Dear Parishioners, As we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany today, we hear the familiar story of the Magi. The Magi – who help to make known God’s pres-ence in the world in a particular way. They are the first visible and tan-gible recipients of the mystery of which Saint Paul speaks. A mystery now revealed … by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, mem-bers of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. We are often so enamored by this familiar story of expectation, wonder, joy and faithful homage that we may forget something essen-tial to the importance of the story: the Magi were not Jewish. They were Gentiles! They were not children of Abraham, people of the Cov-enant, or Israelites. They were “foreigners,” most likely Persian, whose religious affiliation and actual occupation have not yet been settled by biblical scholarship. Yet, they knew about Jesus. They knew about the coming of the Messiah. And they had the fearlessness to approach the Roman-appointed King of Judea – that is, Herod, then the current “king of the

Jews,” and ask him: Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. Asking such a question – essentially implying Herod’s successor and per-haps even deposer – could have been inferred as a threat, if not outright trea-son. But that did not deter the Magi in their quest. Their journey in faith,

and their strength in following God’s prompts and witnessing to his faithfulness, is a model for our own discipleship. With one exception: God is already made manifest to us – we do not have to seek him out; He seeks us out. And when we respond to his call, there are things we can count on – as if they were a star in the sky – to help us make our way to him: his word; his sacraments; his grace; and the gifts he has given us that we might in turn offer back to him. We are not alone in this endeavor. As the Magi were a community of support for each other, so we too, gathered here, are a community of support and belief. We have come here because we have heard about the coming of the Mes-siah and we wish to offer our gifts to him. Gifts that will be returned to us in the gift of Christ’s body and blood, making his presence just as substantially real to us as he was to the Magi. What a powerful, mysterious gift that transcends time! May this and every encounter with Christ empower us and direct us to go forth and witness to the faithfulness of God’s promises, and his en-during presence within and among us.

Notas del Párroco Queridos feligreses, Hoy al celebrar la fiesta de la Epifanía, escuchamos la fami-liar historia de los Reyes Magos. Los Magos – que ayudan a dar a conocer la presencia de Dios en el mundo de una ma-nera particular. Son los primeros receptores visibles y tangi-bles del misterio del que habla San Pablo. Un misterio ahora revelado... por el espíritu, es decir, que por el Evangelio: también los paganos son coherederos de la misma he-rencia, miembros del mismo cuerpo y partícipes de la misma promesa en Jesucristo. A menudo estamos tan enamorados de esta conocida historia de esperanza, asombro, alegría y ferviente tributo que podemos olvidar algo esencial para la importancia de la historia: los Magos no eran judíos. ¡Eran gentiles! No eran hijos de Abraham, de la gente de la Alianza o de los israelitas. Eran "extranjeros", probablemente persas, cuya afiliación religiosa y ocupación real aún no han sido estable-cida por los estudiosos de la Biblia. Sin embargo, sabían acerca de Jesús. Ellos sabían acerca de la venida del Mesías. Y tuvieron la valentía de acercarse al rey de Judea nombrado por los romanos – esto es, Herodes el

Su camino en la fe, y su fortaleza para seguir las indica-ciones de Dios y testimoniar su fidelidad, es un modelo para nuestro propio discipulado. Con una excepción: Dios ya se nos ha manifestado – nosotros no tenemos que buscarle; Él nos busca. Y cuando respondemos a su llama-do, hay cosas con las que podemos contar – como si fueran una estrella en el cielo – para ayudarnos a ir hacia él: su pa-labra; sus sacramentos; su gracia; y los dones que nos ha dado para que podamos devolvérselos a él. No estamos so-los en esta tarea. Tal como los Reyes Magos eran una comunidad de apo-yo del uno para el otro, así nosotros también, reunidos aquí, somos una comunidad de apoyo y de fe. Hemos venido aquí porque hemos escuchado acerca de la venida del Mesías y deseamos ofrecerle nuestros dones. Dones que nos serán devueltos en el regalo del cuerpo y de la san-gre de Cristo, haciendo que su presencia sea tan sustan-cialmente real para nosotros como lo fue para los Magos. ¡Qué regalo tan poderoso y misterioso que trasciende el tiempo!

The Epiphany of the Lord A Gift for the Wise Men

A rather liberal priest was teasing one of the women of the parish, asking, “How do we know the Wise Men weren’t Wise Women?” She answered, “If they were, they’d have brought bottles, diapers, and a bassinet, instead of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” The gifts, of course, are symbols of who Jesus is: a king who is both God and human. And I wonder what our gifts to the Lord say about our faith in him. Remember the song about the little drummer boy, who had no gift to bring but his ability to play the drum? It can remind us that a per-son who gives all they have, no matter how little it seems, is the most generous. So what do we bring to the newborn King? I can give my time by coming to church for the feast of Epiphany and actually paying attention. Just making the effort to listen to the words of scripture, to hear what God may be trying to tell me, could be a great gift. Or I could bring someone in our family, or a friend, who doesn’t go to church very much. Now let’s not forget the meaning of “epiphany.” In ancient times it meant the appearance or manifestation of a divine being. Maybe a way to celebrate the Epiphany is to reflect on how God has been made known to me. Simple things, like a hug from a friend or an answered prayer, or major events like a wedding, the birth of a child, or a funeral, can all be ways to experience the Lord. JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION Tradition, poetry, and literature have long reflected

upon the story of the magi. The journey of the magi indeed resonates with journeys in our own lives. The journey is a search for a “king,” for what or who is of primary importance in life. The seekers lose direction and encounter obstacles and dangers. Searching for a king, the magi first come upon a false king, Herod. The reappearance of the star shows them the true path and leads to the true king.

For Matthew, the journey culminates in the magi’s worship of Jesus. They discover a king not clothed in gran-deur, but wrapped in humility and simplicity. They begin to re-imagine what true royal power really is. Transformed by the journey, they embrace the humble king, Jesus.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Monday of this week is Christmas Day in Russia and in much of the Orthodox world. This curious difference in schedule has a lot to do with how calendars have been developed and changed over the years. In the year 45 B.C. Julius Ceasar gave the empire his Julian Calendar, with the winter solstice on January 6. This put an end to a system in which officials called “pontiffs” were able to tweak the calendar by adding extra days in as needed. He invented two new months at that time, December and January; and in order to correct the mess the pontiffs had made, forced a year of 445 days on the empire in what he named “The Last Year of Confusion.” The new months varied in number of days according to a complex schedule, but the calendar was still off by nearly twelve minutes a year, and lost a full day every 130 years. Pope Gregory XIII reformed the calendar in 1583, but not everyone appreciated his efforts. England held out for two hundred years. The year 1700 was a leap year in England, but not in France; they were eleven days apart! George Washington was really born on February 11; when the Gregorian calendar was finally adopted in the English colonies shortly before the Revolution, he had to move his birthday to February 22. Now the calendars are thirteen days apart, which accounts for Russia’s Julian calendar Christmas. And Caesar thought he had brought confusion to an end! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Es tiempo de añadir los reyes magos al pesebre. En 1448 llegaron los pesebres italianos a las iglesias espa-ñolas, pero no fue hasta que el Rey Carlos III le regaló un pesebre a su hijo en el siglo XVIII que el uso de pese-bres se expandió en los hogares. Desde entonces, el uso de nacimientos llega al continente americano en donde se convierte en la decoración principal para las fiestas navideñas. Así como en todo país latinoamericano el montaje del Belén es una tradición, lo es también en Venezuela. Con el pesebre venezolano llegan también aguinaldos, pa-rrandas, Misas y patines. ¡Sí! ¡Patines! Desde la mitad del siglo pasado los venezolanos cele-bran la época navideña con “patinadas”. Estas “patinadas” normalmente se hacen por las mañanas y muchas calles están cerradas a los autos hasta las 8 a.m. para que niños y jóvenes puedan disfrutar de los patines, bicicletas y otros juguetes que les regala el niño Dios. Reflexão por: João Pereira Arruda A Igreja dedica o primeiro Domingo do Novo Ano com a Solenidade da Epifania do Senhor. Coincidentalmente este ano é esta Solenidade celebrada no dia 6 de Janeiro data essa que era tradicionalmente conhecida como o Dia dos Reis Magos. Epifania quer dizer manifestação é por assim dizer que é por vontade do Senhor se manifestar a todos os povos da terra. O que era então serem os judeus a terem o monopólio de um Deus só para eles o Senhor Jesus Cristo veio afirmar que Deus é para judeus e gentios, de todas as raças e culturas. A diversidade dos Magos assim o afirma, pois estes, vieram adorar o Messias reconhecendo-O como o Filho de Deus. Se aprendemos no catecismo que Deus é o Senhor Deus, Criador de todas as coisas do Universo não podia ser um “exclusivo “ dos judeus mas sim de todos os povos incluindo aqueles que O desconhecendo adoram outros deuses. A “Estrela” serviu de guia aos Magos e estes entenderam que a luz que desta irradiava só podia ser algo demasiado especial para que ficassem parados a continuar as suas vidas quotodianas. Por assim ser a Luz da estrela os impeliu a seguir-la e assim estes acreditaram que essa luz os levaria a Deus. Nos nossos dias vemos inúmeras estras que na maioria dos casos nos confundem e nos levam aos deuses: do dinheiro, do poder, da ganância, das aparências exteriores que nos esvaziam por dentro. Tal como os Magos se deixaram guiar por uma Estrela singular iluminosa; também nós nos nossos dias precisamos deixarmo-nos guiar pela estrela de Jesus Cristo. O Emanuel continua nos nossos dias entre nós presente na Santa Eucaristia e no Sacrário e sempre disponível para Se encontrar connosco. Que não nos precamos por veredas que nos levam á perdicão, quando a estrela que é Jesus nos aponta o caminho certo a precorrer para se viver em amor, unidade, paz, felecidade e em fraternidade.

Notícias Jantar de Cabrito: O CPP leva a efeito um jantar de cabrito no Sábado dia 23 de Fevereiro próximo. Serve este jantar como uma promoção de angariamento de fundos para a nossa paróquia e para as actividades do CPP com a comunidade portuguesa nesta paróquia. O jantar é constituido na sua maioria por cabrito guizado pelo sro. José Gaspar Rocha mas como alternativa haverá bacalhau.
