Pastor’s Column

Third Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Family,

I was recently asked to comment on the appropriateness of a political website that claims to be Catholic. My first reaction to that question is to recoil from any attempt to focus on partisan politics. Upon further reflection, however, I have to ask myself what it might mean for John the Baptist to call Jesus the “lamb of God.” Images of the sweet holy card with Jesus and a little lamb on his shoulder come to mind; but to the first century Jew, the lamb was a “sacrificial victim” and an important source of economic welfare. Between now and the beginning of Lent, our gospels introduce us to the magnetic person and powerful preacher who is Jesus of Nazareth. His commentary on the “Torah” (the first part of Matthew’s gospel) forces the Jewish audience to look at the “Law” in a different way. Our Catholic values require that we reflect a profound respect for human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. God chose to redeem us by becoming one with us in all things but sin. Our reflection of this respect, however, ought to challenge us to make our homes and communities of faith more welcoming places of refuge for sinners and saints alike. Among the most difficult demands of the gospels is the command to “love your enemies.” As we know, love is a decision; and our enemies are both intimate and foreign. In retrospect, I suspect that the admonition of John the Baptist to “behold the lamb of God” is political in the purest sense.

The Sunday of the Word GodOn September 30, 2019, on the liturgical memorial of St. Jerome, Pope Francis announced that the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time would be celebrated as the Sunday of the Word of God. In its inaugural year, this Sunday will fall on January 26, 2020. The inspiring full text of his Apostolic Letter, “Aperuit illis: Instituting the Sunday of the Word of God” may be found online.www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/motu_proprio/documents/papa-francesco-motu-proprio-20190930_aperuit-illis.html

In the Introduction to the Lectionary for Mass, we are reminded of the role of the Word of God in the life of the Church:

In the hearing of God’s word the Church is built up and grows, and in the signs of the liturgical celebration God’s wonderful, past works in the history of salvation are presented anew as mysterious realities. God in turn makes use of the congregation of the faithful that celebrates the Liturgy in order that his word may speed on and be glorified and that his name be exalted among the nations.

Whenever, therefore, the Church, gathered by the Holy Spirit for liturgical celebration, announces and proclaims the word of God, she is aware of being a new people in whom the covenant made in the past is perfected and fulfilled. Baptism and confirmation in the Spirit have made all Christ’s faithful into messengers of God’s word because of the grace of hearing they have received. They must therefore be the bearers of the same word in the Church and in the world, at least by the witness of their lives . . . (Preamble 7)

We are very grateful to all in our parish who proclaim God’s word among us – priests, deacons, lectors, cantors, catechists, and teachers. May all of us be made more aware of the power of God’s word in our liturgies and in our lives.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16)
