Two Opposite Things

Our lives, our prayers and our faith are filled with paradox By Erin Ryan

I work part-time at an art gallery. Each month, we

put a new exhibit on display. One of my jobs as a gallery assistant is to welcome people to the opening receptions for each show.

At one of our recent openings, I found myself chat-ting with a pleasant and interesting man named Victor, who had dropped in with a friend. Art was the friend's "thing." Victor, a musician, was waiting around while the friend browsed.

In the course of the conversation Victor asked me, "So, are you an artist?"

"Well, yes, I make monotypes and collages," I said. "But primarily; I'm a writer."

"What do you write?" I told him that I write articles and profiles for the

"Faith and Values" section of the local paper, and I edit and write for a Christian magazine. He nodded approv-ingly.

“And," I smiled, "I also write science fiction." Victor furrowed his brow. "But those are two opposite things," Victor said.

"Faith is real, and science fiction is ... made up." When I'm talking with a stranger at church about

what I do, I'll often get reactions like Victor's: pleased that I write about faith, perplexed that I write sci-fi, a genre that often explains the universe without reference to God at all.

At the art league where I keep a studio, or at the various writers' meetings I attend regularly; I often get an opposite reaction: People brighten at the sci-fi part, but not so much the religion. In some people's experience, religion seems to restrict the acceptable ways people can search for transcendence, the artist's stock- in-trade.

But I don't really see a contradiction. I'm a voracious consumer of post-apocalyptic science fic-tion. I've read or watched just about every end-of- the-world scenario out there: hostile alien invasion, zombie plague, ice age - you name it, someone has written a novel, made a movie or green-lighted a TV series about it. My Netflix queue is filled with shows I missed a few years ago like CBS' "Jericho" (remnants of humanity re-group after nuclear destruction) and the BBC's Survi-vors" (immune remnants of humanity regroup after deadly pandemic).

this is what I told Victor), the preoccupations, hopes and fears of the people who wrote them are very real indeed. People have been saying the end is coming since time began. We fear that our lives at any moment could spiral into disaster - and we know that for so many people in the world, this has already happened.

On September 30 we celebrate the feast of Saint Jerome, that irascible desert monk who translated the Bi-ble into Latin. Jerome died in 420, still grieving for the end of the world as he knew it.

"The world goes to ruin. Yes!" Jerome wrote in 413, three years after Rome was sacked by the Visigoths. "The great city; the capital of the Roman Empire, has been de-voured by a great fire, and all over the earth Romans wander in exile. Churches which once were revered are now but dust and ashes. "

This month we also celebrate the feast of Saint Gregory the Great (Sept. 3). By the time Gregory was born, around 540, Rome had been sacked two more times - by the Vandals in 455 and the Ostrogoths in 546. The city was in ruins, the people on the brink of famine.

When Gregory became pope in 590, he quickly put his administrative talents to work and decreed that all farm-land owned by the church, over 1,000 miles of it, be used to produce food for the city's starving population.

We celebrate the feast of the Triumph of the Cross on September 14. We hear in the second reading from He-brews that Jesus, "though he was in the form of God ... emptied himself, taking the form of a slave ... he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and be-stowed on him the name that is above every name."

It doesn't make sense. How can the cross be a triumph? How can God be a slave? How can someone who is eter-nal die? How can someone who is dead be alive?

How can we keep going on in hope when the world ends again and again, somewhere on this globe, every day?

That's the paschal mystery. For many of us above the equator, September is the

time when we'll gather up one final harvest before the plants begin to die and the birds go silent. But we know the spring will come again.

For those of us who live near the Atlantic Ocean, Sep-tember is the peak of hurricane season. Year after year, communities and homes are ripped to shreds. But we know that after the storm we will rebuild.

And those of us who are Catholic will sing at Mass, "Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and res-urrection you have set us free," and we will share the bread and wine we have made by grinding and crushing the fruit of the earth.

Then we will lift high that paradoxical cross and carry it out into the dying, living world.

Bible Question of the Week:

In our Biblical Walk through the Mass, why are the Gifts bread and wine?

Last Week's Answer: In our Biblical Walk through the Mass, what is the Liturgy of the Eucharist? The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the second half of the Mass and has three principal parts: 1) the Preparation of the Gifts; 2) the Eucharistic Prayer; and 3) the Com-munion Rite. It is in this part of the Mass that 1) representatives from the community offer the gifts of bread and wine to the priest; 2) Jesus’ actions at the Last Supper, what He commanded the apostles to do in His memory and His sacri-fice on the cross are made present through the priest’s actions; and 3) we can receive the Body and Blood of Christ (the consecrated bread and wine) in holy communion. The Wednesday night Bible study is open to all.
