Mass in Honor of Saint MichaelNotes

The Mass in Honor of Saint Michael was inspired by the four-bell peal in the belfry of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Leawood, Kansas. These bells take their pitches from traditional Gregorian incipits for the Gloria and the Te Deum:

Happily, the mode of the Te Deum also corresponds to the traditional presidential chant melodies found in the Roman Missal, allowing for a seamless integration with the ritual chants of the Missal. (Chant lovers will also recognize quota-tions of Sanctus XI [“Orbis factor”].)

The musical material for the Mass is further derived from the quarter-hour chime composed for these bells, a grand 16-note palindrome symbolizing the Christ who is Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the source and goal of all Time:

The resulting cruciform patterns permeate the melody and counterpoint of the Mass, and are finally laid bare—as if in a final self-emptying act—in the Agnus Dei, the litany during the Breaking of Bread—and the ultimate kenosis of the Body of Christ.

PerformancePerformance directions for singers are limited to suggested breath marks. Strong text syllables are generally highlighted by metric placement and duration. Such metric and agogic accents are perhaps best-rendered in singing with a messa di voce, a “lift” or “bloom” in the voice. This will be heard as a subtle crescendo-decrescendo on each note, its speed and amplitude corresponding to the length of the note. The slurs in the organ accompaniment suggest moments where a smooth legato touch may be appropriate. Otherwise, a slightly detached touch will allow for subtle articulation of text and rhythm, as the acoustical situation dictates.

Metronome markings are approximate, intended primarily as an aid to interpreting the now-unconventional meter signatures. The white-note notation was chosen, however, as a visual reminder to those singing and praying to aim for a feeling of breadth, expansiveness and gravity, avoiding the rushing and trivialization of time.
