BEQUESTS

Please consider leaving a legacy by making a bequest in your Will to one of the parishes of the South Boston-Seaport Catholic Collaborative. What a profound way to express your faith by giving back to the parish that has meant so much to you. It's a wonderful means to ensure that your parish remains strong and vital for years to come. Through a bequest, a donor may leave a speci ic dollar amount or reserve a percentage of the estate after provisions for family members and other bene iciar-ies .have been made. Pray if this is the right option for you or your loved ones.

Gratitude on a Solemn Memorial By Fr. Peter DeFazio Tonight I am watching the reflection of police sirens on the side of the church. On several occa-sions this summer the police officers from area C-6 have made the neighborhood safer by remov-ing illegal guns and knives from the street. I am probably not the only one who is extremely grateful for the professionalism and the responsiveness of the men and women in blue who protect and serve the people of South Boston. This year, September 11th is over-shadowed. Everything seems to be taking a back-seat to the pandemic. But ordinarily we would be memorializing the terrible events of September 11, 2001, by showing our love and appreciation for first responders—police officers, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, and doctors, and soldiers; the men and women who work tirelessly and bravely to help others, even at great risk to their own safety. Just this past week, our local heroes from the police department intervened in removing illegal guns off of the street just a block away from St. Peter’s church. I have a recent photograph in mind, of several firefighters who had worked a long 24-hour shift try-ing to contain raging wildfires in California, laying upon the ground in exhaustion. And I recall count-less images of the police officers and firefighters carrying people out of the rubble of New York City skyrises—some, their own fallen comrades. How oddly serene the same plaza is in New York City now, when one visits it, and looks at the beautiful memorial to fallen heroes. We have our own Fallen Heroes Memorial in South Boston’s Seaport. In recent years, I have been privileged to participate in a gathering for Mass and prayer, including a pro-cession from Our Lady of Good Voy-age chapel to the memorial, honoring the men and women who have given everything in the service of their fellow citizens. Because of concerns regarding the Coronavirus, no such memorial service was scheduled this year. The usual packed chapel and long procession with a wreath laying won’t take place. But we still won’t forget. To bow our heads, to say a prayer for the repose of the many souls who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, to thank God for the blessings of freedom that we all enjoy, and to thank our first respond-ers, our police officers, firefighters, those serving in the all-volunteer military and those fighting on the front-lines in the medical field. Because of the pandemic, the rededication ceremony and associated Mass at Our Lady of Good Voyage has been postponed to May, 2021. St. Vincent’s de Paul Church: Update Part II (reprinted from last issue) By Fr. Peter DeFazio & the Pastoral Staff: The South Boston-Seaport Catholic Collaborative is marketing St. Vin-cent’s church for development. Right now, that means we are casting a wide-net to see what the possibilities are, including sale, lease, or a combination. This news does not come as a surprise to those who attended meetings we have held over the past three years. Also, many had attended meetings we held in the Fall and Winter, where we proposed merging St. Vincent de Paul & St. Monica-St. Augustine par-ishes. This process was completed in April 2020, as had been previ-ously announced at our Masses, posted online, published in our bulle-tins, posted in the churches, etc. The new parish is known as St. Monica. St. Monica’s parish on Old Colony Ave. now represents the legacies of three South Boston parishes: St. Vincent’s, St. Augustine’s & St. Monica’s. Additionally, some St. Vincent de Paul community members continue to worship at St. Peter Lithuanian parish on Flaherty Way. We cannot emphasize enough, that everything we try do is out of a commitment to serving the spiritual and temporal needs of South Boston current residents. At St. Monica’s our parishioners come to worship at both English and Spanish Masses. It is where neighbors pray for departed loved ones; where the hungry of Southie come to receive groceries from our well-stocked food pantry; where countless elderly of South Boston know as a place of community; and where so many people who grew up in and live in Southie identify as their spiritual home. All these good works do not happen in a vacuum. It costs money. St. Monica Parish is seeking to develop the St. Vincent de Paul church property because it has not been used as a house of worship since 2015 and is costing the parish about $6,000 per month to maintain and insure. Surely these resources could be put to better use to bene t the people of South Bos-ton. We need to develop St Vincent’s in order to continue the services which we provided for residents of South Boston. And because we of cially merged St. Vincent’s and St. Monica’s together, any pro ts received from the development of St. Vincent’s goes to St. Monica’s. This will help St. Monica’s to continue to be a relevant source of spiritual and physical healing and nourishment for generations to come. St. Monica’s church is making tough but necessary choices to consolidate re-sources and stay alive, vibrant and relevant for decades to come. As I have said before, this is about and for the people of Southie’s Lower End, and enabling the church to continue serving the spiritual and temporal needs of South Boston‘s residents. Please stay in touch with us. Better still, come and worship with us.

Our priests are often at the center of efforts that build

strong support systems for all of us. In addition to

their daily pastoral responsibilities, they help establish

social service organizations, offer spiritual support for first

responders, operate parish food pantries, and recently, in

response to the pandemic, put their lives at risk to provide

comfort and peace to those suffering with COVID-19.

Healthier priests build stronger communities. And the

Clergy Health and Retirement Trust (CHRT) is dedicated to

keeping our priests healthy.

This September, you can support the CHRT’s mission

by giving to the special collection at Masses on

September 19/20. Every gift makes a difference and is

a symbol of gratitude for all our priests who don’t just

observe need in our communities; they seek it out so

they can respond.
