your clients to derive full

benefi t from their residual hearing.

The challenge of matching your client’s amplifi cation needs and preferences

Fitting conventional Super Power instruments can be diffi cult because the rationales they prescribe are based only on hearing loss. For a fi tting to be suc-cessful, additional considerations should be taken into account - such as age, previous experience with non-linear or linear instruments, and auditory resolution capabilities. These factors have a signifi -cant impact on a person’s ability to process sound signals, e.g., clients with good auditory resolution capabilities can benefi t from more complex sound signals.

The four unique Sumo Identities provide an easy way to incorporate these parameters into the fi tting

process. Using this information, Sumo DM automati-cally combines the optimum amplifi cation strategy with specifi c compression characteristics and noise management settings to provide the best starting point for your clients.

Sumo Identities: Different strategies for immediate satisfaction

The Sumo Identities are an evolution of our Super Power fi tting strategy, designed to provide a closer initial match to the hearing profi le. The Sumo Identity prescribes the DSEsp (Dynamic Speech Enhancement for Super Power) loudness model through adjusting the amount of gain, the compres-sion characteristic and the dynamics across the eight

independent channels to fi t the needs and prefer-ences of the user. Importantly, the Identities are a new fi ne-tuning tool for easy comparison of different strategies. The Identities ensure that the TriState Noise Management system functions in synergy with the DSEsp loudness model to match the user’s preferences.

DSEsp

DSEsp is Oticon’s new gain and compression strategy based on speech spectrum and loudness modelling. Being that input levels differ across the different speech frequencies, it is designed to always place speech peaks at appropriate loudness levels.

Linear and non-linear amplifi cation strategies

Sumo DM has a wide range of fi tting strategies. In addition to the four Sumo Identities, you can choose between a range of linear rationales: DSL Lin, NAL-RP and POGOII+BC.

For clients with high auditory abilities that can benefi t from the most complex signal

For clients with some auditory abilities / linear experience that can benefi t from a slightly complex signal

For clients with poor auditory abilities / long linear experience that can benefi t from a simple / linear signal

For clients with good auditory abilities that can benefi t from a moderately complex signal

The challenge of going beyond conventional Super Power design

People with severe-to-profound hearing losses are highly dependent on their hearing instruments in day-to-day life and they are often disappointed with their conventional Super Power solutions. They may have to accept wearing large and bulky instruments in order to gain the output they need. They may also have to contend with instrument breakdowns and malfunctions. Many conventional Super Power in-struments have a reputation for inconsistent power output and poor battery performance (especially in noisy environments) resulting in poor audibility for the user.

Sumo DM solves these shortcomings through dedicated engineering and a thorough design.
